Welcome to the NRO. That's like the fourth article today bashing Obama on no merits whatsoever. He must be doing something right.

It isn't.

Absolutely. I have no idea who I'd vote for, but I won't vote for him because he's black, or for Clinton because she's female, or for McCain because he's a veteran, or whatever... Why? Because I'm not a complete moron.

it's because the neocons want romney to run against hillary. they're shiatting themselves that mccain is leading the gop nomination and that obama is leading the dems. they're worried that if either makes it into the white house, all the buried bodies will be exhumed.

Watching the beads of terror sweat form on the foreheads of the far right as they think about President Obama is great.

I can't in good conscience bring myself to vote for McCain after he cozied up to the religious extremists in the Republican Party, or after he supported the war. But man, I would loooove to see Obama vs. McCain in the general.

NRO, Fox News, WND, Limbaugh, et. al. is hoping and praying that Hillary get the Democratic nomination. The Conservative Movement is currently on the ropes after their dream of a Republican run Washington DC rotted before their eyes into a nightmare.

They need a bogey man to scare people back into the movement... and Hillary is a more palatable bogey man than Barack Obama, precisely because he is black. It is perfectly acceptable to denigrate a woman as a figure head of the feminists, and attach to her outrageous strawmen in order to rally people.

It is not as palatable to denigrate a black man who does not put himself forward as an aggressive black power advocate. Doing so drives away new conservatives who want to bury the corpse of Strom Thurman and forget about him and his Dixiecrat past. Even the Southern Strategy of the 80's is criticized quietly in conservative circles as the reason why they are still unable to make head way into that voting block.

So yeah, take these facts about Obama's electability with a grain of salt... because there is an ulterior motive behind it.

BuckTurgidson 2008-02-01 12:39:56 PM
Anyway, this is only a mild taste of the preposterous hyperbole we can expect to see from the self-parody that was once William F. Buckley's respected and revolutionary National Review.

Prepare to be gobsmacked by what issues from their mills for the next year. It will all be relentlessly submitted and resubmitted here on Fark.

I'm not so sure about that, but far be it for me to understand their thinking. I think Hillary the person is bigger bogeyman that Barack's race is, but that's just IMHO.

The problem with creating a bogey man is that you have to do it in a way that is easily repeatable, and that draws upon common knowledges and prejudices of the listener.

With Hillary this will sound sexist... but criticisms of sexism are easily explained away "Feminist Gobblety Gook" to their listeners.

With Obama nearly everything will have to draw obliquely on racist stereotypes... not an easily explained tactic.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Barack Obama's South Carolina Victory Speech included this part (starts at 14:30 into the video):
I know that when people say we can't overcome all the big money and influence in Washington, I think of that elderly woman who sent me a contribution the other day, an envelope that had a money order for $3.01 along with a verse of scripture tucked inside the envelope. So don't tell us change isn't possible -- that woman knows that change is possible

$3.10 is a suggestion of the bible verse: "To everything there is a season".

I have co-opted the tale to get small to moderate value donations in my matching donations
campaign (see my profile for details).

There's no change in sending $301. Only round numbers. The absence of change.

That's what I mean.

The stupid black people just vote for him because he looks like them but they'll be the first to be forced to bow to alluh. Then they'll come and take your daughters and make them live in harems where they will make her pregnant and then make her have an abortion while they read mohammed quotes at her. BEWARE

While I do think people like Barack for many varied reasons, including his brains, oratory, smile etc, I won't reject the notion that a tiny part of it somewhere is a "Good for you. You go black guy" kinda sentiment wanting to see him succeed.

If Barack becomes President, he may inspire just as much "maybe one day I could become president" in blacks as he will "wtf are you complaining about, a black man was PRESIDENT, surely things aren't that bad" in others.

Not that it matters. The world's ending in 2012 anyway

Hang On Voltaire [TotalFark] 2008-02-01 04:17:39 PM
I think for some people it is about race but certainly not all. Pundits have this need to put everything into a box. Hillary won because she cried, Obama is winning because of white guilt. Blah blah
