I saw them at Che Stadium. It was named after the famous Cuban guerilla leader Che Stadium.

didn't the drummer (barry wom) play on lou reed's "walk on the wild side?"

i love that they're so accurate with the instruments. the cymbals even have the electrical tape on them.

I loved Jagger in that - he got to make up a few stories sort of based on the Stones/Beatles thing...and he has one of the best overall lines in the thing, too

IDLE: do you think The Rutles will ever get back together?

JAGGER: I hope not!

This. "The Rutles" hews too close to the actual story of the Beatles to really hold up that well, I think. (Yes, I know that's the point.) A lot of the humor is just in seeing things we know -- oh look, they're playing on a roof, just like the Beatles did!

"Spinal Tap" draws from a much larger pool of cultural references, and thus makes more clever jokes that stand up a lot better.

I saw this when I was a little kid and was totally confused. They appeared to be saying goofy and funny things, like it was all a joke, and yet the style was totally "documentary", like it had all really happened.

Call me crazy, but i prefer this one to the original Beatles roof top version!
[neither top the record version, though]
[most of Let it Be is actually pretty good, IMHO.]

It is actually a remake/parody of a documentary called "Meet the Beatles", and "Meet the Rutles" follows the original pretty faithfully, down to the name. But I see your point; I saw 'Rutles' a couple times before I saw "Meet the Beatles" one, and then 'Rutles' made more sense. Sort of.

"Spinal Tap" draws from a much larger pool of cultural references, and thus makes more clever jokes that stand up a lot better.

I see your point here. However, 'Spinal Tap'(1984) is sort of a remake of 'Bad News' (1982), starring the cast of The Young Ones. (this was a different 'series' called The Comic Strip):

the best lines in the movie are:

Eric Idle - What's it like to be such an a**hole?
Dan Aykroyd - *cough* What?

Seeing that again after all these years, I'm almost ready to accuse Macca of actually doing the vocal.

I mean, Neil Innes does a great Lennon, but that sounds like the real Paul to me.

Correct. John "Admiral" Halsey also used to be in two superlative bands, Timebox and Patto. The guitarist for those bands provided the vocals and guitar for the Eric Idle character. His name was Ollie Halsall and was a respected musician. Sadly, he passed away in Spain in 1992. He can be seen briefly in the film as Leppo. I think Halsey runs a pub in Cambridge and a quick search will give you the name. I also saw Ricky Fataar recently on tour with Bonnie Raitt but he wasn't wearing his Rutles suit.

I have the album (yes, album). I bought it in my college bookstore in 1982.

We used to crank it up on my big-ass Infinity speakers and bug the shiat out of our neighbors.
