I'll bet they get quite the crowd for "Ladies' Night".

"Sometimes a bar is a place where people go when they're down," she said.

Ric would be so proud.

The Market Cross pub in Carlisle.

I'm strangely not surprised.

I guess they're trying to reconnect with us Irish folks.

They have some decent house brews and their burgers are great.

I thought the bar was where all non-Catholics went for confession.

The Grinch 2008-01-27 12:44:29 AM
It calls to mind that scene from 'The Simpsons Movie', where, upon imminent disaster, the churchgoers run next door to the bar, and the bar drunks run into the church. An apt depiction, I think.

I have always wondered why there was such an effort to create a 'truth drug'. Just get 'em drunk.

Oh good. the vicar won't be coming up to you and groping you. Just a ear to talk too.

/Keep out of the soup kitchen cause the preachers , for some reason, keep preaching to people who would rather eat than poke out their ear drums and eat than listen to the bible crud..

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2008-01-27 12:48:56 AM
if you make a confession while drunk does it still count?

A proper Irish Catholic makes time for both drinking and church.

/ So I put a button in th' plate
// An' spewed up in th' church

This is a win. Too many times I've run into people at bars drunk off their gourds, and thinking I'm some kind of confessional booth to spill all their problems on. I like that there will be someone designated for this role.

/Doesn't do bars anymore
//I'm a lush magnet
///Why does everyone think I'm a good person to tell about all their problems?

In NYC, I used to go to a place called the North Star Pub, down at the South Street Seaport. There was a guy who used to go there called "Father Mack". He was the drinkingest Irish Catholic priest I ever saw, always smoked a big briar pipe, and was a hell of a nice guy. On Boxing Day, he'd lay out the altar trappings on the bar, and invite anyone in who wanted to partake in Mass in the pub before the festivities began.

Man, I miss that place.

But that means we have to go back to the bar from the hotel.

If God had wanted us to go to churches, they would have stripper poles and infinity pools with swim-up bars.

Hmm, not so useful for me. Almost all my sins are committed shortly after LEAVING a bar.

Good idea even if it's just for the therapeutic purposes, just as long as they wait for someone to come to them rather than seeking someone out.

Sounds like a good cover to let the "chaplains" hang out in the bars.

The Market Cross is awesome. I used to be a regular there when I lived in Carlisle. Very cool place. My old minister used to play bagpipes there on open mic night.

I'd say that in my perfect world, most churches would be torn down as architectural blight, and those that remain would be mostly art museums and put to other useful purposes...

Eh. I came in to say something about "in vino veritas...

/guess I have now

Since one would have to be incredibly stupid and/or shiatfaced to believe in the zombie cult's cause, I'm not very surprised.

Well, given that the central ritual of the Christian church had its origins in a drunken party, I don't see what's so odd about this. Substitute beer & pretzels for the wine & wafers and you're there.

What a delightful masterpiece of a photograph entitled "Draft beer being drawn into glass, June 12, 1998."

I don't think I would have recognized it otherwise.
