Especially if you don't know who Gnarls Barkley is, Subby.

queezyweezel 2008-01-29 04:27:00 AM
With the exception or Gnarls Barkley, I doubt any of those bands will even hit the top 50.

This weasel agrees.

Cat Power FTW.

Sun Kil Moon? Seriously?

Three Mile Pilot should be releasing a new album this year. This has been my most-anticipated album since the beginning of '07. With the experience Zach, Tom, Tobias and Pall have gained since the last 3MP album (while rocking in Black Heart and Pinback), there's no way this album can't be the best thing ever. (Please, words, don't come back to haunt me.)

I have a personal rule (and this is not a musical statement): If you weren't alive when Kurt Cobain was killed by Courtney Love, then you don't really exist, since that happened, like, last Wednesday, as far as I recall.

It's too bad more classic-rawk types don't know about My Morning Jacket,
'cause they'd probably really dig them. (and that new Cat Power is sweet too)

Santogold is getting a big push currently in certain underground dance circles.

Not mentioned but shoulda been: the upcoming Spiritualized album.

Late on Sunday nights, there's some channel that replays old MTV "120 Minutes" shows.

I watch it so I can feel hip.

I have such a dislike for all these new bands being sardonic by wearing their guitars under their chins. I'm looking at you The Whigs.

/good tunes though

I'm thinking I need to get off my fogey butt and listen to MMJ one of these days. Too many people have too many good things to say about them

That said, the only things I'm really looking forward to right now are the Alliance record and/or the first Bounty Killer album in 6 years, Buju's "Rasta Got Soul" if it ever comes out, and at least 3 of the 5 or 6 Midnite albums which are inevitable. I like to think I've neatly sidestepped the whole "oh noes, I can't keep up with today's kids' music" thing. And the nice thing about reggae fandom is: I don't know what your favorite band's release schedule is, but mine works on an almost bimonthly basis.

/Bullet bullet

Anyone who hasn't checked out the Black Keys,

SHOULD (pops)
be prepared to laugh ass off halfway in

ill be really surprised if MMJ doenst break the top 50. rolling stone slobbed their collective knob on their last cd (which actually was a good cd)

I remember when Kurt Cobain was killed.
I remember saying: "Who the fark is Kurt Cobain?"

reading some of the comments and have to agree with Portishead!

I started putting one of these together about a week ago but I came to the realization that my musical tastes are all over the place. My top three supposed 2008 projects were Gang of Four, Deltron 3030, and The Faint.

Tourney3p0 2008-01-29 06:16:54 AM
I had no idea My Morning Jacket was actually famous. I haven't seen them in a couple years, but they used to play clubs and other events here all the time. I don't really remember anything distinctive about them, except that they sounded exactly like every other band that plays the local scene. I do remember being pissed off one night when I wanted to drink and they wanted a 5 dollar cover, even though I told them I'd sit outside so I didn't have to listen to their crappy band.

Either they've changed a hell of a lot for the better, or the music industry is completely farked in 2008.

Not looking at your profile, but I'm guessing mid-thirties too? Yeah, last month at the longest. I got punched for laughing when I heard the news, but I was coming down from some heavy acid if that's any excuse.

No idea who all but two of these bands are. Hipness is but a distant memory, thank f**k.

Oh My God.

If most people even knew what goes into making some of these band's CDs, let alone the kind of people they are...

I'm going to say it, and it's going to hurt: most American music is absolutely foul - and ill conceived to boot.

/Yes, music industry insider
//Why yes, I know a lot of people high up in the American music industry. Why do you ask?
///Yes again - Jesus, I cannot stress enough how phony and appalling most successful American bands actually are. If you spent more than five minutes in a room with most of them, every single thing you thought you liked would melt like a roasted dump on a hot day.

Your wife had a baby, didn't she?

I was a total music-head until my wife had twins. Then things went dark for about ten years. It was nothing but being a dad, and music was Barney and Raffi. Now my twins are 16 and I've gotten into music again. But for the most part, all this "new music" isn't as good as my "old music." I find myself going back again and again to the comfort-food of the music I listened to when I was in my teens and 20's.

Hoping for a new Th' Legendary Shack Shakers album, this year.

A new Gein and the Graverobbers album would be nice, too.(And has the bonus of making my fiancee happy, too!)(Damn am I glad they finally got a non-MySpace site!)

I really don't give a crap about how they behave or what they are like in person. I'm far too old to worry about role models and I'll never meet them anyway. If I wanted role models I'd go to church.

/Yeah, I enjoy gawking at the trainwrecks as much as anybody. Doesn't mean I like the music, except Rehab. That one was good.

He he. Liked that one :-)

Nah, it's just something that irritates me after a few refreshing beverages sometimes... I guess it would be usually dismissed as envy, which is funny considering I wouldn't wish the fate of a young major label band on *anyone*. But certainly Fall Out Boy is one of the bands that could be encapsulated in my original post...

EatHam [TotalFark] 2008-01-29 06:59:56 AM
I recognized two of those.

Yeah. How many bands have we heard of that have a huge debut album but somehow still owe the record company money after selling 6 million copies?

And now that CD's aren't selling, the record companies want the profits from touring, which used to be the only way bands made money.

I felt special because I've heard of at least one other band than Weezer. Then I realized how sad that could be.

// I'm only 20.

buddy of mine has a friend whose brother was the lead singer of a late 90s ska-punk band who hit it kinda big (this band shall remain nameless). said he turned from the nicest, sweetest kid into an amazing asshole. then when everything inevitably fell apart he had to crawl back to his old friends and try to make up for treating them like dirt.

My most anticipated release of 2008 would be Simple Mind Condition by Trouble except that it's already been out in Europe for nearly a freakin year, and I can't see paying $35 for something that is supposed to come out here... eventually.

So I guess I'll have to go with Chinese Democracy.

I did not realise that a new Wolf Parade album is coming out soon, that has made my day.

The first album 'Apologies To The Queen Mary' is amazing and is on constant rotation on my MP3 player. Would recommend it to anyone who likes their indie.

When 15-year-old Weezer is the only band subby recognizes, it's time to realize the world has moved on.

It came as a painful realization to us all. Welcome to irrelevency (is that a word?).

I've only heard of Weezer and Gnarles Barkley on that list and I don't listen to either. However, I am looking forward to Queen's new studio album with Paul Rogers. It won't be anything like their previous albums and it won't be anything without Freddie Mercury, but still, it's something new to listen to that actually has thought and skill in it.

/plus a tour!

Uber_Controller 2008-01-29 08:13:07 AM
The Gutter Twins' Saturnalia! Dude, I can not wait! Collaboration between Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan! w00t!

/exclamation points entirely necessary!

Drive-By Truckers and Cat Power FTW. They weren't on the list, but they were mentioned in the opening paragraph, so I think they count.

/25 going on 60, as the music industry goes

suicide 2008-01-29 08:19:29 AM
to everyone saying they havent heard of anyone on this list: not to give entertainment weekly too much credit, but i'd rather deal with "anticipated" being a bit of a misnomer than hear about the same bands for the millionth time that get a ton of ink no matter what they put out. read what the article has to say about the bands and maybe, just maybe, expand your horizons a bit. if everyone only listened to stuff theyve heard of before, we'd all be listening to raffi and the beatles until the day we die.

FeedTheCollapse 2008-01-29 08:30:16 AM
No My Bloody Valentine? Epic fail! (especially since such an event will actually occur!)

I'm certainly not anticipating anything on that list :)

And she's a cutie.

Cosmosis: Hoping for a new Th' Legendary Shack Shakers album, this year.

Any record they can release that would capture the energy of one of their live shows would be outstanding. Best live set I've ever seen from any band was Shack Shakers in 2004 at Cowboy Monkey in Champaign, IL.
