When the tip is on a credit card or debt card, the cabbie has to pay taxes on it.
If its cash he just pockets it and doesn't claim it.
Its the same for delivery people.
That doesn't excuse the cabbie.
Funny though, at 6' and 245ish pounds, people rarely are rude like that with me. Tough guy cabbie chooses who he roughs up.

I got up and told him I was calling my husband who is a professional boxer," she says. "I started dialing the phone and he said, 'I give you a punch in the mouth' and he turned around and he socked me in the mouth."

What is this woman 15? (Replace 'husband' with 'boyfriend')I bet she's the "don't you know who I am???" type...

The two times I have paid a NYC cabbie using a credit card, the driver has claimed that "it didn't go through" and insisted I pay in cash. Both times I paid, and both times of course it went through and I had to cancel it on the credit card.

And waiters.

I know people who always tip in cash regardless of how they're paying, so that if the wait staff wants to not claim the tip on their taxes, they don't have to.

Heh, tax avoiding assholes. Not only do they avoid the tax but it's an extra charge for the customer who would normally be able to write-off or be reimbursed for the expense.

If her husband really is a boxer, then a shot to the chops really shouldn't faze her all that much.

Probably how he says 'good morning'. *punch* 'When's breakfast?'

Having worked for tips, I always tip in cash as a convenience for the tippee. That said, NYC cab drivers are largely a bunch of smelly foreign scum now. I prefer riding with an American-looking driver and rarely am so late that I can't pick and choose my cabbie. I've never had a problem in a cab with this system. Flame away. I could care less.

That's what I do. But then, I used to wait tables, and I too preferred cash tips.

I always try to be polite to the wait staff as well. Never fark with the people who handle your food.

I don't carry cash for reasons like this. If I'm mugged, you're just not going to get much. I don't farking care if you cry and whine because of my perfectly acceptable method of payment. Get belligerent with me like in the article, cabby, and you'll have to farking catch me. Have fun!

Or a cockpunch and he's gotta take on the next fare with his balls lodged in his throat.

Cabs need a traceable GPS system too to track their rides and fares. It would also prevent the scenic route thing as well. If the credit card machine doesn't work then the ride is free, easy solution for the taxi commission to work out.

that would take care of this.

because their profession allows (or used to allow) the freedom to be unsupervised, SOME cabbies, and SOME bus drivers are/were-able-to-be scumbags. (but most drivers I've dealt with have been really cool though, bus and cab).

Fark that. I have to pay taxes on all my income, they can pay up on theirs. I tip with the method of payment I use. If I pay cash, I'll tip in cash. If I pay with a card, the tip goes on there.

echollin 2008-02-02 09:44:57 PM
It may partially have something to do with taxes, but I think that it has more to do with the fact that they don't to pay the credit card processing fees.

This already works with cell towers and triangulation with MSOs. If they don't want some "chip" in the car tracking the GPS, it's already in their cell phones. You can thank e911 regulations for that, in part.

oicabi 2008-02-02 10:19:04 PM
As a cabbie permit me to make the following observations:
1. If the events described in TFA are true, then the sooner this scumbag driver is off the streets the better.
However, ...
2. At the end of a trip, Cash tendered for the fare never comes back "DECLINED!"
3. Cash payments don't suffer a 5% credit card processing fee penalty when used to pay the lease for the shift.
4. Cash payments are quick for the cabbie to handle. It is quite stressful for both the cabbie and the "Look I'm in a hurry! What's taking so long ?"(implied you incompetent coont driver)" customer, at the airport or anywhere when there is poor reception for the cab's data antennae.
5. You can't make change for the next fare, pay for gas, pay tolls, etc. etc., using a previous customer's credit card slip approved for payment to the cab company.

Last summer the cab drivers in NY staged a strike over the credit card machines / GPS systems being mandated in all cabs. They failed but have not given up, I have had similar problems where cab drivers insist the credit card machine is broken and will not allow it to be used. SO annoying.

Volleyballer 2008-02-02 11:33:35 PM
If the cabbie pulls any crap like "The credit card machine is broken." or "It didn't go through." and you think he is lying, why not call either call the cops and wait, or skip out on it and let him call the cops. Seriously? Do you people always just roll over and do whatever some jerk tells you to?

Say, "Listen, you can take my credit card payment, and like it, or I'm leaving. Your choice." You have the funds, you are in control of the situation.

ChrisPC 2008-02-02 11:36:43 PM
This isn't as bad as what happened in Nashville last year. A passenger got into an argument over Islam with a Somali cabdriver who proceeded to drive over him as he walked away. Fortunately, he only suffered a broken leg, and the cabbie is now in prison.

dwalder 2008-02-02 11:49:50 PM
WHY do people try to pay with credit cards? It shouldn't be treated as a valid payment, given the delay it causes, and the number of stolen credit cards is higher than the counterfeit bills estimated to be in circulation at any given time. I know bank cards can be faster, but still, WTF? Cash is still king for the street.

Is it about lowering the risk of a cabbie getting mugged? UNLIKELY tag would like a word.

Y'now, I'm planning on an NYC visit and if I come across that shiat I'll reach over and run my card FOR them. Fark your union. Take the payment and the tip anyway (I always tip, I know these guys have to deal) I can give it to you, or you can try and catch me. You decide. I always give good tips, but don't tell me how I can, let alone smack me. Don't act stupid when the money is exchanged.

I know why people do this, and I'm not going to stand in the way of making money, but punch me in the face and capitalism goes right out the window.

Kozmopoliskepticalopsis 2008-02-02 11:54:05 PM
I HATE taking taxis in NYC for this very reason. When I travel, I travel on an expense account and need a receipt for everything. If I pay cash, the driver usually gives me a printed receipt that doesn't include the tip. If I pay with a card, the tip is right there in black and white and I get reimbursed 100%.
I have gotten a lot of guff from drivers about my insistence on paying with a credit card, but 99.9% of that guff has been from NYC cabbies. Oh, and they do smell.

Traveler tip # 1829465:
If you are in Las Vegas, ALWAYS pay cash and ask for a receipt. They with give you a blank receipt and you can fill in any amount you want. Boss: "$62 to go from The Excalibur to the MGM Grand?!!" Me: "Yep. That's what it says on the receipt. I thought that was weird too."

Nyteflame 2008-02-03 01:29:04 AM
Im sorry, while I understand that it is a pain to have to claim your tips on taxes, that does not excuse this guy in anyway. If I have to pay taxes on my income, then so should you, even if you are in a tipped profession.

Ral 2008-02-03 01:40:53 AM
fanbladesaresharp: I don't carry cash for reasons like this. If I'm mugged, you're just not going to get much.

There's something to be said for carrying enough cash that your mugger will be satisfied and leave instead of killing you when he gets pissed off.

gothelder 2008-02-03 02:50:33 AM
Had I been in the same situation, then I would have been paying cash, but with *NO* tip. And then I would have been extra sure to point out that if I was paying by CC# for my convenience I would have rounded up to the next 10 bucks...........

ssrat 2008-02-03 02:54:25 AM
Cash should always be the way you pay for a cab fare ESPECIALLY if it is under $10 like this one was, Not sure about NY Taxis but there are places where anything under $10/$15 and the business gets charged EXTRA for the processing fee.

Not to say she deserved it (maybe after she opened her mouth and said MY boyfriend is a BOXER, "lady BOX THIS")

If you are only going a few blocks carry cash, it is a heck of a lot easier to deal with

ninad 2008-02-03 04:04:25 AM
My car got towed so I had to take a cab to the pound. I was in a bad mood, and the stupid cabby tried to converse with me. Cabby suggested it was my fault the car got towed. I suggested he stfu.

When it came time to pay him. I had cash, but didn't want to use it. The stupid cabby tried to tell me his credit card machine wasn't working, by which time I had already swiped my card entered a $0 tip.

That was the one and only time in my life I didn't leave a tip in a situation where it's usually left. I don't get left a tip when I do a good job at work. Why should a cabby get one if he's a punk?

The SOB. I wish he had tried punching me. Given the mood I was in, I would have beat the crap out of him, or at least tried.

/ NYC Traffic Police are douches too.
