Trained retired police dogs as loving pets. What could possibly go wrong?

Trained magic tigers as loving.... wait no.. that won't work... uh...

... I stick by the police dog thing though, had two very bad experiences with ex-police dogs, enough that i have a very found fear of belgian/german shepards.

Yeah, too lovable to be mean. Anyway, subby is a douche, and there's shelters that have been helping rehabilitate former fighting dogs for a long time, and their efforts are commendable in proving that it's having a douchenozzle for an owner, and not really the dog.

anywho, flame on!

This is like the article you read every couple years about a guy trying to "tame" wolves.

It is usually written after he's been mauled.

kingMountain [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 06:45:33 PM
as long as you treat it like you would any other 200lb seething ball of muscle and subcutaneous rage, you'll be fine.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 06:49:11 PM
Actually, if the old news reports are correct, these dogs are already pretty friendly towards humans. They've been raised since birth, though, to attack other dogs. I don't foresee any people being mauled by them. But I could see a problem with something as simple as taking them for a walk.

Yeah, you think it's cute, just laying their all docile like... but those are crocodile tears (pitbull naps?). It's luring you into a false sense of security so it can eat your liver. That's why it brings you the paper in the morning. So that you fatten yourself up. Mmmm. Human paté.

/Kidding.

Haha, since i got her, i've been going around the house following her sometimes(yeah, i'm usually pretty stoned when i do this)talking like Steve Irwin, describing the normal habits of the docile housebrokeus-pitbulluswussyus.

I'm glad i don't have people following me around with camera's; they'd think i'm batshait insane :(

Well done, subby, for saying what the rest of us were really thinking

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 07:53:34 PM
It sounds like these dogs are going to people who are aware of the potential hazards of owning a pit bull, and know how to deal with them.

These dogs have a chance now. If they'd stayed in the hands of that scumbag Ron Mexico, those dogs would all be dead now. They'd either have torn each other to bits, or Ronnie and the other pieces of shiat around him would have killed them by electrocuting them, or by picking them up by their legs and bashing their skulls into the ground.

I get the same crap about having a pet alligator! People are all: "Aren't you worried about your two year old son?" but that gator has never bitten me! It's all in how you raise them.

FTFA: now nurtured by Nuccio, her roommate, Danielle White, and their three other dogs.

Those other dogs are doomed. But I'm glad they're giving this one a chance at a normal, healthy life. I just hope they keep an eye on him the first year or so.

"It sounds like these dogs are going to people who are aware of the potential hazards of owning a pit bull, and know how to deal with them."

That's OK 'cause it is usually the neighbours little kid that gets mauled to death. Euthanize these monsters and ban the breed like we did in Ontario. They don't look so cute when their jaws are locked on your neck.

95south 2008-01-27 09:18:23 PM
As the owner of a Pitbull I personally would be too scared to own a dog that's been raised as a fighting dog, regardless of breed.

is it worth it though? i feel bad for these dogs, but there are plenty of well adjusted dogs that need homes and could use the resources that these animals will use.

not to mention people could be spending these resources and money on PEOPLE.

I love animals, my father is a well known dog trainer, I've grown up with attack dogs, blah blah blah, but when it comes down to it, I think we should take care of people in need before we go above and beyond for animals.

Holy crap, what an awful piece of writing.

But as Hector sits up, deep scars stand out on his chest, and his eyes are imploring.

Imploring? What on earth does that mean? "C'mon, drop the baby, drop the baby..."

...and a "rape stand" used to restrain female dogs that did not submit willingly to breeding.

And this is just outright offensive... rape doesn't mean anything when you're talking about dogs. Comparing breeding dogs to rape is really losing sight of what rape is.

"Are you going to kill me now?" was the message another evaluator, Donna Reynolds, read in Uba's eyes.

And dog psychics... great, just great.

I can't even read any more -- this is such crap journalism, I can't do it.

FAIL.

All this money and resources are coming directly from Vick, so I'm not gonna complain about it.

Yeah, because no one, regardless of what they find rewarding, should devote their time/effort/money to anything that isn't directly helping humans in need. All efforts are a zero sum game, and by wasting time on dogs, you are effectively killing humans.

Yeah, these people are wasting their time.... feel free to get back to posting on fark.

I wish them well. And I really do hope that it works out. But it is hard to take the fight out of a dog. And it is even harder to get the dogs trust. Especially after what these dogs have been through.

I'm not saying to put it down, but they need to be carefull. Anything could trigger old memories and set the dog into violent behavior. We adopted a dog that had been beaten for several years, and it took a lot of work to get him to trust people again. And at that he still didn't like strangers.

Oh yes, hi. Note that I originally mentioned the numerous dogs that need homes that don't require months of intensive retraining and socialization?

All I'm saying is sometimes a needle is a much more rational decision than trying to change stripes.

I love "pibbles" and am a huge advocate of responsible ownership.

That said, I think it's unwise to be rehoming these dogs. We know very little about their background, but what we DO know is that it was very violent and that they were trained to fight. I hate to say it, and it's very upsetting to me, but I would rather see them euthanized and at peace than have something go wrong with their new homes and see even MORE negative pitbull news.

Poor babies.
