(MSNBC) Interesting Whole Foods cashiers will no longer ask "paper or plastic." However they will still ask "would you like to finance your groceries today with low interest, adjustable rate 30 year mortgage?"   (msnbc.msn.com) divider line 267

Ban plastic bags? Then I'll just have to let my dog's shiat stay where it falls. Sorry, I'm not allowed to have the bags I need to pick it up.

TsuZi 2008-01-27 04:31:13 PM
Fine. Then I'm not recycling anymore. The Whole Foods by me offers to bag your foods in blue bags that the city will pick up your recycling in. I always pick up the blue bags when I do my shopping there because then it doesn't cost me anything. Otherwise, I'd have to buy special bags and when I already have access to a garbage dumpster for free, why spend the money?

And what Radioman_ said. I keep regular plastic bags in a reused baby wipes container, in which I pull them out to pick up my dog's crap. But, no-- that's fine. I'll stop doing that too.

Whole Foods is not that expensive when you realize that unlike Safeway, PW, A&P, or wherever you shop, it is not factory produced food. Besides, Americans eat too much anyway. We should all eat more greens and not so much. This whole baconator culture is driving all you to your graves too early with severely diminished lives. Get out and play and don't eat meat for every meal. It's 2000 calories a day, not each meal.

//Get offa my lawn and outta my vegetable patch.
///Take my own bags to WF and get .05 back for each time I use one.

This. Americans spend less than any other industrialized country on groceries too. We haven't realized that real food doesn't come in a box with a 50 year shelf life. We don't understand that meals shouldn't cost three dollars.

I shop almost exclusively at WholeFoods and I can feed a family of three for $200 a week, including beer and wine. Plus I have the added satisfaction of knowing that I'm not pumping my family full of synthetic chemicals and hormones.

As for the bags, why is it so difficult for Americans to embrace the reusable grocery bag? They are bigger, more sturdy, and easier to carry that either plastic of paper. Why wouldn't you use one?

yeah, well, around here, it's called Whole Paycheck. Your family must not eat much, or else not much at home.

Whole Foods is borderline stupid-expensive, IMHO, but worth it when you consider health-care costs for those following the typical American fast-food/convenience regimen.

The problem with being environmentally friendly is that it is incredibly dull. This article is 2 pages on plastic bags. Fark of The Future weeps in despair at what is to come.

whole foods is yummy. i don't care about the health benefits that much, the food just tastes better.

that being said i reuse plastic bags for everything from cleaning my car out to cleaning up cat poo.

You can find cheap, smaller plastic bags in most big retail stores.

I have a few cloth ones I've picked up over the years. I can load 'em up with canned goods and they won't break. Sometimes I'll get a plastic bag for the litter box but usually I use paper for that.

You can buy ramen and hotdogs for soooo much cheaper than buying at Whole Foods! Thus, Whole Foods must be bad.

Whole foods can kiss my arse. Here's just another gigantic company marketing to all the "green" zombies. Why not find one of the myriad of farmer's markets that's actually selling local, sustainable produce than go to Whole Foods where they've flown blueberries from Argentina that come from an "Organic" farm which is gravitationally below a non-organic farm.

/end rant

Yeah subby, you should stick to that McDonald's dollar value menu. It's not like you're getting any value for that few extra bucks a week you'd spend at Whole Foods/Henry's.

Personally, I shop at Trader Joes, which I find to be consistently CHEAPER than the grocery store.

Um. I don't have a local farmer's market. (I also don't shop at Whole Foods, but I find the rants against them to be so entertainingly stupid).

I shop there, too, but I prefer my groceries to be local (or at least not flown in from other countries, using more petroleum than should be used for broccoli and tomatoes and such).

I've had roast beef from Whole Foods a couple times. And both times it's been too rare and about 10% string connective tissue that makes it inedible.

They do have some good stuff. Their sodas are good. But if I want expensive chocolate I'll just go to World Market. And there's always Trader Joe's.

Finally got my Chico Bags from a co-op (wholesale buy by a lot of people). I am so in love with these things.

Just try, TRY to get 20lbs of groceries into a plastic bag without it breaking. I put an entire watermelon, and a bunch of apples (4-ish lbs) into one chico bag, and it was still comfortable to carry.

What's funny is if you're someone who is of the attitude that less waste is better, you don't *need* the plastic grocery bags for garbage. Almost all of our 'waste' is compostable.

And we live off $80/wk for food (family of three - including a one year old who eats a ton despite being only 20lbs).

jshine 2008-01-27 08:04:50 PM
This is stupid. We use those as our garbage bags almost exclusively. If we didn't get them free from the store, we'd just buy them anyway, and the same number would end up in the trash. The end result would be -- from an environmental perspective -- identical.

It's just so absurd that people get their panties in a bunch over probably 0.001% of the pollution problem while ignoring the real issues. China banned plastic bags? OOOhhh -- that'll make a difference. I still get black snot walking down the street due to all the air pollution. ...but I guess that since this inconveniences people though, it must be helping -- just like bad tasting food must be healthy. It's like the Puritan attitude -- if it's miserable & annoying, it must be good for you, so inconvenience yourself as much as possible in order to help the earth.

Gotta say I am with you on the farmer's markets, that is the only place I shop when I am home. However I am working far from home and there is a WF nearby that I am pretty appreciative of. On their produce at least, they do in fact do country of origin labeling. So I can stick to buying as local as possible. Most of the chain grocery stores I checked out don't have any labeling at all for where things come from.

A couple day ago I bought some Swiss Chard from Whole foods. Because it was damp, I put in in one of the plastic bags they supply for customers to use when purchasing fresh vegetables from the display.

This evening I use the chard (in a nice Lebanese lentil / potato stew, if you're interested) and, when I looked at the bag, I noticed that it not only had a Whole Foods logo on it, It also had a statement that the bag would "decompose" if exposed to light for long enough.

So the plastic bags you can get at Whole Foods are, at least potentially, environmentally friendly.

/Don't knock it - we all live here together

Meh, the Whole Foods employees by me don't even speak English, let alone acknowledge that you exist. Terrible customer service, they're always horsing around and act annoyed when they bump into you.

Now, Wegman's, that's a whole other ball game. As far back as '99 they were doing so much training that they actually successfully rolled out e-Learning to their stores, to people who were computer illiterate.

Whole Foods sucks.

I wish they would ban plastic bags where I live. The local grocery store will get pissy if you ask for paper. God forbid you bring your own bags, they will probably give you a beat down at the check out.

Sure they made their token effort that they clearly don't want anyone to do. They put some odd sized canvas bags with the store name on them by the Starbucks stand. Then they put these green reusable bags UNDER the registers where nobody will see them unless your pulling something off the bottom of the cart. They are also made out of interfacing, they are not even woven fabric. So technically yes they are selling them and purposely making it so nobody will buy them. Later they will claim they quit doing it because nobody wanted to.

I brought my reusable bag in there once, a bagger walked by put the canvas bag in a plastic bag and walked off.
