From TFA: "The frightened teenagers had their clothes, including their underwear, removed and were issued with a uniform of T-shirt and jeans before being spilt up and given a medical examination."

I hate it when I get spilt up. Pour things. This thread, by the way, is useless without pitchers.

williamzabka 2008-01-26 02:08:59 PM
Huh. Not even sure what to say about this story. Pretty scary and another reason why I am not having kids anytime soon. I would've killed someone had this happened to me.

Ash 2008-01-26 02:10:07 PM
Oh I see how this works. I go to an orphanage and strip naked, and all of a sudden it's a bad thing. Other people go, and the orphanage goes to great lengths to strip them. Yeah that's real fair.

That is the most farked up story I've ever read. She should sue everyone she possibly can think of. She should call the media and create the biggest outcry possible. Get people fired, ruin lives. May God damn the immortal souls of everyone involved in that debacle.

I guess that's what happens when you leave the "nanny state" for a trip to the "abusive, overprotective, paranoid father state".

Ayandia 2008-01-26 02:12:30 PM
This probably happens to American children every day but doesn't make the news because their parents are dead or unable to help. These child services people are supposed to be helping kids in need. Sounds more like the department of making things worse. I'm sick and tired of hearing about children being taken from loving families on false and stupid accusations to be fostered by people who abuse them.

I'm in NY...which building do I stand in front of to protest this crap?

tigermouth 2008-01-26 02:15:26 PM
What it sounds like is that they were put in the system and the people at child services did a standard intake. Maybe asked them a questionnaire (have you ever been abused, have you ever been raped, etc) to put in a file. Mother even mentioned the investigation letter she got seemed like a form letter.

So, it sounds bad, but it's probably just standard procedure (stupid procedure, but hey).

PinkFuzzyBunny 2008-01-26 02:16:12 PM
Why am I not surprised. We have become such a litigious and bureaucratic society that any organization that deals with children has to just assume they are being abused or molested...and yet treat them without a spec of dignity or trust.

If that's standard, I wouldn't want to see exceptional.

FTA: They had to shower in front of strangers. What they went through would be a breach of anyone's human rights, let alone two girls on holiday.

So two girls on holiday have more human rights than others?

Not that I would expect this from the Fark community, but stop and think about this logically and it all makes sense. Mom get pneumonia, which is potentially serious and means she will probably be hospitalized for several days at a minimum. Her two minor children have no where to stay, no food, etc. The hospital can't just abandon them, so they do the only thing they can and turn them over to the state. They weren't 'stripped' as the subby implied but were given a uniform to wear and allowed to change in private. Yea, they had to use public showers as that's all that was available in the orphanage.

It's a shiatty way to spend a vacation I agree, but I don't see any other alternative the hospital could have taken. They couldn't just let the kids wander the streets of New York.

EKU Colonel 2008-01-26 02:19:31 PM

As said by others, this is probably standard treatment for kids in the system, just they usually don't have any means to protest it. Everyone "knows" the foster system is awful here, but unless some outgoing kid gets adopted by rich parents, there's no much that can usually be done.

This is a golden opportunity! Someone with legal experience or lots of money should seize upon it and try to remedy this -- offer help to this parents and teens, and from there help hundreds if not thousands of others. I'd do it myself if I could.

The US is pretty much a third world tinpot dictatorship pretending to be a first world democracy that gives a damn about human rights.

Shaggy_C 2008-01-26 02:23:58 PM
czarangelus: Jesus f'ing Christ, it's starting to sound like Schindler's List over here.

Not quite; Liberals have argued for this kind of proper documentation for years to protect children from abuse. I imagine most kids coming into 'the system' are victims and this way they can compare bruises/scars/etc from one intake to another in the case that the state takes the kids from their parents. I only hope that they had female workers doing this; otherwise we've got major problems.

For those of you implying that rules are rules, would you agree that whoever took pictures should be charged with making child pr0n?

Exactly. They're both old enough to stay in a hotel room by themselves, and I'm sure some arrangements (regarding payment, food, etc.) could have been made.

This story is completely farked up (obviously). The mom just had pneumonia, so why the fark did they put the girls in an orphanage as if she'd already kicked it?

$1400 to my name, -198 after rent and credit card. Plus I'm only 22 so adopting a 15 year old kid might be...umm...a little questionable. It's like buying a future girlfriend for when she hits the right age. But yes, I'm with you in spirit.

Again...they were on "holiday", i.e. wouldn't they have book a place to stay??? These folks seem pretty well off (especially with the pound being at around $2). Couldn't they just get a person to come hang out with them at the hotel room instead of dropping them off at the O-hole?

Well, yeah. But which is worse; that only these two children got this treatment, or that every child who enters the system gets this treatment? Jesus Christ, can you imagine taking a kid whose parents just died, separating her from her siblings, making her strip naked and shower in front of a stranger and then sitting her down and asking her if her dad ever fiddled with her naughty bits?

But at the same time the social worker promised to find a foster family to take the girls in. There's no mention of wether or not social services even processed them for a family. Also, if there was no suspicion of abuse when they were turned over, why did they have to be processed in this manner to begin w/?

Sounds pretty coherent to me.
