How ironic. A little missing white girl on Oprah fetches a couple million. I wonder how much Springer would have paid for the "rights" for a missing little black girl's story... probably $100 if the mom was either hot, or a crack whore.

The couple will appear on the show which can best help to search for Madeleine, he insisted.

The little girl is in the US now? How'd she make it here from Portugal?

Woot! 2 post down and the race card is played!! *grabs popcorn*

This is.... unless they intend to directly fund the search for their daughter (or other lost children) using this money, this is near criminal in my book. It just looks darn greedy.

Very sad that people trying to find a missing loved one would be such an interesting story that millions of dollars would be paid to hear it and, that for this, we would find fault with the parents.

Of course I'm assuming there will be insults hurtled at the parents later in this thread, but I've taken a peek or two into similar threads before, so I'm thinking it's pretty likely

Come on man, they did it.

I'm sure Tom Petty did not abduct their child for an international child sex ring while they were eating salt cod 50 yards away.

I don't get why it's worth 2.2 million dollars. The parents have become their own dead child industry. People will now be building business models requiring a cute white kid and an abduction.

They have something that our whorish media and moranic audience considers valuable to the tune of $2M. Why shouldn't they get that money? How does it in any way reflect on their love of their daughter? If someone collects on life insurance, is that near criminal?

I DRTFA but, I thought Oprah said she didn't pay guests to appear on her show- that's how she lost out on the Lewinsky interview back in the day.

These people are weird, I don't have kids, but if I did, I think I'd be catatonic knowing my kid is out there somewhere. The aloofness of these parents lends one toward thinking they know what happened to their child; to go about life capitalizing on their alleged grief is sick.

The McCanns, both 39, say they have been forced to consider the bids because their £1.2million Find Madeleine appeal fund is expected to run dry by June.

How could they have burned through 2.5M U.S. already in addition to the Vanity Fair deal which was supposedly a few hundred thousand??!?! Now another two million will have to last until the movie deal is final.

I'm going to have a kid, wait until she's two and all sorts of girly cute, then throw her off a cliff and make millions. Finally! A plan. And it's a good one!

It's the Natalee Holloway of the UK crossed with Jon Benet. Grabbed headlines because that part of Portugal is pretty much just upper middle clash Englishpeople who are scared of the local Portugese. They claimed their kid got abducted from a villa while they were eating dinner just around the corner. They just released a sketch where the alleged abducter looks like Tom Petty:

I feel sorry for the little girl - who is almost certainly dead, but have no sympathy for the parents. The fact that this has become a media circus when many other children have disappeared without this much attention sickens me. Aside from printing a few posters and the odd "Find Maddie" T-shirt, how exactly could their funds have dried up so quickly? What have they been spending money on? What the hell are the expenses?

Those who say they need the cash to help find the kid are wrong. The constant news coverage has generated more publicity than money can buy. I'm looking at you gutter rags.

/Also, why is this really crap sketch of a typical creepy guy only surfacing now? He's just a possible suspect, but the media are writing stupid headlines like:
IS THIS MADDIES KILLER?!!?!?!?!?1111one!!

ClubbingSeals 2008-01-26 03:40:04 PM
Whether they did it or not everyone thinks they did so why not take the money. It's a no brainer when you have nothing to lose.

If Oprah offered me that kind of money I'd be sure to negotiate the deal so that she also had to pay the taxes on the gift to me.

/obscure reference?

My theory is this:

They're both doctors. They decided to give their kids a small dose of sleeping pills before they went out to dinner. Unfortunately they overdid it, and one of the kids dies. They come back, find the body and panic. They'll probably get a fairly lenient prison sentence, but their medical careers are certainly over. The decide to cover it up, so they dispose of the body and play respectable, middle-class, church-going, upstanding members of society card.

MrsIrB 2008-01-26 04:03:13 PM
When my son was two, I wouldn't leave him alone for more than a few minutes. He always played within sight and sound of me. I cannot fathom the idea of leaving him alone in a hotel room. When we vacationed with him, at that age, we got carry-out and ate back on the hotel balcony, or ate out somewhere that was kid friendly. Them's the breaks when you have a kid. Sorry.

All I can say is that they never should have left the child with George Harrison in the first place.

What kind of farked up parents leave little children alone in a hotel room? They should be charged with something. My niece is 5 right now and there are 2-3 nights a week in which she wakes up to use the bathroom, is scared, or something else. I read reports in which the parents gave the kids some type of sleeping drug to keep them asleep? Ugh. Charge the parents with something and get them out of the news.

Why is this still even considered newsworthy?

I personally don't want to see another pointless, "we failed to make any progress" headline. If they find the kid, THEN run that story and be done with it.

Bacontastesgood 2008-01-26 05:30:16 PM
Yes, the parents suck for leaving them alone, but I don't believe all of the "oh, they killed her" jazz. The portugese officials have been stinking up the place with their bullshiat since this story broke. They realized early on there was probably no way they were going to find whomever grabbed her, and statistically speaking she was never going to be found, so they decided to nail the parents to preserve the tourist industry.

Family members who are guilty of crimes like this usually don't want the spotlight. They are always told that the more media coverage the better to help find their kid, but people can only fake so much.

FarkinNortherner [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-01-26 05:47:56 PM
Bacontastesgood: The portugese officials have been stinking up the place with their bullshiat since this story broke.

They declared Murat an arguido on May 15th. They didn't name Gerry McCann until September 8th. If you're going to preserve the tourist industry, propagating a story of a predatory paedophile, throughout spring and summer months, is a funny way of doing it.
