There's no hope for me, then. I'm replying to this while watching TV in bed.

Most of the world is addicted to technology. I'm addicted to cars, refrigeration, electric light, television, and a host of other technologies which I habitually use and without which I would feel lost.

AaaPha 2008-01-27 11:13:10 AM
Oddly, I'm not at all addicted. Went on a camping holiday with the family a few months back, not net, PC or phone, barely noticed. Reliant for the most part, yes, not addicted.

I'm just taking breaks between watching DVDs of college lectures and doing economics homework, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

/Obligatory.

You're reading this online on a Sunday

Fortunately, my valet prints out a hardcopy each Sunday morning so I can read it offline.

Communication aids such as texting and e-mail may actually hamper our abilities to have more important face-to-face conversations.

Hell yes. I'd say it makes the premise of the article seem a bit ridiculous, except I DRTA...

Always knew it was true on an abstract level, but never really thought about it personally until I was without power or tech of almost any kind one year when a hurricane hit. Yes, it was serene and sort of pleasant in some ways, but the complete and utter lack of white noise was really freaky.

/also, it was difficult to cook and I was far more bored than I'd have expected
//am prepared with many more books and candelbrae for the next time

I'm really not.

1) I own an unlocked phone so I can easily switch my sim card between handsets
2)Own many different techologies which you rarely use or need (i.e. Tape to DVD converter, TV tuner in your PC
3) Can basically resolve other people's tech problems, because you've gone through them yourself, and have read so many manuals you could become a copy editor for one
4) The room where you have most of your electronic goodies looks as cramped as Mr Universe's place from "Serenity"

"addiction to technology" is only the first phase in a plan by psychiatrists to eventually make money by getting us to pay $100/hour three times a week by telling us we're sick and need help and push more pills down our throats.

/yeah, donned the foil hat early today
//but it looks like a pirate hat, so it's cool
///unlike my foil Star Trek communicator that I also wear on my shirt, who's effectiveness I haven't figured out yet

I don't know about addicted. It's nessesary.

Wiping an old workstation so I can load WHS and play with it a bit. Need to test drive replication and loss.

Reading in business cards via a Worldcard and following up with folks from an Expo we just did.

Of course tons of email.

Web stuff on my GoDaddy account. Newsletters, website editing, traffic management, etc.

I take a break to go watch some Journeyman on my X360, from a laptop running TVersity.. of course the ep's are from bittorrent.

Installed a CIS in my Epson R260 yesterday, so that was cool.

Um. And cleaning the place with the help of roombas and scoobas.

I'm not addicted at all! I can stop any time! And I'll refresh this page in five minutes to check the red line just to prove it.

article: These over-wired people are so focused on their gadgets, they neglect relationships with other people, O'Neill said. Communication aids such as texting and e-mail may actually hamper our abilities to have more important face-to-face conversations.

This may be true for people with normal neurological development (or who would exhibit that development if they weren't spending their time on the Internet instead).

However, for people with Asperger Syndrome, high-functioning autism, nonverbal learning disorders, etc., e-mail and text are often better precisely *because* the literal content of the message is what's intended. Efforts to accompany literal communication with nonverbal communication may result in the nonverbal signals getting misinterpreted (because the person doesn't really "speak the same language"), and the person receiving the communication may interpret as nonverbal signals gestures or facial movements that weren't intended as such.

In the most severe cases, the ability to learn or at least imitate nonverbal communication isn't there, so no amount of face-to-face interaction will help sufferers practice.

So for some people, online social life isn't an inferior alternative to a normal face-to-face social life -- it's a superior alternative to an awkward and unsuccessful face-to-face social life.

But yeah, even people who believe their symptoms to be that severe need to make serious efforts at IRL interaction before they write off the possibility of having a face-to-face social life. Also, they need to keep trying at regular intervals rather than doing it for a month or two and then giving up for the rest of their lives.

These anti-technology twats are addicted to boredom and self-righteousness born of insecurity. They're jealous because most of the people using the Internet are more interesting than themselves.

Or the previous one. Letters or telegrams were used for traumatic news all the time.

I tried going 5 minutes without the internet yesterday. It was painful. Worse than waterboarding, having my limbs cut off, or thinking of Rosie O'Donnell in her underwear.

You addicts! Why not do what I do and wait for the latest issue of the periodical catalog to come out so you can look up research on a given topic individually instead in one search. Also, if I cannot reach someone in person, I do not rely on this silly "technology." Instead, I send a letter. And when I collaborate on a paper with someone I always send them the hard copy and ask them to mark changes on it then to return it to me so I can retype it.

And running statistics? Give me paper and pencil any day! Nothing like a 3x3x5 MANCOVA by hand.

felidstar 2008-01-27 02:21:29 PM
I was noticing this the other day... I can quite often go without e-mail for an extended period of time... or the internet in general. But two minutes without my mp3 player pushing my audio-books into my ear-canal and I go all twitchy.

/Of course the audio-books help drown out the voices... so maybe technology-addiction isn't the WORST of my problems...

Music Nerd 2008-01-27 02:21:50 PM

Yes, I'm addicted to technology. The wheel. Lever. Sharpened sticks. Refined metals. Weights & measures. Woven cloth. Milled grain (esp. for sammiches).

Oh, do you mean "addicted" to certain forms of technology? Why not be more specific, dipshiat?

Clara Moskowitz is an idiot.
