FTA: Phone and e-mail messages left for Apple on Sunday night were not immediately returned.

They expected someone to answer the phone or emails Sunday night? If you send me an email Sunday night, you damn well not better expect a reply before Monday. Even to my personal account.

Wow, that's just sloppy, even for CNN. I designate Sunday night as a 'fire time'. If you call on business you better be on fire because otherwise I'll probably ignore it.

/except I usually won't...

Claims to be supported by all the major labels, except it isn't.

So what it is is useless, if I'm reading this correctly.

Give me good quality MP3's or I'm sticking with torrents..

My favorites will still be bought on CD for the superior quality.

this exact story is only 7 links down the page in the geeks section... the greenlighters seem to have gotten really lazy lately.

Nothing outside of Apple will be iPod compatible. Steve declares that you should buy his stuff and his stuff only. The only way he'd agree to anything like this is if he got most of the profits and all the credit for 'inventing' it.

I have __________ and that's all I need. It has everything that is out there. If you dl 24 hours a day, you're still just scratching the surface of what's available.

For whatever reason, the powers that be never talk about __________, and that's just fine by me. All of this other stuff just makes me laugh.

The place to be is on __________. Mp3, wav, whatever format you want.

I buy the stuff I really like because I too want the best available audio quality and package, plus I want to throw some support to that band/musician.

I've made it a point to take all of these music service providers' claims with a grain of salt until we can actually see what they will be providing, especially since my friend tried to get me to join in on the BurnLounge pyramid scheme a few years back.

TFA: That's unusual, as iPods only playback unrestricted MP3s files or tracks with Apple's proprietary version of DRM, dubbed FairPlay.

And non-DRM AAC files (that's mp4 audio). And AIFF. And WAV. And Apple Lossless. And Audible.com audiobooks.

Pretty much the only commonly-used audio format the iPod doesn't play is Microsoft's proprietary WMA format. Sloppy fact-checking CNN, sloppy.

FTFY. jobs doesn't care if you steal stuff. he just doesn't want other people's protected stuff on their iPods.

corporate logic, for the loss!

someone shoulda posted this with the headline "Millions left unsatisfied as record giants pull out of music download site prematurely" that would've been funny

I read p2p as psp. Didn't change the meaning regardless.

DRM is just a joke, if you have audio out and audio in, all you need is a male/male audio cable and a sound recorder. One of those comes with Windows and will encode mp3s (crappy mp3s but mp3s nonetheless) with none of that DRM bullshiat. Lo-tech pirates, ha!

meddlin' kid 2008-01-28 03:55:39 PM
Archie Godwin: P2P programs are for nubs. Anyone that uses them deserves everything they get.

...like unmediated access to decent music? yeah, i agree they deserve that.

When only pirates can have DRM freedom only pirates will have DRM freedom.

Yeah, when they started coming up with this 'next-gen rights management' crap, i seriously figured they were going to disable playback through hardware or something more airtight and less re-re.

I was puzzling over that line myself. I thought maybe CNN knew something I didn't.

/sorry...

Let's say that very soon, all of a sudden this thing, with all the major labels, does actually get up and running as described...

What about the record contracts...doesn't this alter the terms of artists' contracts? They have advertising revenue from this site, but that's not the same as x number of units sold..

Plus, if this site actually goes up...the independent artists will be effected...who would pay for theirs, when they could get majors for free?

Also, it would seem this would crash iTunes into the dirt.

Observe my actions...Subscribe to Yahoo! Music Unlimited, stream any song on my computer. Download old version of Jet Audio, record streaming music as a WMA = pwnd.

I'm paying for my music. I'm not DJ'ing with it, just burning CD's. Sounds good. ROCK!

It's kind of like DVR, or recording a TV show, except not.
