As a bilingual Canadian who lapses into Franglais sometimes out of laziness, all I have to say here is, "Qu'est-ce que fark?"

J'ai toujours pensé que la terme "franglais" est beaucoup plus vieux que ça. Fark: educationnel et amusant aussi!

My advice for English friends that move to Quebec is "if you don't know a French word, use the English word with a French accent, and you've got about a 50/50 shot."

Here in Quebec (at least in major urban centres [all three of them]) Franglais is pretty much what everyone speaks -- my French co-workers generally say things like "Ce week-end je vais assister au un spectacle du rock and roll pis mange des burgers après avec mon friend Jean."

Come Winnipeg if you want to hear franglais. The French section of town, St. Bonniface, has been speaking it long before he coined the name for it. People switch back and forth between French and English probably about 5 times a sentence. In fact they'll say one sentence in French then the next in English then the next in French.... it's kinda hard to follow. :P

Makes me crazy when I listen to the Vancouver French language station. Not just do they switch back-and-forth but I don't even get a quaint French accent for "Fraser River" -- it is done in perfect English. Well perfect Canadian anyway.
