Ruth's Chris: Most overpriced restaurant I'll never eat at again. And the name is stupid.

I feel like I have a speech impediment when I say the name. I prefer St. Elmo's here in Indy.

And wtf is a resturaunt?

No substitutions! You can only get the asbestos or the lead based paint. And for God's sake hurry up, I've got people waiting at table five.

Ruth Chris' is about as authentic as Sizzler.

Gimme The Palm, Maestros or Mortons for a decent goin'-out steak.

Otherwise, I'll visit my butcher and fire up my own grill... which is what I'm doin' today!

Well that's your problem. Anything over medium destroys a perfectly good hunk of cow flesh.

90 seconds per side over high heat is all I need.

Could someone (reasonably) explain to me the hate for Ruth's Chris? I've seen it a lot on other threads. I live in Michigan, where the next thing down is Outback, which has decent steaks, although not fantastic. The next thing down from that is nothing I'd dare eat. So is Ruth's Chris really bad? Are there better places? What makes it bad? The steaks taste good to me.

/We go there once a year for our anniversary
//But I'm willing to go somewhere better if someone can recommend a place?

Ruth and Chris can both suck House of Prime Rib's dick. Ironically, they are located in San Francisco.

fyi, CO is $15 extra per person

Yeah but if you have it with all the fluids dribbling around, it washes the ketchup off.

With an awkward name like that, CO poisoning should have been suspected long ago.

Just made myself a steak. Cheap cut of meat, dash of worst, one of those little plastic containers of poly-saturated garlic lard-sauce that come with domino's cheesy bread, and a dash of preacher Jim's hot sauce. Topped it with a splash of A-1. Was excellent. A+++ would eat again.

Ruth's Chris has all the trappings of a high-end steak place (El Gaucho here in Seattle) and none of the quality. It's a slap in the face when you realized how they've lied. Stick with Outback, I'll eat there, at least they're honest about being a reasonably inexpensive family restaurant.

All corn-fed beef sucks: it's mealy and bland without a lot of toppings to hide the meat. Organic, Grass-fed, grain-finished beef is firm, flavorful, and better for you. Find me a steakhouse that serves this beef, and I'll be a regular for life.

For just steak in Michigan? I would go to Morton's for other things: Wolfgang's new place in MGM is supposed to be good, the rattlesnake club, the restaurant on top of the ren cen (The Coach or something like that)

Hoban Washburne 2008-02-03 07:30:27 PM
Been said, but I'll reiterate. A decent piece of steak should be MR or M at the most. Otherwise, you're really just wasting money on a semi-edible hockey puck.

/just have the chicken, pansies

In 1965, while scanning the classified section of the local newspaper, Ruth noticed an ad for a steak house for sale - Chris Steak House on Broad Street in New Orleans. Against the advice of her lawyer and her banker, she mortgaged her house for $22,000 and bought the restaurant, eventually renaming it Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Medium-rare for my money. Still rare enough to leave a pinkish-red puddle on the plate.
I don't often get a cut of meat cooked rare, and even then mostly it is at a churrascaria.
