What the hell? Nothing has changed then really

will have to show proof of citizenship - a passport, trusted traveler card or a birth certificate and government-issued ID such as a driver's license.

I thought it was supposed to be you had to have a passport as of Jan 1 2008. I was asked for my birth cert and a government ID earlier last year when I crossed.

SoothinglyDeranged: you had to have a passport as of Jan 1 2008

If flying: passport since Jan 23rd, 2007

If land or sea: two pieces ID, one being photo-ID as of Jan 31st, 2008

Prior to then, if by land, no ID required. (Verbal declaration was sufficient, but they normally insisted on one piece of photo ID)

At least they ate the dinner set out before burning it down.

To be fair, they did burn down the Upper Canada Parliament buildings first in York.

... of course they did that because the powder magazine at Fort York was blown up killing General Pike (of Pike's Peak fame)who was much loved by his men.

Well aware of the flying part. As for the land and sea, the border guards tell a rather different tune. Canadian and American.

SoothinglyDeranged: the border guards tell a rather different tune

Technically, they (Canadian guards) have authority to allow or deny entirely on their own judgement. (Not sure if the US ones do).

Until recently, people in border towns known to the border guards would use "verbal oaths" to pass. ie. "Hey Frank, going into town to get some stuff" "Sure Bob, have a nice day."

Of course, if they don't personally know you, they can ask for anything. What are they going to do if you challenge them? You ain't crossing.

Honestly? Much better idea than the "high-tech security card" they wanted. I always have photo ID and my birth certificate on me. I have photo ID so I can drink, and my birth certificate so I can prove to the farking Canadian government that I am me. Without that, it's almost impossible for them to process paperwork.

Rodeodoc 2008-01-31 04:10:09 PM
FTA: ``If we have no questions, we just issue them that piece of paper and then they're allowed to proceed into the U.S.,' he said.

That's some tight security there, Lou.

peck: Technically, they (Canadian guards) have authority to allow or deny entirely on their own judgement. (Not sure if the US ones do).

The US guards are all powerful and can interpret the regulations however they bloody well feel like. I've been involved with cross border transportation for the past couple of years, and have had lots of arguments with high level people about their stupid policy of allowing this. When I complained about some idiots at border crossings that were requiring things that were contrary to regulations, a senior CBP official told me "Ya know, I just got a bunch of guys that are waiting our their retirement, and they really don't want to learn anything new."

As part of so-called Homeland Protection, CBP and TSA and the Keystone Cops of security.

Shortly after the murders, Despres packed up a car with the murder weapons and drove toward the United States. The car was later found in a gravel pit near the Canada-U.S. border and identified as Fulton's. On April 25, 2005, one day before the bodies were discovered, Despres arrived at the Calais, Maine, border crossing. He presented himself to the U.S. border guards while possessing a chain saw, sword, knife and a hatchet. At the border, Despres boasted of being an assassin for the United States government and of having killed 700. Although the weapons were confiscated and Despres fingerprinted, Despres held a U.S. citizenship and was nonetheless permitted to enter United States.

I call bullshiat on this. I visited Michigan in October of 2007 and we had to give our driver's license and birth certificate to get through. Both ways.

Maybe the actual rule goes into effect now, but they've been enforcing it for some time now.

FTA: People entering the country will no longer be allowed to simply declare to immigration officers at border crossings that they are citizens.

Was this a widely accepted practice, other than folks in small border towns that were known to border guards? I criss-crossed the Ambassador Bridge by car a number of times in the early-to-mid 1990s and was asked for ID every single time.

This is news? I went to Toronto in 2004 and they asked for my birth certificate and license when I re-entered the US on the Blue Water Bridge.

/The only screening the Canadians did was ask if we had any drugs/weapons in the bus.

*shrug* there are still places that you can cross the border without even seeing a border guard.
