Bush is known for giving "some of the most eloquent and visionary speeches ever delivered by an American President a three year old."

Fixed that...

To be fair, they are both mammals. And reportedly both owned hats. I think that about covers it.

Actually, hate to say anything remotely supportive of Bush, but the Gettysburg address was thought pretty much laughable at the time and was greeted with derision. (This is an easy google so do it your farking self)

While that may be true, I really doubt that anything Bush says will be considered historical, past lowering the bar for any future President.

Truly, he is the high point of the end curve of America.

Not only does he give eloquent and visionary speeches, he also gives great poetry, beautiful homes, and other coffee table books.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 05:10:48 PM
I don't even think Bush himself would dare to say that he gives eloquent speeches.

Yes, I fondly remember reading in school about the time that Abraham Lincoln nearly killed himself with a pretzel.

I caught part of this last night. Bret Baier strolled through the White House and walked the fences at Crawford with the Decider. He pelted the president with such hardball questions as "You identify with [Lincoln]?"

The problem with the Gettysburg Address comparison is that Abraham Lincoln was the one who penned the speech--not a team of speech writers who try to take abstract ideas and put them "in the president's words." And to try to conflate W's image with Lincoln is really despicable.

Fox doesn't even pretend to be anything more than a White House codpiece.

Yep, Ford's Theater.

Well....both presidents DID suspend Habeus Corpus. I don't think Lincoln waterboarded anyone tho.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 05:56:20 PM
There does seem to be this thing going on where Bush apologists, knowing that there's no way to save his Presidency at this point, are pulling out the "History will prove us right!" card.

Even if Iraq does stabilize into a working democracy, though, I can't really see historians giving him much of a pass. It's like if I'm shiatfaced drunk and drive home from the bar to find my house on fire, and I'm able to alert my sleeping family to get out in time. Yeah, it worked out...but it was still stupid.

rockyhors 2008-02-03 05:57:23 PM
I don't know what to say. I belong to a conservative newsgroup, (as one of the token liberal scum), and even his most ardent apologists there have never tried to defend his awkward stage presence. Nor have any of them tried to imply that he writes any of the speeches he barely slogs through.

RawData 2008-02-03 06:04:02 PM
Comparing him to a clinically tranquilized Britney Spears on a meth bender while doing her taxes would be more fair and balanced.

I'm waiting for Bush to start throwing people into jail for disagreeing with him. Lincoln did that on more than one occasion.

true, but A: i doubt they engaged in much torture. I could be wrong.
and B: like i said, he released them after a few months. Bad? Yes. As bad as Bush? No.

And to be fair, Lincoln WAS dealing with an armed rebellion on American soil. Extraordinary circumstances. Bush, 9/11 aside, isn't.

But Lincoln always had a handle on the seriousness of what he was doing. He was never doing it for power's sake only.

I guess Lincoln did have declared enemies hung and lined along the road into Washington DC though. That is justs a tad more hardcore than what Bush has done yet. Really Lincoln makes Bush seem like an amatuer in oppression too.

Failing_Junk [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 07:10:29 PM
I do not grant the premise, but if i had a team of speech writers and speaking coaches i could spew eloquent and visionary crap all over mindless pre-screened republican applause bots myself.

I think I get it ... Yeah, I can play too!

See, Lincoln won the civil war in America, and Bush created a civil war in Iraq!

Golly, they're like EXACTLY the same, Bubba. Now let's go cornhole us a drunk.

Yet there will be people who will emphatically parrot this line.
Nothing you will ever say will disprove it once they believe it.
This is the extent of political discourse in the US at this time
in the shallow end of the pool and the shallow end is damn wide.

Bush is like Lincoln. Both were married, both had more than one child, both have had their photographs taken, both breathe oxygen, both drink water. Pretty much covers it.

Damn. Lincoln was pretty badass. That's some Vlad the Impaler-type statesmanship.

Genuine question.

He actually did give some good speeches in the late 1990s but since then the speech center of his brain has been damaged by his alcoholism.

Drakkenmaw 2008-02-03 07:20:06 PM
For comparison purposes - a speech by George W. Bush:
The first half of it reads like he just won an Oscar. (new window)

And here is Lincoln's First Inaugural Address:
Not close to Gettysburg, like you might be expecting it to be. (new window)

Drakkenmaw 2008-02-03 07:21:55 PM
I'm not really making any point here - I just figured some primary sources might be worthwhile for comparative reading.

No wonder Dick Cheney always seems to be inside of Bush's head.

A gazillion brainless Fox viewers are going to watch that and think, "Huh. You learn something new everyday" and actually believe that shiat because they dont know any better.

VitruvianMonkey 2008-02-03 07:34:28 PM
So...ok, I dont get it. Is it that both Bush and Lincoln started economic wars that they justified as movements toward freedom? Is it that both believed white people to be intrinsically superior to black people (look it up) while paying lip service to the "darkies?" Maybe it's that both may have had serious mental illnesses during their tenure as president. Yep, I'm starting to see the comparison now.

wood_stones 2008-02-03 07:37:38 PM
and who says we have a media?

EwoksSuck 2008-02-03 07:38:04 PM
The hysterical thing, and I will bet you money on this, is that in a few years when he's out of office and the Republicans make their big push to take the White House and Congress back Fox news and the Ditto heads will be declaring Bush was really a liberal that snookered them into the war and deficit spending. But now they have some "real conservatives" who will solve everything with "tax cuts and increases in military spending".

Every time I see anything on Fox "News", I wonder what alternate universe the broadcast is coming from.

Ok, it's more like "...what the fark are they talking about? Are we on the same planet?"

Somewhere, an old Soviet-era propagandist is watching this and thinking "damn, that's slick."

You forgot: fight all the time, flip out and kill people.

Lincoln and Bush are sooooooooooo sweet that I want to crap my pants. I can't believe it sometimes, but I feel it inside my heart. These guys are totally awesome and that's a fact. Lincoln and Bush are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I can't wait to start yoga next year. I love Lincoln and Bush with all of my body (including my pee pee).
