Everybody pray for a quick death?

Funny, the WHO only picks 3 flu strains that they think will be most prevalent. Looks like they dropped the ball on this one. This is one of the main reasons that I don't get a flu shot.

Smell the Glove [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 06:18:44 PM
My girlfriend has been hit twice by the flu this year. She got it over Thanksgiving and now she has it again. It's totally ruining my sex life. I feel so bad for her.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 06:35:55 PM
Great. First time I get a flu shot, and it's past the expiration date.

Psychotropic 2008-02-02 06:36:40 PM
Bring it on. My immune system needs a good workout.

wyltoknow [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 06:50:47 PM
Somehow I have gone through several doctor's visits and escorting a very fluish friend around without catching anything. Phew.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 07:37:51 PM
First guy I see in a jeans jacket and hanging out with a bunch of crows is gonna get shot.

Fraggler [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 09:43:17 PM
I'm one of the poor blokes who got hit hard by the flu. Still getting hit right now, actually - I was barfing ten minutes before writing this post. =(

/never too sick to fark

Noexit 2008-02-02 11:14:33 PM
Everybody at my office got two things this year: a flu shot, and the flu. So far I'm lucky and only got the shot. I take the shot, I had a really bad run of the flu once and don't want to do it again. I figure the shot is just one more bullet in my immune systems arsenal.

AirForceVet [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 11:16:34 PM
I was nearly hospitalized at 17 for flu-related complications. First I got the flu, then tonsilitis. The tonsilitis infection spread through my entire GI track because of my flu-weakened immune system.

/Have gotten my flu shot religiously since then.

I hate it when I have to read a page full of bullshiat, just to find the relevant info in the very last paragraph.

Am I the only one here who has never had a flu shot? I really don't get it... Do most people get them regularly (i.e. yearly)? Or is it just for older people and people with weakened immune systems to give them a little boost?

No, I don't get one. Mostly it's for older people with weakened immune systems and for people who work with/have small children. My immune system is decent so since I'm a needle-phobe anyway I don't see the point in getting one.

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 11:20:01 PM
bummer. that's just too bad. Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia obviously suck.

Foxxinnia 2008-02-02 11:21:07 PM
I've never gotten the flu before, so I won't worry my little head about this too much.

I dunno, I've always been able to rely on my body to beat everything out of my system in cold/flu season...

I stopped getting flu shots years ago & haven't had the flu since then. At most I get one cold in a year's time. I do know that in the past, every time I got a flu shot, I got the flu. Stopped getting flu shots...no more flu.

The Hypnotoad 2008-02-02 11:25:33 PM
This flu virus is bizarre. I spiked a 104 fever a week before Christmas, and it was gone in 24 hours. Easiest flu ever. Then, on Christmas day, I developed the usual upper respiratory problems. After that cleared up, I had temperature of about 99 and a deep barking dry cough that lasted a month. My doctor gave me an antibiotic for it when my co-workers couldn't take it anymore, and that seemed to work, except now the cough is no longer dry.

Oh how I long to be well.

Also, I once heard that there's no such thing as a "stomach flu" - that GI sickness is only ever bacteria-related. Thoughts? (Substantiated ones?)

Sunny [TotalFark] 2008-02-02 11:27:40 PM
I've never gotten a flu shot, and have only had the flu one time, which was 3 weeks ago. It was miserable, I hoped for death a few times. I'd FARK and slug Ny-Quil, and cry like a big ole titty-baby. I'm a terrible, whiny, needy sick person.

TxRabbit 2008-02-02 11:27:59 PM
I got the boogie fever..does that count?

Fugly_Chick 2008-02-02 11:30:27 PM
I am one of the unlucky few who can't get the flu shot. Made the terrible mistake of getting one a few years back not realizing that you shouldn't get one if you are allergic to eggs. Went around for several weeks looking like Popeye in one arm. It really sucks not being able to get one. I seem to pick up the flu at least every other year while everyone around me who has gotten their shot stays well :(

Ceph 2008-02-02 11:31:35 PM
Both my mom and little sister (10 y/o) are in and out of the hospital with the flu this year... they are both very small/skinny so losing even a few pounds is dramatic. I think my mom only weighs 93lbs or something.

litespeed74 2008-02-02 11:35:31 PM

I'm with you on this. I've never had a flu shot. Can't even remember last time I had the flu.

MadCat221 2008-02-02 11:36:24 PM
Perhaps if there were a means for the body, a system if you will, to fight off pathogenic microbes and eventually render the body immune to them... What would this miracle means be called if it existed?

larsoncc 2008-02-02 11:37:13 PM
The Hypnotoad - I think I have the same thing as you have. I've been sick since Nov 12 or so.

The stomach flu is not an influenza type flu. I could be bacterial or viral, depends on what you came into contact with.

If people would stop being so paranoid and antibacterial this...and loads of antibiotics, give the immune systems something to do, we'd be much better off.

My doctor gave me an antibiotic for it

WTF? if it *was* the flu, the antibiotic would not work on it.
I hate it when doctors overprescribe antibiotics... which is supposedly one of the leading causes of anti-biotic-resistant infections/diseases.

This?

My parents both got sick around same time.... both lasted for about two weeks. My Dad had a bad cold, my Mom had a sore throat/really bad cough. They both eventually went away. I was completely fine before, during and after their illnesses [*knock on wood*]. It seems like that's often the case. They get stuff that I don't get, and I get stuff that they don't end up catching.
Though, I rarely get sick [*knock on wood*]. Maybe a cold twice a year. That's it. Though I did get really sick for a week or two in 1995 around xmas, and then in the summer of 2001 or 2002 [i forget which]. I rarely get headaches too. Maybe like five or six times a year, max.
I've never gotten a flu shot. I'm in my early 20's, so i don't really see a reason to.

Limeade 2008-02-02 11:51:57 PM
I never had the flu and never had a flu shot til this past October. I only got one because I'm going to start clinicals for nursing school this month, and who knows what crud I could pick up in a hospital.

I wonder if all these people (except the hospitalized ones) really had the flu? Some people call things the flu that aren't really the flu.

Headcheese 2008-02-02 11:52:48 PM
Here in Tucson there's some mutant alien flu going around. If the Cloverfield monster and the Borg had a bastard flu offspring, this'd be it. A week-long debilitating fever with a jackhammer headache thrown in just to make it that much more fun.

DrumCorpsAlum 2008-02-02 11:53:53 PM
Yes, was supposed to see my girlfriend this weekend, who I haven't seen in a month. She lives in Michigan, I live in SC. Thanks flu.

I've never gotten a flu shot. But every time my hubby gets one (it's required cause he's military) he gets the flu, and I get the flu from him.

I've never had a flu shot. My wife almost begged me this year, but I still didn't get a flu shot.

come to think of it, I didn't get laid either... Hrmm... coincidence? In any case, I haven't gotten the flu since I was something like 13.

HUZZAH!

Get a Neti pot and flush your nasal cavity daily. It works.

The flu can kill you. It is NOT a cold. You don't ever want the flu. Just consider yourself fortunated that you have never had it.

The flu vaccine is a necessity not just for you. By taking it you potentially protect other people as well. Vaccines are only truly effective if they can be administered to a very large proportion of the population.

/the more you know

Sounds tempting, but that might require me to climb out of my plastic bubble I have been hiding in since flu season began. Come to think of it, I feel a little warm and my throat is starting to feel scratchy with all of this flu talk . . . ;)

/just kidding
//the flu does suck though

pubes 2008-02-03 12:13:34 AM
flu is just a mini thinning of the herd type thing, but if you don't die, it makes you stronger by making you more immune to viruses. nothing to see here move along people, and please make sure to pick up the dead untermenchens along the way and put them in the proper grave.

Eutamias21 [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 12:15:31 AM
Give me some good old influenza, and I stay strong. But I'd rather die than contract the stomach flu.

/Only exaggerating slightly.

Dictatorial_Flair: Be sure to wash your hands semi-frequently and avoid touching your face as much as possible. Really, it helps.

QFT. I never touch anywhere near my eyes, nose, or mouth once I've left the house without washing my hands (properly, not rinse and flick) first, and ESPECIALLY not at work.

Haven't had the flu for over twenty years, and haven't had a cold in over ten years. YA RLY.

/Will die from a massive cytokine storm in the next real epidemic

0Icky0 2008-02-03 12:25:02 AM
I'm a chimney sweep, I am, and I'm presently stuck in a flu. So I'd be getting a kick out of this if I could move me bleedin' legs.
