I personally favor an approach to getting health care to more people, such as those proposed by Senator Ron Wyden and former Senator, and presidential candidate, John Edwards.

I will co-sponsor and fight to pass the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act - legislation introduced by Sens. Barbara Boxer and Bernie Sanders.

One of those timeless truths is that if regular folks want to get a decent deal for wages and benefits when they're dealing with the rich and powerful, they need to band together and stand together. And that is what a union is all about.

Sorry, explain exactly how Sizemore's ballot initiatives have anything to do with the "voice of the people". The fraud involved in the gathering of signatures by the Sizemore folks is well documented. Sizemore puts the same measures up cycle after cycle to get Unions to fork out time and money they would just as well fork over to get democrats elected.

Nope. But thanks for trying.

You like that 40 hour work week? Thank the unions. You like sick days? Thank unions. You like paid vacation? Thank unions. You like overtime? Thank unions.

Unions are only as good as their rank and file, and if the rank and file allows the leadership to do dumb crap, that's the organization's fault.

The maxim that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance isn't just about praise God and pass the ammo. It means that you have to pay attention, and actually DO something other than whine when folks do things that are going to shackle you. Either with real chains, or economic, or social. When you see things going on, you take action. Not just hope it gets better.

Americans used to take responsibility for their actions. Sadly, we are in a culture today that often makes synonyms of "responsibility" and "blame."

Responsibility is a harder road. Blame is assigned. Blame is someone else telling you who did what to whom--and often without it being in direct correlation with actual fault. Responsibility is accepting a duty or charge. Responsibility is a mark of maturity, and lately, folks have been trying to shed responsibility as fast as they can.

Don't like the schools? Do something. They're your schools. Don't like your government? Do something. The government is by, of, and for the people. Not some nebulous sort of institution that has descended upon us. We have the government we deserve, and the leadership we deserve.

And by and large, most unions have the leadership they deserve, because they've forgotten what it means to actually have to fight for something. They'd rather just pay their dues, and forget that unions exist, and NEED the input of the rank and file, and if they're going to just pay the dues and not actually do much to be involved than show up for cheap coffee and lemon sessions, then they get a piss poor union.

And mind you Sonny Jim, I'm a farking Republican. Unions have been responsible for the rise of the middle class in this nation, and the strength of our economy has rested on their shoulders as well, by bolstering wages, that have stayed within the communities, that have spawned better conditions, safer conditions, and in turn helped the industries they've been involved in lead the way in productivity. All of the success of the American economy isn't entirely on their shoulders, but they've led the way for safer, better, and more fair conditions that we've come to expect, and, sadly, often take for granted.

The Internet is Yours.

Elephantman 2008-02-03 09:45:23 AM
Labor unions do the same thing that socialism does in that it classifies everyone by their function rather than recognizing individuals. Instead of being Owen, I would be classified as "geek." There are volumes written about the negative effects of enforcing a group identity, but in this context, the effect is to decrease efficiency in the workplace.

Let's look at an assembly line. As a unionized assembly line, each worker is paid the exact same wage as all of the other assembly line workers according to their seniority and function. It doesn't matter how hard an individual works or how well they do their job as long as the individual performs his or her job with a minimum level of competency. In a non-unionized workplace where people are compensated for their individual contributions, an individual is rewarded for finding a better way to complete their job. The result is that each worker is constantly improving and increasing the overall efficiency of the workplace.

The most damage from this group mentality may be suffered by the workers. It's really quite simple. When you think like a group and act like a group, then you will be treated like a group. That means that the employer looks at the average performance of the group to determine compensation and incentives rather than the individual. An individual can be exceptional at their job, but her excellence will merely have the effect of bringing up the average for the group. Since the employer and other people see the workers as a group, it dehumanizes the workers. It is easier to rail against a group than an individual (this column is proof). This group mentality is a common tool used by militaries to dehumanize the enemy and it has the same effect in labor disputes.

Labor unions' affinity for politics is also ruinous to America. When labor unions fail to gain what they want from an employer through the negotiation process, they increasingly turn to the political process to get their way. For instance, many union wages are based on the minimum wage. Let's say that a union plumber makes four times the minimum wage. Rather than negotiate the wage up to 4.5 times the minimum wage, a union will lobby to have the minimum wage increased. This process corrupts the political system by using government for purposes beyond its mandate.

Governments increasingly regulate (often beyond the bounds set by their respective constitutions) the minutest details of business - details that were once left to the business' discretion. It's gotten to the point that governments are deciding how big a cube should be and what kind of chair should be supplied. As governments become more and more involved in business, business fights back by lobbying government to set the rules to their advantage. In the end, the unions and management are fighting a proxy war on the floors of legislatures across America.

In the end, labor unions hurt the economy, the culture, and most of all, the workers they were formed to protect.

hubiestubert: Nope. But thanks for trying.

Unions had their place and were absolutely necessary at the time. Now they've been replaced by OSHA and various government regulations. There's no need for them any longer. The fact that your entire post touting their wondrous effect on America is written in the past tense only underscores my point. They no longer serve any real purpose.

They are a drain on business and are only looking to advance their own bottom line. The more union members they get to pay dues, the more $$ they rake in. Their only reason for being right now is for their own profit.

/For the record, I'm a Democrat
//And a former teacher who absolutely DESPISES the NEA.
///Now in sales, where my last employer Verizon Yellow Pages, actually had a union. Please explain to me why salespeople need a farking union?
