"I'm drunk" to "Work is irrlevant to my life"

I thought that was called a vacation. 2 weeks off after the 1st year.

tomWright 2008-02-03 04:58:34 PM
"Work is irrlevant to my life"

So is a spell checker, apparently.

Well work is relevant to this tax-payer who is keeping your lazy ass in Big Macs and Ripple, so get the fark off that lazy ass and get back to work.

Seriously, this is why I think you should have give up your right to vote when you go on the dole. Beggars should have no say in what we are forced to give them.

Doctor Funkenstein [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 05:06:02 PM
The picture with that article confuzzles me. It doesn't seem to fit, much like the shirt of that gangly biatch on the right.

Work is the bane of the drinking class.

Personally I don't care why they didn't show up. You don't show up, you don't get your check.

meekychuppet: What makes you think that they vote in the first place?

Exactly. They're the ones that don't vote on issues but then turn around and are some of the loudest ravers about how much they disagree with the outcomes.

I was in London last week. That is the only place I have met drunk 20 year old attractive women who were too annyoying to try to screw.

They could talk about nothing but themselves, nothing. Even the weather revolved around them.

Now I understand why they didn't talk about work.

You can't show up for a meeting when you're sitting on your ass all day, then you obviously are too busy to cash a check.

you get no argument from me. this isn't supposed to be a check so you can be lazy, its a check so you can stay on your feet while you find a new job.

Fark you.

This guy actually has his head on straight.

Someone who isn't trying to get a job (and is on welfare because of something OTHER than extreme disability or similar) should get kicked out. I have no problem with that. But saying "if you're on welfare at all you shouldn't be able to vote"? Fark you for trying to take away one of the most fundamental rights in our society.

While we're at it, let's take away YOUR right to vote because you benefit from the government. You got public schooling, you drive on public roads, and the police will come to your house if you call 911. Fark you for making me pay for that garbage. Let's take away YOUR right to vote, then.

I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said something along the lines of "A republic will last as long as the people don't realize they can vote themselves money from the public coffers."
Yeah, I know this is from the UK, but the same principle holds.

There ARE genuine unemployment problems in some parts of all countries. However, most of the Western world is awash in jobs. What they need to do is set up a system that helps people when they have a run of bad luck, but cuts them off benefits once they become lazy. For instance, withdraw welfare to anyone who refuses, say, two job offers that they are physically capable to do (as deemed by a doctor).

Beware the welfare where they give you work training and then no more benefits cause you are now super employable...Other than dirty immigrants have taken your trained for job at half the pay.

/And the government does not intervene when the immigrants get paid below minimum wages and no benefits.

Count me as one of those one in five. It had to be someone, statistically, on Fark. I know I'm not the only one, just the only one with enough courage to speak up and say so.

I will not bow down to some corporate slave-driving leech and subject myself to middle class working poverty. Asinine? Someone give me a hero tag!

So, take a sample of anecdotal stories, infer that most people on welfare are cheats from those, run with it as a crowd pleasing story.

Fark you for trying to take away one of the most fundamental rights in our society [voting].

Um, no. I don't know about Britian, but the US there are situations where you lose the right to vote (most notably, if you're in prison or are an ex-con). I'm not aware of any situation where freedom of speech is removed from certain people.

Freedom of speech, freedom of religion = Inalienable, fundamental rights
Right to vote = Alienable, not-quite-fundamental right

/"being on welfare without passable excuse for being on welfare = no vote" sounds ok to me

When I taught college I had a student who was on some program that paid him to be in college. 3 weeks in, he's only made one appearance. I check with his other teachers, he withdrew from their classes. Later in the week he came to me asking him to sign off on his form, I checked the box indicating that he'd not been there. Boy, he was *pissed*. He complained to the Dean of Students who actually told me to *sign* for form and be done with it. No.

Hey, you don't want to work for a corporation that's fine. But how about this: go find yourself a nice hut deep in the woods, where you can truly live in freedom rather than leeching off the work the rest of us do?

Ignorant McNugget 2008-02-03 08:39:26 PM
David Freud, an investment banker appointed to help reform the system, described the disability tests used to decide who gets some of the £12 billion paid out each year as "ludicrous".

That can't possibly be right.
The UK pays out the GDP of Costa Rica in disability benefits every year?
If a population is that disabled, maybe nature is trying to select it out of the gene pool altogether.

I think U S Americans just have to phone it in after they get on welfare. Could someone please confirm the following:

A citizen of Illinois would get their state welfare check, drive to Wisconsin, collect a second and then drive to Memphis for a third. Then, back through Missouri for number four. The only catch, they had to do it in a two day window. I used to live near I-55 and we would see these convoys of new GM cars passing through.

Always wondered...

They really should check if the same SSN is collecting benefits in another state, if so even applying should be a felony.

Hmm.. he must've known scrutinizing people's mail was taboo regardless if he opened it. What he could've done is dropped an anonymous tip at the welfare office. They may not have computer systems that look for abuses like that in some areas, and may never notice it unless by accident.

At least the guy was honest about being drunk. If I were the case worker, I wouldn't want some smelly ol' drunk sitting across the desk from me.

Perhaps case workers need a trap door like the one that Mr. Burns has in front of his desk . . .

You shouldn't be volunteering for d*ck if you can't even feed yourself.

I'm going to second the opinion that if you don't want to participate in any sort of corporate rat race, go live in the woods, off the land.

No able-bodied adult should be permanently relieved of the burden of providing for their own existence.

Hat Madder: The solution is pretty obvious. When it's your time for a review, come in to pick up your check.

That's basically how it works here in Australia.

You physically have to come into the dole office with your job search form (with the names, addresses, and contacts of the people you interviewed with in the past fortnight). If you don't show up, or you haven't fulfilled your obligations, payments automatically end.

The "showing up with valid proof of fulfilled obligations" thing is what keeps payments going. They don't keep going unless that is fulfilled every two weeks.
