FTA: Young people prone to drinking to intoxication and heavy episodic drinking were found to be particularly vulnerable.

And if there's anyone that'll listen to WHO recommendations, it's young people prone to drinking to intoxication.

A report presented to the executive board found that harmful drinking caused 2.3 million premature deaths worldwide each year, accounting for nearly 4 percent of global deaths.

In fairness, those are some pretty High Numbers.

"Premature death" stats tend to skew numbers something shocking. For example, it's highly likely that a huge number of those deaths were old men in Eastern Europe and Russia who died of something that was put down to an "alcohol-related illness" even though they were within a few short years of their life expectancy anyway.

"2.3 million premature deaths" sounds bad, but the number of truly tragic "young lives cut short" kind of deaths is much smaller.

It's the same as with smoking. Stats show that annual "smoking-related deaths" are in the millions, but if you filter out the 65+ year old people who died of something that might or might not have been related to their smoking, it doesn't look at farked up as when you look at the raw number.

I'm not advocating some kind of careless stance regarding smoking/drinking/other vices here. Just saying, these raw numbers need some perspective. People tend to get a "young life cut short" sort of impression when they see a "premature deaths" number, but very often it's not so much a "young life cut short" as just a normal cause of death in old age in a given society.

/Over-indulgence in calories causes FAR more "premature deaths" in the Western world than all "vices" combined twice over.

Thanks for the info. Here's some for you, courtesy of Wiki:

The Detours changed their name to "The Who" in 1964 and, with the arrival of Keith Moon that year, their line-up was complete. However, for a short period during 1964, under the management of famed mod Peter Meaden, they changed their name to The High Numbers, during which time they released "Zoot Suit/I'm The Face", a single designed to appeal to their mostly mod fans. When it failed to chart, the band fired Meaden and quickly reverted to The Who.

Maybe a Miracle Cure would be to eat more Heinz Baked Beans?

Seriously, I wish marijuana and mushrooms would be legalized (and de-demonized from employers) so I could take a legal and responsible "mind vacation" once in awhile. In the meantime, I socially drink, and go on a bender probably every other month for blessed self-medication.

What's with all of you prudes who get your panties in a wad when other people want to smoke weed and don't hurt you directly? I've come to believe a lot of super-motivated republican types realize the world might be less than super-productive, albeit happier, if the masses smoked weed freely, and as a result, they'd be less super-rich from the physical work of others. They're not happy with being regular-rich; they must strive to always want more. There's no such word as "satisfied" or "enough" to the people who don't want the masses to be happier and a little sloppier.

I'd take a life that's a little sloppier and a lot happier because I know the meaning of the word "enough."

Scott77 2008-01-27 11:07:40 AM
I probably won't be very popular on Fark (was I ever?) after this comment, but after having abused alcohol rather severely for more than 20 years I'd have to say that sobriety has its benefits.

Having quit cold turkey (no AA or any other direct help) I can say I'm happier and healthier than ever.

Some people can obviously use alcohol responsibly and function reasonably well. I'm not one of those people.
