I have a relative who is going to be 18 in a few months. He started Ritalin at about age 5. He's been in trouble all his life and he's currently serving 6 months in juvenile lock up. This kid is already marked, one incident, I pulled a sawed off shotgun from under his dresser when he got in trouble. He doesn't have much of a chance at life.

/I hate drugging children for behavioral reasons.

I'll bet these numbers would drop if it was actually prescribed to kids who really do need it. Sad that too many parents and teachers want to shove pills down little Billy's throat to make him stop being a kid.

It's not psychiatrists, it's the idiots who go running to the shrink because Johnny isn't in the top 1% in everything, and engages in *gasp*horseplay and roughhousing*gasp* which interrupts precious TV time.

Dr Lucire suggested her controversial stance on the links between the antidepressant drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and suicide meant some in the psychiatric fraternity questioned her ability.

It's both. But parents are typically idiots regarding how well their idealized image of what their kid should be matches up to the reality of how their kid is. Psychiatrists spend years and years in college and med school and such, and should act like goddamn educated professionals.

Exactly this. When I was with my son on an overnight to Kottsberry farm with cubscouts, years ago, one mom lamented she did not bring enough Ritalin. Of the six other parents I was sitting with, I was the only one to not respond "you should have let me know you needed it. I have plenty."

I doubt it, seeing as true ADD/ADHD results in being unable to focus on anything. If a kid can't stay still in class for 5 minutes, but can play baseball or video games just fine, then it's not a disorder, it's just sheer boredom.

Psychoactive medication is a VERY popular first-course-of-treatment in Aussie schools. I had a friend from Sydney who moved to the states, so his daughter could go to a school without being force-fed the ADD meds. She tested out "just fine" here and acclimated to public school, and went on to college.

AFAIC, Ritalin is the new snake oil. Its effects are all up here *taps head* - if you think it's going to help you study, you're going to try harder after you take it. Hey, my grades are improving. Ritalin rocks!

Took it for 9 months and I was skeptical the whole time. Consequently, it didn't do shiat. Was switched to Dexamphetamine - same (lack of) result.

They might as well release it in roll-on form and run advertisements telling you to "apply directly to the forehead".

How do you psychoanalyze a shrink? Think about it. She knows what's going to happen when they check her, what each question means, and if she was delusional in her attacks on the use if Ratalin, she can hide it perfectly.

She and the investigating shrink should just compare resumes' and the fatter one wins.

Video games = hyperfocusing and high level of stimulation; people with ADHD are going to be more likely to play video games

Illegal drugs = not relevant

Hot chicks = you are wrong; one of the major symptoms of ADHD is difficulty in interpersonal relationships

But that's not what the article is indicating is going on. The board who has certified this professional has ordered her to consult with a senior board member about her diagnoses. I don't know if she's a critical thinker who flaunts established medical dogmna, or a crackpot whoring herself to lawyers who's willing to say some shmuck isn't responsible for his actions because of "residual organic hallucinosis."

But nothing in the article seems to suggest she's being ordered to "treatment in a mental hospital." I think subby's headline tricked you.

Admittedly, pot doesn't take a lot of focus.

I was on Ritalin starting at.. 7 I think. Up until 17, when the paranoia finally set in fully. I've got a pretty unadictive ans easy going personality so it made me nuts but I didn't get in any major trouble. I don't think the attempted assault or however it's classified even got put on my record. This was back in the 90's where they didn't label you a terrorist for anything short of actual terrorism. It still made me pretty nutty and freaking annoying though. It's not hard to imagine what this would do it a kid without attentive parents.

Except for the ritalin I have great parents who raised me right. They were just convinced by a number of therapists that I actually had ADHD. Maybe I do, or I did, but ritalin's nasty stuff even if you have got it. If this shrink ends up anywhere requiring bail money I'll put forth some.

Because they hyperfocus. There is enough stimulation. Hyperfocusing (or intense focusing on high stimulating "stuff") is a symptom of ADHD.

Exactly my point. I was really just shiatting out my own anecdotal $.02, but I've seen a lot of professionally diagnosed ADHD people, and like I said, no problems concentrating when it came to something they wanted to do.

But that isn't even what I said in reply to you. Hyperfocusing IS a symptom of the disorder. And you are wrong about the relationship (hot girls) part. More stimulation means lower symptoms. That doesn't mean the disorder is "fake," and actually demonstrates a strong predictive symptom.

They take whatever comes up most often in the scans and say "this is a sign". Who's gonna know? I just got a bunch of ink blot tests and some sessions with a psychiatrist. People tend to do what the doctor says and not question it very much, educated or otherwise, unless they're suspicious by nature.

Although, some kids that really do need Ritalin might just be expressing at a young age soon-to-be-discovered disorders that would have shown up anyway. Lots of mental issues manifest as "spazzy kids", when the child is young, right?

My little sis was put on Paxil at age eight. She's weened off it now. Do I think we did right to put her on such a "dangerous med" for a kid? Damn straight, I do. You should have seen her. She's still not quite a normal girl now, but at least she's stopped being so scary.

On the other hand, my stepbrothers (related to her) turned out to be a bipolar schizophrenic and a drug-using convict (who has severe ADD/HD issues and some other mental issues, diagnosed far too late). Little sis's dad had some seriously bad genes.

I'm not even sure what I'm saying here, other than: All meds for kids aren't bad, which a lot of you are claiming. And kids on meds might be having problems BECAUSE they need medication, not because OF the medication. Without a lot more study, you just can't know.

Weaver95: If you disagree with the diagonosis, do the math yourself and prove (or disprove) the point. We do NOT get to lock people up in loony bins just because we happen to disagree with them!

Well, here's the thing:

1) She's taking money to testify.
2) Her testimony is controversial and she is unable to prove her diagnosis due to a non-disclosure agreement.
3) She's not being locked up, she's been ordered to see a psychiatrist. She can still practice and is otherwise unrestricted.

She's probably been ordered to a psychiatrist because of the doctor-patient confidentiality protection. She can break the former non-disclosure agreement in session without anyone knowing.

Sounds to me like the board is concerned that she's corrupt and wants to investigate.

Wow. Just wow.

There are clear differences in those with ADHD and those without from behavior, to scores on IQ tests, to scores on the AMEN, to PET scan and CT scan results, and more. Is ADHD overdiagnosed? Probably. People also sometimes "treat" colds with antibiotics; that doesn't mean a cold doesn't exist.

And ink blot? Really? Scary.
