Yeah, but i've seen similar things happen in corporate america, as well as in local/state government. So really, is this any surprise?

Now all we need to find out is that the principal and the boys basketball coach were doing a bunch of booze and blow in the teacher's lounge and farking on the warmer table in the cafeteria.

Try to work with the school board here, and all you get is yawned at.

If I had been suspended every time I went after my school board, I would still be in middle school.

Girl deserves a hero tag. Can she take on my school board? Just a bunch of business people with no educational experience and serving as Yes-men to our superintendents. Makes me sick.

aw my first green light. it's a big nerdy day in this farkette's life.

The Buff News is all on this shiat. For once, the paper is actually writing newsy stuff.

I hope it works out for this girl. This is the same school where the superintendent personally escorted four students back after a 5-day suspension for attacking a teacher, citing "kids need to be in school if they're going to have a chance to succeed."

Asshattery at its finest.

/Sigh

What we really need to do is raise property taxes in order to fund more improvements for public schools. They can't afford textbooks and the classrooms are horribly overcrowded, that's why Johnny can't read.

cpux 2008-01-27 06:24:33 PM
Well we all know the biggest threat to society today is high school girls who get all snippy whenever they perceive something as "unfair" just because their favorite coach got the boot over something incredibly trivial.

Good find vfarker, congrats on your first greenlight. Let's hope this story reaches less apathetic ears and maybe the girl gets some justice. The coach dating the player's "older cousin"/ spreading the lesbian rumours about the volunteer sounds like an immature creep.

Considering shiate like this is an everyday occurance in public schools, it´s no wonder kids go Columbine on each other. I hope they can whoop some administrative ass all the way to the unemployment line or at the very least get them suspended without pay.

I wonder what the boys' coach had to worry about... after all, his paranoia was what started the whole mess. Either he was doing something he shouldn't have, and the whole stink is being made because of that, or those in power are just pissed off that a bunch of "mere students," are trying to hold them accountable for what they do. Nothing irks a petty official like having people they see as beneath them pointing out the errors in their handling of any given situation.

Crap like that happens all the time, sadly. People don't like being called out for their behavior, and if they're in a position of power, they'll use that power to get back at the people who dared to point out their flaws.

The students were foolish to break school policy in trying to get their complaints addressed. If you're going to demand that petty bureaucrats do the right thing, especially if you're "just a student," you can't do anything wrong. They'll get you for dress-code violations, they'll get you for tardiness, they'll get you for anything if you step one toe out of line. You have to be Perfect. If they catch you doing anything wrong, they'll give you the harshest punishment they can hand out, while calling into question your character and worth as a student (while also getting you out of their hair for a solid length of time).

The students should have called from home, with their parents on the other line, and had their parents write out their consent with witnesses and all that crap. If you have to say anything, best to say it in writing first (and keep copies of it).

If you're going to rock the boat, make sure you know how to swim in choppy waters.

culebra: Well, she gets to learn early that many of those in authority are full of shiat and vindictive to boot. Justice is the last thing with which these people are concerned.

Pretty much. After looking up 'what does a school board do' in Google, I found out that the people on this school board are people who live in district and have unchecked power to manage the schools in terms of budget and 'vision' (which is corporatese for 'power' and 'I guess our jobs are important because we have POWER').

If the young lady is really determined, I'd say she should use those seven months to speak out against the school board and see if she can spread her story enough to garner enough ill will to get the school board fired. At the very least, enough bad press should cause the power these douchebags are getting to weaken a little. It's one thing to be 'respected,' it's quite another to labeled as a power freak who's more than willing to go after high school students. That won't fly well at all.

Great Janitor 2008-01-27 06:34:38 PM
My sister is trying to take on her daughter's school board. As a shock to only her and no one else, she's getting no where.

What happened was her husband was dropping off their daughter for school (she's in Kindergarten) last November. The security guard told him that it was alright to park there if dropping someone off. The school assistant principal didn't like that, told him to get his daughter back into the car, drive 15 feet further up the drive way, and then drop her off. After telling the Ass. Principal that the daughter was already out of the car, that he was told that it would be okay by the security guard, and that it was asinine to have his daughter get back into the car only to be dropped off again in under a second. The Ass. Principal screamed that he was being violent, put the school into lock down and put a lifetime ban against him from ever being able to set foot onto school property again.

So, my sister shows up to see if she can get this whole thing cleared up. The school said "You'll have to talk to the school board, we can only ban people, we can't lift bans once they are in place.", then said, "We have the whole thing on tape, every inch of the outside of the school is covered by security cameras." So they gave her the name and number to someone on the school board. They refused to show what happened between the Ass. principal and her husband. The security guard who escorted my sister in and out of the building (because of the lock down her husband created) told her "They told you that? The reason why they won't show you what happened is because those cameras aren't hooked up to anything."

Now, almost November, she can't get a hold of that person, and she's been calling daily, and someone else told her that school boards don't handle banninations, it's really up to the schools, and they just don't want to and are just putting her through a run around over nothing.

TrixieDelite 2008-01-27 06:34:42 PM
Stand and Deliver!
She's right to take on the system and use her voice.
I hope she ends up being an inspiration to her classmates, and the girl voted "Most likely to succeed."
The best vindication would be for her to join the school board when she's older and more experienced.
Give 'em hell, Jayvonna.

Aidan [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 06:34:59 PM
Well holy shiat.
You get one person who's actually trying to do something right, and she and all of her supporters get systematically shut down with a vengeance.
All I can hear in my head right now is the school board going "Get back in the ghetto! Back!" What assholes.

Great Janitor: My sister is trying to take on her daughter's school board.

Why your sister hasn't threatened a lawsuit is beyond me. I would have been talking to a lawyer when they started giving you the silent treatment. And calling a few TV stations to offer up your side of the story. There's always a few good investigative reporters around to really fark with administrative types.

pvd021 2008-01-27 06:40:27 PM
Another example of the American Public School System FAILING Miserably.

These Board of Education is just another POS administration group who care very little about their jobs and duties and care more about padding their paycheck and resumes.

Honestly if we cared that much about REAL Education, things like this should never happen and debates about Evolution and God Creating the world would be summed up in a 3 minute response -1 minute of laughing and pointing, 1.5 minute of telling these morons the Bible isn't science and .5 minutes of telling them to get the hell out of their office or area of business.

Oh_Enough_Already 2008-01-27 06:41:21 PM
Actually, the fact that schools and school boards have gotten insanely Gestapo-like (sorry for the Goodwin, but it's apt) with their Zero Tolerance policies and the squelching of dissent and abrogation of civil rights and the like is not an accident.

This is where children have their first experience with "the state" and/or governmental authority.

After a few successive generations of students passing through school completely brainwashed into accepting as inevitable if not "okay" the authoritarian and totalitarian God-like power of the government these children will grow into adults equally brow-beaten into obedience.

This is no accident.

All part of the long-term plan.

Take heed.

Disobey.

Well, that's what you get for catching The Man out with someone else's cousin. Except he's not The Man, he's a friend of The Man.

He must have some serious dirt on the Principal; the Principal's in a world of hurt because of this, and he's still sticking to his story. That means Coach has something totally juicy. Can't wait to see the followup when it's revealed.

The entire public education system is run by organized labor...what do you expect from these people?

If school boards and school faculties actually had to answer to someone, and faced threat of being fired, they wouldn't be so arrogant or incompetant.

I hate to pull one from the MPAA/RIAA playbook, but it works...

File a lawsuit.

Get all of the information via subpoena then drop the suit after you have the info.

Same way the MPAA/RIAA gets personal info from the ISPs so they can drop the case and hand it to their collection agency.

You can't buy an education like that!

As someone that works with children/adolescents, this coach is a mandatory reporter and bound by law to report any suspicions of an adult abusing a child. If this guy was taking advantage of the student and she didn't report her suspicions, then she could be held liable.

She poked around enough to find out that the guy was visiting the girl's older cousin and then she left it alone. She did nothing wrong and the asshat guy, also being a mandatory reporter, should have known that she did the right thing.

Kat [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 06:51:05 PM
This is just sad. A seven week suspension is ridiculous, for anything. The only things that would warrant a seven week suspension should just lead to an expulsion instead.

The worst part is it sounds like this girl has been working very hard to change her hand in life. Her grandmother seems to actually care about her, and she's involved in afterschool activities. SHe sounds like a real winner (no sarcasm) considering the background it appears she came from (murdered sister).

/on side note,

Relieved, Stiles said she had no plans to press the issue further. But about a week later, Daye confronted Stiles and was angry over what he considered her meddling.
