It's true, the early Beatles guitar solos were the suck.

Then along the way George Harrison became great. But early on, he was awful.

Also, Farkers who don't know who Cliff Richard is can't claim to be knowledgable about rock music.

That said, the last bit of the article puts him in perspective to the Beatles pretty clearly. I wouldn't call him the UK Elvis, more like the UK Ricky Nelson.

I wonder what he thinks about Jimmy Page's sloppy ass guitar playing?

Sorry to say this but Cliff Richard is really great.(or was)

You have to understand that Hank Marvin was the guitarist for Cliff Richard for many years. Marvin is the single most highly influential British guitarist ever. Steve Howe,David Gilmour and MANY others were inspired by Marvin.

Marvin's style may be somewhat tame by today's standards but he was VERY precise and his playing was articulate and perfect.

Check out "Apache" by Marvin.
Great classic sound.

Gerry and the Pacemakers was another truly great early English act who were later totally eclipsed by the Beatles.

Their stuff too was also in my opinion superior to the early Beatles. By the time "Rubber Soul" came out it was NO CONTEST though.

Oh god, I remember when this song came out and people were blasting it as the cheesiest hunk of mediocrity ever served to the music listening public. Take a piece of shiat and wrap it in something from the bible and the Christians will consume it like it was performed by Jesus himself with Peter playing the bass.

That Pixie guy ACTUALLY is a pretty good jazz guitarist.

I went to his website once.

He does a fairly ok version of "My favorite Things" on guitar.

Or, are you Cliff?

Do you like Cliff Richards? I've been a big Cliff fan ever since the release of his 1964 album, Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp. Before that, I really didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Aladdin where, uh, Cliff Richard's presence became more apparent. I think Every Face Tells a Story was his undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant vocal stylings of Cliff. You can practically hear every nuance of every vowel. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Don't Turn the Light Out. In this song, Cliff Richards addresses the problems of abusive political authority. My Kinda Life is the most moving pop song of the 1970's, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Cliff's lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your ass. Cliff Richards' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like It'll Be Me Babe and, uh, When Two World's Drift Apart. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Cliff Richards works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Gee WHiz It's You, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Maybe he's big in the UK, but here in the states this guy is rightfully the nothing he deserves to be.

They'll leave me out of the rock history books as well, and for the same reasons this guy will be omitted.

Yeah, he says he can't even remember a song which stood out that offended him.

"Later, in the interview with Q Magazine, he was quick to point out he had achieved things that The Beatles had not."

Like what?

WOTTA PATHETIC CRYBABY...AND HE COULDN'T EVEN NAME ONE SONG THAT WAS OFFENSIVE TO HIS VIRGIN EARS?

It's true, The Beatles are overrated, largely boring (although some of their songs don't suck), way overhyped, and have poor personal hygene.

Is this a repeat from 1967?
How the fark is this relevant??

oldandwiser 2008-02-03 05:25:02 PM
You can like or hate The Beatles, but "To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did and the most popular at what they did. Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, the Beatles grabbed a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the pack in terms of creativity but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience. Their supremacy as rock icons remains unchallenged to this day, decades after their breakup in 1970."

1) The Beatles will be remembered in 200 years, Cliff Richard not so much.

2) The Beatles as a group, or individually, don't really need us defending them from Cliff Richard.

Angel of Death 2008-02-03 09:51:13 PM
I have perfect pitch (so I'm really getting a kick...), and I worship the Beatles. They are seldom out of tune, and when they are, it's the occasional sour note in the vocals or from John's guitar, almost never from George's.

Cliff Richard can eat me.

You Wikilinked 'perfect pitch' for us?

Wow.......

wow.

craigdamage 2008-02-03 11:34:42 PM
I once knew this somewhat "challenged" guy who had perfect pitch.

He had no musical ability and could not play any instruments but he grew up with an older brother who was a music prodigy.

He had the "Rain Man" like ability to remember and recognize pitches. You could drop your car keys or tap on a beer bottle or whatever and he would proudly announce: "That was between C sharp and D!"

I think he liked the Beatles too.

Oroblanco 2008-02-03 11:58:53 PM
I hate how when you slam The Beatles people act like you've shiat all over the Shroud of Turin. It's especially bad with a lot of musicians. Tell them you're not a fan and it's like you're dead to them.

FunkOut [TotalFark] 2008-02-04 01:41:49 AM
Cliff Richards is a bland man who has been celibate for many years because he's an evangelical Christian who can't cope with the fact he's attracted to other boys. Or perhaps porpoises. Anyhow, he doesn't like women but he'd not allowed to admit that. So he just makes out that he dislikes sex.

And his music is good for soothing grandmothers to sleep.

Angel of Death 2008-02-04 02:05:23 AM
luckybastard: You Wikilinked 'perfect pitch' for us?

Not everyone knows what it is. I'm sorry to have insulted your enormous intelligence.

Oroblanco: I hate how when you slam The Beatles people act like you've shiat all over the Shroud of Turin.

Saying "the Beatles are bad" is like saying "the weather in San Diego is awful," or "I hate delicious food," or "murdering orphaned children is good." It's patently incorrect.

And of COURSE it's bad with musicians. They know music. Who would you expect to defend the Beatles? Helen Keller?

barneyfifesbullet 2008-02-04 02:24:15 AM
Cliff Richard means nothing outside of England.

The Beatles are, well, The Beatles. Always amused when some bash them, like that makes you the super cool outsider.

You and your White Stripes t-shirt go back to Pitchfork.
