Call their parents on speaker phone in front of the class so said kid can be yelled at by mom in front of his/her peers.

According to the California Teacher's Association, all it takes to create good teachers is money. Lots and lots of money. That and lifetime tenure with no possibility of firing. For the children.

"what makes a good teacher?"

The short answer is "no".

What was the "ad homs" count in that thread? "Ad homs" was the funniest thing I'd read in a while.

Ability to ignore the entirety of what used to constitute a classical education in favor of pap designed to instill a sense of entitlement and achievement without any effort or perseverance?

Along with a willingness to stamp out any notion of imagination or initiative by labeling those who express them as diseased and in need of medication?

To be a good teacher, you need to be a NYC air traffic controller, combined with Dead Poets' Society artsiness.

To be fair, the female teachers tend to go for the teen boys, the Catholic priests go for the pre-teaans, and the weird uncles go for the rest.

yup that pretty much sums it up.

Miss Misery: For me, a good teacher was one who didn't hate me for no reason, tell me my dog had no soul, and that both lucky and me were going to hell.

your dog is an innocent animal so he makes it to heaven automatically. You, on the other hand are responsible for causing too many teenage boys to masturbate due to your looks, your brazeness, and your conscupience. (never really figured out what conscupience was)

so its off to hell with you missy.

Not enough for meme status? Darn. Though your performance was excellent.

As for TFA, a good teacher provokes discussion, research (just to show up the teacher), anything that makes the student think about the material after the bell rings. How do they do that? By asking questions of the students, engaging them, maybe even being a jerk that makes the students do work.

grapefruitgal [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 07:05:05 PM
What makes a good teacher is the ability to think quickly, react and change directions when students aren't engaged or understanding. This requires knowledge of and caring and interest for the students and material. There is no measure for this.

/It helps to also be able to do 15 things at once.

Hey, fark you, subby. I'm an attractive 23 year old working my ass off in an inner city middle school for low pay and no respect from my students and co-workers. It drives me crazy that a few morally depraved pederasts have made me feel like I have to go out of my way to show I don't want to fark a 12 year old. I don't need your judgment and disrespect too. Give us a break.

This article is actually pretty accurate.

I am went to princeton and I was going to program computers but decided to do the NYC teaching fellows thing, and it's working out. Sure it's hard and all the usual problem of the kids being annoying and disrespectful and under grade level apply, but I am having fun and I am seriously considering a career in teaching.

I do get pissed off at the policy makers who have never been in the classroom. If you're going to make policy that affect teachers, I think that they should have some experience in the classroom.

John Dewey 2008-01-27 09:06:44 PM
I think that they should have some experience in the classroom.

They've had experience in the classroom. 13 years of it. 17 if you count college. What more could someone need?

Besides, I don't buy the experience in the classroom = brilliance. Might make it more likely, but I've known plenty of administrators who have had YEARS in the classroom and are just as idiotic as policymakers. In fact, some of them I just want to squint my eyes at and say, "So, what happened that made them want you out of the classroom so badly?"

mr0x 2008-01-27 10:23:51 PM
The problem is not the teachers.

I think it's the problem that people think teachers should be some sort of entertainers, some adult version of Barney that teaches you math instead of the alphabets.

Teachers are just supposed to be people you ask for help if you need help and that they can deliver help when needed.

It's up to the students to figure out what they want to do, and the administrators to make a system where the students have rewards for the work they do.

Please no more of this bullshiat about good teachers and such.

John Dewey 2008-01-27 10:27:36 PM
where the students have rewards for the work they do.

Isn't learning a reward in and of itself?

And I'm not talking about what passes for learning as schools are currently organized.

dangelder 2008-01-27 10:30:41 PM
It's been ten years since I set foot on high school campus, and my most vivid memories of the teachers all involve then trying to bust me down for smoking or being high or something. It's like they were obsessed with me personally!

/Loves the personal attention

NO.

Not when learning is done in void like it is now. You fail, you're the top of your class - nobody knows or cares.

I didn't mean reward like in candy but psychological reward where people can say I'm cooler because I got better score than you.
