Hah, what about Dennis Kucinich and Ted Kennedy?

Cyberluddite [TotalFark] 2008-01-31 02:50:39 PM
The insurgent presidential candidate shifted further to the left last year in the run-up to the primaries

OMFG, he really must be a Muslim! Not only that, he's one of those damn insurgent Muslims!!

Juansmith 2008-01-31 02:59:46 PM
I'm sure he's among the most liberal, but there's no way his placement in such a list will be remotely objective at this point in the race...

SSP: Hah, what about Dennis Kucinich and Ted Kennedy?

Kucinich is a Representative. He might not be the most liberal in the House, though.

Cordwainer Deathbird 2008-01-31 03:01:32 PM
I always find this hysterical, because the real radical left views Obama as far too conservative.

coma 2008-01-31 03:07:12 PM
It sure is lucky that the "most liberal" senator always happens to end up being the Democrats' nominee for president. I mean, just think of how many links this article will get from emails and other Republican commentators. If I was a cynical man I might suggest an economic bias to naming him but with a name like "National Journal" they have to be straight shootin' fellas, right?

Jaboobinator [TotalFark] 2008-01-31 03:09:57 PM
This is ridiculous. Edwards and Hillary are both to the left of Obama.

In terms of Senators, there are many to the left of Obama.

Nonetheless, we are going to have to listen to a bunch of crap about how "liberal" he is. As if that's even a bad thing.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are falling over each other to prove that they are the most "conservative" choice. As far as I'm concerned, "conservative" is the dirty word.

Solid State Vittles 2008-01-31 03:14:12 PM
Snarfangel: Kucinich is a Representative. He might not be the most liberal in the House, though.

I highly doubt he's the most liberal in the House. Probably not by a long shot. Barbara Lee of Oakland for one has to be ranked higher than Kucinich.

FTA:

During the 2004 presidential campaign, for instance, Republicans attacked Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as an extreme liberal, including by pointing to his ranking as the most liberal senator in NJ's 2003 vote ratings.

Oh goody. That farking sucks. Fortunately I think Obama can defend himself better than Kerry. Won't matter for some people.

Exactly. Such a stupid thing to be dragged through the coals over. It's what candidates actually voted for or against that matters. Like I said, the L-word for some morons will be enough for them to vote against him, though, actually research and cognitive thinking be damned.

He will if he's in the position, and hopefully he will win the nomination. He'll fight back, for one.

It's so great National Journal can always count for Fark to greenlit their bullshiat about Democratic nominees just happening to be the most liberal liberal in the history of history.

I think you have National Journal mixed up with William F. Buckley's National Review.

National Journal runs a whole bunch of specialty publications for the serious players in DC, and they play it pretty much straight (because somebody has to). That daily Hotline thing they run is something like two grand a year.

I think I see how this works:

Convention hands nomination to Obama... Obama is most liberal Senator

Convention hands nomination to Clinton... Clinton is most liberal Senator

Convention hands nomination to ham sandwich... hand sandwich is most liberal sandwich

Great big piles of THIS. Help yourself to one of our free complimentary internets.

I hope the new candidate "takes back" the word liberal in much the same way black people "took back" that special word the filter likes. With no one willing to admit that they're (gasp) liberal, no wonder it's still the smear word the conservatives have made it into.

What's the dictionary say? Let's see...
• broad: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant ...
• having political or social views favoring reform and progress
• tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition
• a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties
• big: given or giving freely; "was a big tipper"; "the bounteous goodness of God"; "bountiful compliments"; "a freehanded host"; "a handsome allowance"; "Saturday's child is loving and giving"; "a liberal backer of the arts"; "a munificent gift"; "her fond and openhanded grandfather"
• a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets
• free: not literal; "a loose interpretation of what she had been told"; "a free translation of the poem"

Hmmmmm... exactly what in there am I supposed to be ashamed of if I self-identify as a liberal? Anyone?

Bueller?

btw, "most liberal" not nearly as scary as "most conservative," a title which GOP contenders actively seek...

IMHO, of course

No, it's just been reduced to a term lacking any sense of objectivity thanks to decades of misuse and abuse.

It's a pretty different time, too. I suspect a lot more people, will be able to see through the bullshiat of Republicans yelling "LIBERAL!!" and expecting everyone to line up against him. It's hard to hold on to a bit of credibility when the people doing the accusing have farked things up so royally.

You could also say you never hear conservatives say that very same thing. In fact, for a good while now, you hear conservatives say "I don't agree with what you have to say, therefore you are unpatriotic and unAmerican."

That's because this nation's citizenry has been subjected to "The Big Switcheroo".

It's not enough to disagree with your opposition anymore, now you have to HATE them.

It's not enough to think "I'm right and they're wrong because I know better than they do" anymore, now you have to think "I'm right and they KNOW I'm right but they're just being wrong to SPITE me".

It's not enough to think "Everything about the opposition is wrong" anymore, now you have to think "Everything that is wrong is the opposition".

It's real.
It's depressing.
And it's doing more damage to America than any amount of hijacked airliners ever could.

I heard on a news program that Obama missed a lot of votes because of campaigning, many of them on controversial issues. (This was a charge he was hit with when he was in the Illinois senate also.)

I only skimmed the article but there are a lot of votes that we don't have his opinions on.
