flumpth 2008-02-03 01:34:29 PM
wow. potentially scary...

/it's a series of anchors

Molavian 2008-02-03 01:40:33 PM
4 times in a week? That's a bit odd.

flumpth 2008-02-03 01:40:44 PM
joking aside, this really is worrying... my tinfoil is pretty loose but still...

Look, I'm not saying anything, but that's the last time I call tech support only to have them tell me to reset my modem.

/I did that already you farks!!

Serious question. How much do our military operations in the area rely on internet connectivity?

And it's purely coincidental that all these cable cuts have left Iran with zero internet connectivity.

JacksBlack: Serious question. How much do our military operations in the area rely on internet connectivity?

I'm fairly sure the military uses their own satellite network for important stuff.

Abzzstain: And it's purely coincidental that all these cable cuts have left Iran with zero internet connectivity.

That is apparently not the case. The location that is often pinged for traffic data in Iran is down. I don't claim to understand this, but that's what I've read.

Also, google Iranian sites, you can get to most or all of them.

maybe there are just lots of loose anchors in the region...?

ah ok, so it's just one location in Iran that's buggered?

So, should we be preparing to welcome our new cable-cutting anchor overlords or what?

This anchor can damage my cable any day.

We do. I used to work at the CENTAF NOSC in S. Carolina. We remotely monitored/maintained/troubleshot the networks for 27 locations in the middle east. It's all satellites.

Perhaps an unknown government is testing it's ability to interrupt the internet.

Two things come to mind:

1. US military and/or intelligence trying to cut Iran off from the outside world in prep for some kind of something.

2. Fanatical elements inside Iran trying to cut them off from the corrupting influence of the Internet.

I was going to go with #1, but then I saw the link above that said Israel is unaffected. So I'll add option #1a, which is that the US and/or Israel might be doing it.

Dusk-You-n-Me [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 02:32:44 PM
Oh and, kick, me, replies, these.

There's almost nothing that happens in that neck of the woods that the US doesn't know about or took part in.

Just sayin'

"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action." - Auric Goldfinger

While I don't have any hard data on the normal rates for cable failures, my instincts suggest four in a week seems a little high for chance. The question would be, who plans to do something that would make isolating that chunk of Asia's Internet from the rest of the planet and/or vice versa? President Dubya is an obvious suspect, but far from the only one; internal purges aren't out of the question.

I think Iran, or China is involved. Disrupting communications is a classic tactical maneuver.

T-Servo: /don't feed my paranoia

Apparently the last time a load of muslim/middle eastern websites were shut down was by the US a few days before 9/11.

US pulls the plug on muslim websites. Guardian 10th Sep 2001. (new window)

/relax, i'm just feeding the paranoia

Ships' anchors are the only natural predator for undersea cables.

Hey, oh, thanks, Capn- oh, I see what you did there.

You said something obvious about Captain Obvious, so people would say "Hey, oh, thanks, Capn- oh, I see what you did there".
