He has such a lovely barritone. You can really tell that he's classically trained.

Yeah, now I remember.

Really? This is modern metal at it's best? They couldn't even get the head banging right.

Aarontology: This is modern metal at it's best?

Not by a long shot, subby is quite clearly delusional.

/It ain't terrible
//But c'mon

Hmm....I'll listen later.

Ya know, I like a lot of the new metal til cookie monster starts singing. There are very few people who can pull that singing style off. Whoever this guy singing is, is not one of them... The rest of the band I like.

I perscribe to the old style, high lonesome, wailing class of Metal singing, such as Iron Maiden.

/I remember it well, fer I had an onion tied to m' belt, as was the style in them days...

DontBeSoDigital 2008-01-30 05:22:43 PM
Pfft. I'll take Mastodon, please.

Meshuggah: awesome.

Cool, but these guys peaked with "Destroy, Erase, Improve"...

Kodiak Attack 2008-01-30 05:37:55 PM
I wouldn't call Meshuggah "new-school" metal - they've been doing their music this way since '94 or so, just tightening up their highly-syncopated base and trying different things with each progressive album.

That song's off their first album with the eight-string guitars, and they were experimenting more with isorhythms and just how "heavy" they could be.

Mastodon? Give me the bands they were inspired by anyday over their watered-down interpretations.

/new Meshuggah album in March (obZen) will be miiiiiiiiine

Verfall 2008-01-30 05:43:51 PM
Fark U: I hate bands with those types of vocalist. Seriously, is this cool now?

/fail, imo.

Been cool for about a decade now.

Different strokes, different folks, yadda yadda yadda.

/Opeth is better.

nicoffeine 2008-01-30 05:45:00 PM
I had hope until 1:10

Dude, they have this thing called "singing." You should look into it.

kruppz 2008-01-30 05:56:36 PM
Meshuggah is rythmically awesome...when you can follow them.
Great Holdsworth style solos too.
I dont listen to them for the vocals, thats for sure.

I'm going all in with:

New metal for us geezers who can't stand all that damn cookie monster singing.

Enomai 2008-01-30 06:23:10 PM
I get that people don't like the growling/screaming and am OK with it. With that in mind, what exactly would you "sing" over this that would fit? I have everything from Parliament to Emperor in my CD/cassette collection and I feel that for what Meshuggah and the like are doing, screaming is what works. That's pretty much true for any instrument though. I wouldn't throw a Satriani solo in a Weezer tune, EVH's major scale rock wouldn't work with MBV, and Bruce Dickinson or Tori Amos can't front a death metal band.

Lumber Jack Off 2008-01-30 06:24:12 PM
meshuggah are good, but give me a break! there are much, much, much better metal bands out there today that shiat all over this.

/subby, you retard.

berklee 2008-01-30 06:42:37 PM
Bass tone - brutal
Cookie Monster singing - no thanks

If screaming is singing, I've got a great crazy 80-year-old italian grandmother down the road to front your metal band.

mahavishnunj 2008-01-30 06:52:15 PM
new school? this bands been around forever. i was going to post the morgan agren link but i was beat. anyone who wants to see the best metal drumming ever should watch that. i like meshuggah alright but ive never understood everyone comparing the solos to holdsworth. he just does extremely lame tapped solos that the white guy in dragonforce could probably play.

Kodiak Attack 2008-01-30 06:53:38 PM

/is it weird that I also have Parliament and Emperor in my CD collection?

oh yeah-
berklee: Bass tone - brutal

i dont know dick about meshuggah but i thought they didnt have a bass player, do they use one now or is this song old or what? i thought it was cool they didnt have a bass player since the bass player in most metal bands is completely useless.

More eye-bleeding than ear-bleeding. Someone take whoever made that video cut out back and shoot them.

BO-RING! And not even new-school. Or old-school, for that matter. By the way, whatever happened to swedishmetal.net? Did it, like, implode? Or am I just not internetting right?

/sad she missed Enslaved a few months ago.

Endzone108 2008-01-30 07:17:41 PM
I enjoy Cookie Monster vocals as much as the next guy but Meshuggah does not do it for me. My favorite has to be Burton C. Bell's vox off of one of the earlier Fear Factory albums, Soul of a New Machine. Totally different from what they put out years later that got a lot more play.

My co-worker is a Meshuggah fan, and it's interesting to see what pandora.com comes up with as related. We've heard a few songs by some ground called Anal coont (I'm sure at least part of that name will be filtered.)

about twenty seconds in, my heart started beating double time, and my eyes began to twitch. was that the intention of the video edits, or am i just a puss?

I love this band... Strange off kilter time signatures, heavy...

thats the stuff.

Wait until you watch that Motörhead video I posted. Yes, it was deliberate.

I don't listen to that much metal, but I've really been enjoying Isis, who I recently discovered (yeah, they've been around for ten years, whatever). I think the term "post-metal" describes them pretty well, I like post-rock (Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky) so this is pretty awesome because they have similar song structures with a heavy metal sound. Warning, some screaming/cookie monster vocals, but mostly instrumental:

Isis - Grinning Mouths

Sounded like a handful of head bolts, six feet of raccoon intestine, and a beer bottle tossed into a commercial garbage disposal.

Enomai: I get that people don't like the growling/screaming and am OK with it. With that in mind, what exactly would you "sing" over this that would fit?

1) Sing in a similar style, but better.
2) Sing in a totally different style.
3) Or make the best choice.

This song captures isolation and pain perfectly and then at the end the melodic riff comes in and its like HOPE! fark yea!

God I love youtube comments.

So why is it, 30 years later, that nobody sounds as honestly, genuinely pissed off and discontented than Johnny on NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS.... ?

I hear barking but no real bite

Metal rules! Metal sucks!

Love it, hate it, who cares; it's music to some people. Deal with it.

Yeah, I would venture to say metal has gotten enormously more interesting the last few years with post-metal, shoegaze metal or whatever you wanna call it. Regardless, some amazing new stuff out there, Isis, Pelican, Neurosis (old band but still going very strong), Russian Circles, Red Sparrowes just to name a few. Even some of the more traditional "genres" of metal have seen some great new bands join the ranks, High on Fire, Om, Mastodon, Skeletonwitch, Wolves in the Throne Room...

Anyway that video was just utter crap, and thats from a metal fan.

Pyro Messiah 2008-01-30 10:29:37 PM
There is a ton of great metal out there without the retarded garglemouth vocals that so many bands use. Apparently actually singing isn't cool to the mall crowd however.

My favourite part about that video is that they've dropped all the metal and hardcore visual stereotypes, and just shot it as a bunch of dudes rockin' out.

/Gonna dig up my Red Chord album, it's been >2 years since I've listened to it. Thanks for the reminder

Open two tabs, one with this clip and one with the David Lee Roth vocals. Start David at about two seconds in. It's AWESOME.
