It's almost as if the Gen Yers have no ability to appreciate anything that isn't qualified by saying it's "so bad it's good"

Come, guys... sing with me... "Everybody's workin' for retirement!"

Wasn't that a Loverboy song in that Chippendales dance-off skit on SNL with Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze?

whidbey [TotalFark] 2008-01-30 02:05:59 PM
Just curious...

Are Canadians as fiercely protective of Loverboy as they are the Bare Naked Ladies?

I know it's fightin' words to talk smack on them...

No... but dis the Tragically Hip, and I know a couple of people who will gnash their teeth at you.

Nope, at least not to my knowledge.

Saw them (on TV) New Year's Eve. He's Meatloaf big now.

Mr. Coffee Nerves [TotalFark] 2008-01-30 02:26:16 PM
The only thing I remember about Loverboy is when the guitar player (I think the name is Paul Dean) did ads hawking HONDO guitars, which were universally mocked as the absolute Pakistani machine-made garbage that clueless moms bought their equally clueless kids for Christmas.

Meaning, of course, they had a 200% profit margin as opposed to the Jacksons and Hamers we thought were "cool."

ClicheGuevara07 2008-01-30 02:39:06 PM
I hope they go on tour, just so we can all hear "Pig & Elephant D.N.A. Just Won't Splice" again.

Nestea Plunge: Remember when Mike Reno did that awesome duet with Ann Wilson?

I'd like to see them paired up together again. Though they'd have to build a special stage to hold their weight.

FeedTheCollapse 2008-01-30 02:44:13 PM
Loverboy is even remotely associated with metal?

I just remember my friend's dad had a Loverboy t-shirt. He spoke little (if any) English, so I'm sure that explains a lot.

radioberlin 2008-01-30 02:46:08 PM
Why shouldn't they? Everyone else has, hell they're probably the last one.

Me too...hopefully somewhere in the Al-Anbar province in Iraq.

I, for one, would welcome my new Tragically Hip overlords. In this case, I saw the name of the band and stopped reading. That woulda been a few minutes of my life I couldn't get back; not worth it.

The tour would be sponsored by "Starch"

You wouldn't so much attend the show as be caught in its gravitational field.

VH-1 would do a reality show about the tour, FoodTV would do a show about the 600 chefs working every day on the tour, and Discovery would do a show about how the tour single-handedly caused the extinction of the chicken and the potato.

Lorelle: I must be the only person who actualy LIKES Loverboy. :(

No, you're not. Get Lucky is in my car's CD player right now. But holy God, did Mike Reno get fat. I saw them about five years ago and was horrified at how huge he was. Such a shame, I was madly in love with him when I was sixteen.

Loverboy never broke up, they just toured without recording anything new. Yeah, they're playing the county fair/ribfest circuit these days but I imagine they're still making more money than 98% of the people who say they suck.

Holy crap that's bad. Yeah, they have only shown Ann from the neck up for the last decade.

They may have to do the same with Mike Reno:

Back in the day, working at
Record Revolution/Stiff Records
in Cleveland, Loverboy came for an instore promo. The lead singer was hitting on the owner's girlfriend so hard I thought he was just gonna drop drawers and get right to it.

Icky creepy dirty yucky. Red pants, striped shirt, and everything. Ugh.

Farkomatic 2008-01-30 02:56:57 PM
He can really sing, but Mike Reno is bigger than Janet now.

Scooty_Puff_Sr 2008-01-30 03:05:32 PM
Believe me, it can get MUCH worse.

Take it like men or it will.

FilmBELOH20 [TotalFark] 2008-01-30 03:07:07 PM
I got hired to IMAG them a few months ago at a casino. Having grown up in the 80's, I wasn't dreading it so much, but I wasn't much looking forward to it either. I was presently surprised at how good they were. Still in tune, still good singers... very good musicians.

I miss the days where most of the bands in the top 40 could all actually play instruments and harmonize with one another.

Not LOVERBOY! HELL YEAH THEY ROCK!

CavemanCometh: 11 years old.....1986......first concert.....that's right.... Loverboy.

This, except I was 13 and it was 1982.

Subby -0.5 because Loverboy while cheesey and pop, has never been metal.

mishmashmusic 2008-01-30 04:25:16 PM
Metal?

purple helmet 2008-01-30 04:29:41 PM
I own a Camaro and I'm getting a kick....

Loverboy...meh....they had their moments.

Lovin' Every Minute of it was like the greatest song ever when I was in like 9th grade....

I see the connection... they're about as metal as her plastic titties. My lunch is singing "Turn Me Loose".

pngwnpwr 2008-01-30 06:25:47 PM
That shiat never was and never will be metal.

franjrt 2008-01-30 07:05:38 PM
They were fun. No apologies. They went under when Van Halen released 1984 and suddenly MTV wouldn't take their calls.

Hot Girls in Love!

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-01-30 07:08:10 PM
Loverboy had nothing to do with the pop/hair metal. They were just a straight up pop-rock band with a bit of a hard edge. And in all fairness, some pretty darn nice songs.

dougfm 2008-01-30 07:51:10 PM
They played at the local harness racetrack, you could get in to see them by bringing canned goods. And anybody who saw them on that show "Hit Me Baby One More Time" knows that Mike Reno can't sing anymore.

You had to give up a can of garbanzo beans? For that?

You got screwed, dude.

/It's been 20+ years...
/Shouldn't it be Loverman by now?

That's the only connotation the name Loverboy has for me. One of the best episodes of SNL ever. Hans and Franz gay fantasies with Swayze. "He has a plastic penis" sung to the tune of Guantanamera.

MikoSquiz 2008-01-30 09:54:22 PM
Could be worse, could be Van Halen.

Oh, wait.

Seriously. Metal has existed for 40 years and people are still this clueless about what is or is not metal?

This is metal:

That's what I said! About as metal as boron!

I've known about this since October.

BONUS: For this album, they're using the same songwriters that Nickelback makes bank off of.

Seriously. Back in October, I was driving their drum tech to the airport after a local classic rock radio station festival and this some how came up in conversation. I shiat you not.

Sorry, Loverboy fans. Your dreams, I crush them.

I downloaded a hour long video of strung together home made porn videos that used Loverboy's Big Ones (greatest hits CD) as the background music.

Now, I can't listen to any Loverboy music without getting wood.

atomic-age [TotalFark] 2008-01-31 02:11:40 PM
Not. Metal.
