Plastics were one of the inspirations for the band I play in now. We even perform a cover of their song Diamond Head. In fact if somebody in the band screws something up we usually point at them and yell "I call your name, Mister Diamond Head!"

I saw this as a kid, and was slightly freaked out by it. 20 years later, I would put it on my MP3 player along with the other tracks.

They re-did this album(IIRC), but doesn't sound nowhere near as good.

I'm channeling Devo and the Talking Heads...
Anyone else?

With a little B-52's thrown in.

The part that cracks me up every time I see it is when they're dressed in the rubber Santa outfits, dancing on the giant dice. If ever there was a perfect image of WTF that would be it.

Singer sounds almost like Borat.

Exactly what is so crazy and indescribable about this?

Reminds me of a pretty typical 80's new wave band video.... sure, the penguin was kind of random, but seriously... go back and get some footage of 80's MTV... this wasn't really all that weird.

I'm going to be in Japan (Tokyo) for the first time in my life, in just seven weeks. I wish I could have seen it in the 80s, when the economy was booming and the young Japanese wanted to be just like the Americans. That must've been a crazy place back then.

What am I saying, I'm sure it's going to be just as crazy, if a little sad.

Anyone catch the part where the keyboardist played a bit from the final temple in Zelda 2?

Awesome. I love this shiz.

Reminds me of Oui Oui, only without the benefit of Michel Gondry at the directing helm.

/nor the benefit of being not in English

If you want to hear some crazy Japanese punk band shiat, check out this CD called Dive Into Disney. Imagine Japanese punk garage bands covering Disney tunes. Wierdness isn't even the word to describe it...

I saw the Plastics in 1980, they opened for the B-52's at Harpo's in Detroit. They were great live... the perfect opening band for the B's...

Maybe not, but then 80s videos made a point of being strange - the thinking seemed to be, if you weren't giving the viewer a prolonged WTF experience, you were doing something wrong.

Fish Heads, anyone? (new window)

Heh, he was Hunter S at the end.

Kinda catchy too

JPOP is wack

I'm not sure the video director was actually Japanese. Look at the dice. The one pip is black.

That isn't how Japanese people do dice. The one pip is always red. The others are black.

It's a FAAAAAKE! Or directed by someone who isn't Japanese, anyway.
