OK, now this comment looks stupid, since it appears some admin changed the headline. The original headline left off the "Surviving members of" part.

...the San Francisco cult rock band that has played at political events since the 1960s...

Actually they were famously non-political, even anti-political. With a very few rare exceptions, they did not play political events and did not do political songs. I think even the show during the university shutdowns, they played on the condition that political speeches stop.

I remember losing a lot of respect for Garcia when I heard an interview in which he criticized anti-war activists. As I got older I better understood his position. He wasn't really against anti-war groups specifically, just against political aggregations in general. I think today's world shows that he was wrong.

Well they don't call themselves the Grateful Dead, just "The Dead".

I donno, I'm 20 years late to the party, based on the year I was born, and didn't discover the Dead till I was in my mid-20's, and the music still speaks powerfully as a rail against those who would crush free spirits.

So awesome on the guys, I hope by the Gods that it brings in a ton, and introduces the music to even more young people.

Well the times were different. When you look at the Bush cadre, a lot of 'em are still, to this day railing against the spirit that lead protesters, and we all know how George wrote against protesters in College (to which his professor at Yale called him out).

But a lot of the acts that they did did not endear them to anyone except themselves, especially the people they were trying to convince. If you want a modern analog, look at how some people react to MoveOn.org.

Sad day indeed.

When will people realize that Obama has no real campaign platform beyond a couple slogans?

There's no substance there aside from some socialist ideas on healthcare.

I love the Dead. High school educated musicians are not political experts.
