Its a shame that he never faced trial for his crimes. Seems like most dictators get the luxury of dying in relative comfort unlike so many of their victims.

Mugabe will go the same way, I'm sure.

I tried to submit this as a limerick and got as far as realizing that Suharto kind of rhymes with Jakarta -- in other words, not very far.

So, like Pinochet, another scumbag imperialist tool gets to live a long life free from prosecution for his crimes. So disappointing. So, anyone want to take bets on whether the Bush cabal will ever face prosecution?

There once was a man from Jakarta
He was not from the city of Sparta
But if he were
I am pretty sure
He would sign the Magna Carta

Thank you Minneapolis!

He ceded power in what, 1998? Frankly, who gives a shiat about a dead crackpot dictator when he hasn't had any influence in 10 years. Seriously, 'breaking news'? Subby, come on...

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 02:29:46 AM
The great news is that he suffered quite a bit over the last while.

The true answer on how to judge him is this: "Is he someone you could have a beer with?"

Daedalus27 2008-01-27 02:38:32 AM
Subby here. The Mods gave it the breaking news classification. I catagorized it as interesting when I submitted it (I couldn't give a sad tag to someone like him) since I had the same feelings that we shouldn't abuse the newsflash tab for something of this nature. I tried to do something catchy but there is only so much you can do with Suharto and Indonesia. I worked at it for a few minutes but then just went with a relatively boring headline.

You know, you can say a lot of bad things about him, but if you were a dictator, you might step on a few flower gardens and kick a few babies yourself

Goodnight Java Man.

You bastard.

I was in Bali when their first free elections were held. It was widely rumoured that he was a sorcerer and that he was not punished because people were too afraid of his powers.

Simia Saturnalia 2008-01-27 02:52:51 AM
As I wanted to veer away from the obvious choices, I once dressed as Suharto for a dictator-themed costume party; since I learned about it an hour before going, this costume was black pants, black shirt, crappily made hat composed of cereal box colored black, and a cardboard sign I hung around my neck reading "I am an old Indonesian man".

I just wanted to share that story. Other than that, I'm glad he's dead.

wejash [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 02:56:19 AM
There once was a man
from Jakart-o,
Who went by the name
of Suharto,
When his time came
oh what a shame!
For he went without
a halo.

Best I can do on short notice. Why can't these guys die on schdule?

When the victims got rare

And he hid like Ed Debartalo

Bela Kun
Mugabe

Damn Imperialists always killing and wrecking shiat. All we really need are some good populists. They never kill common from because the ARE the common folk.

No one's quoted this yet? One of the best movies ever made -- and Mel Gibson's best, for sure. In that early film, you can actually see what a great actor he was, and could have been.

Linda Hunt was nominated for the Oscar -- can't remember whether she won it. Powerful film.

There once was a Java dictator
Who said you shall die, see you later
To thousands of folk
who disliked what he spoke
Who've now primed the suharto mutilator

He had a certain . . . je ne sais quoi.

Not the full cachet that fell to a leader like Sukarno (GIS Dewi Sukarno)

No comments about the Indonesian mystics (don't know their local name) that Suharto believed in/consulted with have an explanation for why he died after the spirit world not being ready to take him for the last month?

He's not dead, there must be a higher power
He finally died, there must be a higher power

Anyone know the story about the East Timorese "forgiving" Suharto before his death?
