Good one, subby.

scruffy1 [TotalFark] 2008-01-26 10:12:19 PM
To be perfectly honest I would rather have them picket and protest the funeral of a celebrity than that of a fallen soldier/law enforcement/ etc. It keeps their chances of getting the crap beaten out of them to a minimum which means they have less people to attempt to sue. That is not that I wouldn't mind some harm to befall them but not at the cost of litigation.

Yes, but some wonderful soul got to THIS before Phelps did.

I think old Freddy has jumped the shark. When he bails out on his "values" to pimp himself in Hollywood, it's a good sign his radar blip is starting to fade.

//God hates Fred Phelps
///That's why he's not dead, God doesn't want him either.

HIS funeral will have to be secret, otherwise it'll be one heck of a party.

Suicidal Writer 2008-01-26 11:43:44 PM
People are so simple minded, and I'm not talking about the Phelps cult. I'm talking about people who physically assault them. They don't quite understand the "free" part of free expression. It's disgusting and something is wrong with anyone who lets the odious opinions of people that they are not close to affect them.

Three of Phelp's evil coven did show up, but were confronted by Freepers and Patriot Guard Riders and fled.

Yeah, well, if a family member of mine died in Iraq and I had to put up with that while we buried our loved one...I could see going ballistic on them.

It's tasteless and un-Christian. There's going to be a special, gay-filled firey corner of hell for them. I'm sure Satan is already making the plans.

Freedom of expression is not a ticket to say whatever the fark you want whenever the fark you want. There are limits to 1A.

Some people call him the Space Cowboy, some call him the Gangster of Love, some people call him Heath Ledger, cause he spoke of the pompousness of Christian Professional Protesters.

vonspringer 2008-01-26 11:50:16 PM
This is good. He can't compound the grief of a dead soldier's family if he's not there. And he can't do much damage at the SAG awards anyway.

I'm hoping the old bat will take Jesus seriously and learn to not be a hateful loon. There's probably not much hope, but then lots of his family has ended up rejecting his views.

I'm still rolling on the floor with laughter that Shirley Phelps was exposed as a hypocrite for having a child out of wedlock.

In Louis Theriox's documentary he asked Shirley why she hated gay people so much and her explanation was that it is because so many gay men are married and having gay sex on the side which is the sin of adultery.

Good on ya Shirley! Way to keep those family values going strong. Anybody that meets her from now on can call her an adulterer since she meet the definition by her own stadards.

She's had 11 kids. I don't know if that includes the one that won't talk to her anymore or the one she had out of wedlock but that is some kind of breeding program they got there.

And yes, when Fred Phelps dies I will be the first in line to celebrate with my stereo blasting Village People music. :) Say that's a good idea, we should organize a Fark party at the Phelps home in Kansas and play the gayest music we can get our hands on nice and loud for them to enjoy.

Maybe farkers should get some common sense and stop submitting their stupid stories to Fark and get the rest of the media to follow suit. Without attention they will only be whores and will fade the insignificant nothingness they belong in.

The first amendment, and personal responsibility go hand in hand.

You have the right to say anything you wish...BUT..you have to be willing to accept the consequences, good or bad, that goes along with exercising that right.

freedom of speech, does not equate freedom to do or say what you want without reprisals, it only means you are free to express yourself, then you have to deal with how others choose to express themselves in response to your actions.

Cause and effect, every action has an equal and opposite reaction..even nature follows those rules, some people are just too stupid to understand it and think themselves to be special and above all others.

jonthenewt 2008-01-27 12:08:54 AM
You know, in a lot of ways, Fred Phelps is good for the country. The people who are kinda weary of gay people because of their upbringing, religious beliefs, or whatever see Phelps and have to say that guy is just evil...

He unites people against his way of thinking, and I gotta say, that's a good thing.

Still, since I live in Kansas, I've thought of how awesome it would be to go to Topeka, where he's at (only a 20 min drive), and toss a few live grenades into their church service. Take em all out at once

But that'd make him a martyr for the people who think like him, so that's probably why I don't do it...Plus, I don't like murdering people unless they cut in front of me at the supermarket checkout

I think that hopefully the answer for this is that people are finally wising up to his scam. The guy really doesn't believe his hate speech as much as he's hoping you'll pop him in the mouth so he can sue you.

His god isn't the gay hating, America loathing, letting soliders burn in hell one he likes to preach about. His god is the almighty dollar.

He's no different than any other con man. Only slightly more loud.

Yeah, it's a good idea to stay silent and not day speak against the opinions of others.

If you're a spineless person, who has so little faith in his own opinions and beliefs that he cannot possible defend them.

SuperDuper28 2008-01-27 12:19:25 AM
Well, Freedom of Speech doesn't have an asterisk that exludes these people. Of course it's bad taste but you don't get the choice to silence unpopular speech. Even though they are clearly a group of rude extremists abusing it in this situation it's still protected.

If you really want to cheese the WBC and piss them off, don't do anything when he dies. Absolutely nothing.

Refuse to acknowledge it in any way which will give them an ounce of publicity. Stay away in droves. The family is a group of attention-starved Media Whores the likes of which Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan should worship and study for future reference. Ignore them. Ignore the funeral. Ignore them completely, as if they were invisible.

Treating them as pariahs to be hated and challenged serves to feed their martyr complex and feeds their coffers from filing assault lawsuits. If nobody, and I mean nobody, gave them so much as a sideways glance whenever they saw them, they would wither and die in a matter of months.

They don't quite understand the "free" part of free expression.

You are wrong. They understand it very well. Freedom of speech as it was understood by our Founding Fathers simply meant that the government could not impose prior restraint on speech, which in those agrarian days meant pretty much meant the opinions of newspaper writers and pamphleteers. The United States is unique in this freedom.

Many people have somehow distorted this concept to mean that any asshat can say any thing at any time in any place without consequence and we have to let him. Errant nonsense. We are stopped daily from complete free expression by a myriad of laws, customs, rules and regulations imposed upon us by employers, schools, social mores and even the government. Even this forum has its own rules as anyone who has tried to post the word shiat without the "a" can tell you. All speech has consequences.

Phelps and his ilk take the chance that their speech might be so inflammatory that it might incite violence against them. Those committing the violence might be wrong. That's another issue, completely unrelated to free speech. Indeed, the only 1st Amendment issue here is whether or not the government imposes prior restraint on Phelps. I've not seen any evidence whatsoever of such restraint.

My personal opinion is that the vigorous kicking of Fred Phelps old white ass is a consummation devoutly to be wished.

"Free speech"?

Please.

You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater (unless there is a fire).

And you can't protest some innocent person's funeral and not risk getting the crap beat out of you -- in both cases your "free speech" will be legitimately overruled by A) the law, in the first instance, and B) an angry mob in the second instance - a mob that will probably escape successful prosecution.

If you do something to somebody else that is so incredibly offensive that a violent reaction from them becomes legally defensible, you've crossed the boundaries of "free speech."

Yelling fire in a crowded theater is not an opinion. Terrible analogy. It's more getting the crap beat out of you for saying homosexuality isn't a sin.

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me it isn't protected. "Freedom of Speech" means only that you get to say what's on your mind. It doesn't mean you have the right to impose your views forcefully upon people who don't want to hear them.
