(The Whig) Sappy Soldier deployed to Afghanistan rents ice so he can play hockey with his 4-year-old for first time the day before he goes. When his unit is sent early, the arena cancels all other rentals so the two can have the ice to themselves   (thewhig.com) divider line 103

A friend of mine plays in a hockey league that lost a whole team because most of the guys on it got shipped to Afghanistan.

My husband is on an aircraft carrier for a month training and testing something for the Navy. I have no idea how these families put up with being apart for a year or more at a time. It's really sad that after a week our son won't even talk to him on the phone anymore. Both older kids are pissed at Dad for missing stuff at school or things they wanted to talk to him about.

I really don't think I could handle having a family with someone I knew wasn't going to be around to help much if at all. Nice story though.

Having raised a military family during my 20 year career I'm getting a kick out of your reply.

Since I live in Kingston, and both of my parents are military, with my dad going to Afghanistan a couple of years ago, this story really touches the heart!

It's nice to someone do the right thing for a change.

In related news, I'm going skating with my kids in about 2 hours.
Only, I'm not going to war afterward. As far as I know.

I hope he didn't check her too hard into the boards. Not to be a total ass, but when I took my daughter to the rink for the first time to play she kept saying things like, "I don't want to go play hokey (how she pronounces it)," and crying. I didn't strap skates on her as she hadn't been on ice before. She hated the whole experience. I did not RTFA, I don't know if this girl liked it or not, just sayin' it might be as great as the headline implies.

I think maybe I will get her into floor hockey in our basement to start her out. Or maybe I could stop trying to get my daughter to like the things I like. She would be a much cooler daughter if she enjoyed watching sports and fetching me beer though.

Sure, it's only a couple of dollars to the rich gringos up north. Here, south of the border, that's real money!

The husband is actually just some guy she saw on the docks and she's actually the ghost of the woman that designed the device for the navy and died along with the rest of the ship when it malfunctioned?

My hat comes off to the rink owner. That showed class and heart, in a world where that is in short supply.

There are plenty of men not being deployed who will "fill in" until they come home. Lived on many military bases. Don't think it ain't happening.

Why is this guy and his kid more deserving of alone time on the ice than joe schmoe's birthday party, for instance?

Didn't you get the memo? The military is ALWAYS the most honorable profession, and therefore bending/breaking rules for them is commendable.

I'm gonna get flamed, as I always do for this, but crap people. It's a job. Get over yourselves. You're not better than my local cop, fireman, or hell, construction worker.

I'd sue the damned arena for breach of contract.

You think? You keep treating your daughter like the son you wish you had and she'll hate your farking guts when she grows up, and pass that hatred onto other men. You're ruining a good lay for a whole new generation!

The picture from the story states that Sue Smith is on the right. The photo shows a soldier with a guitar case. Either Sue Smith is a guitar or that soldier is trying to smubble a woman to Afghanistan.

Alright, for one thing.... Cop or fireman: you do an honourable job of serving your community, and put your life on the line every day at your work. Construction can be dangerous too. However, when you choose one of those professions, you do so knowing you will NOT be called upon to spend a year and a half of your life, at a time, in some distant and foreign country where the locals have nothing but contempt for you. Even a New Orleans cop goes home to his wife and kids every day after patrolling the streets. Soldiers often don't get that chance.

Soldiers are constantly being separated from their families, and often, don't come back home. They give their lives valiantly for their country every day. I'm not gonna debate the politics of the current wars, but the soldiers, regardless of their views, will go where their country tells them to go. When somebody has the chance to show some sort of appreciation for the work they do, they do it wholeheartedly. Especially in this area.

In a small tight-nit community like Gananoque, located a couple of kilometres away from CFB Kingston, the members of the town value highly the numerous military personnel who choose to live there, and contribute to the well being of the town. I'm sure that nobody was complaining that their hockey practice was an hour and a half late to accommodate a brave man who will be separated from his family for 9 months, and giving him the opportunity to take his son to play hockey for the first time in his short life.

So if you are complaining about the fairness of this, join the army... See how many firemen, police officers, and construction workers support you and are willing to buy you a coffee when you get home from a year in a foreign country......if you get home They'd be lining up to support the soldiers.......

Jebusfreak:
I'm frankly a little humbled you didn't bring the flames, you're quite a nice guy. Or girl.

I'm not familiar with the region, being from the US and not Canada.

I think part (though not all) of my displeasure at stuff like this is because of my current political views on the wars. I disagree that we need to be in most of the places a good deal of our soldiers (at least here in the US) are being deployed. But you're right, I should put politics aside, and I will.

So that leaves me with my other qualm, which is that they accepted the job, with all its benefits and risks, so why are they entitled to special credit? Discounts on lots of things I and most others pay full price for, special recognition at events (this annoys me most at hockey, until you score a goal, sit down, I didn't come to see propaganda), and the like? I'm sure they didn't entertain beliefs that they'd be getting paid to dress up in a funny hat and practice shooting guns and driving tanks not thinking they'd be sent somewhere dangerous eventually.

I guess no matter how much I try to separate my political beliefs from the soldier, I just can't do it. I guess my belief is, if you didn't buy into the political stuff, you wouldn't put your life on your line fighting for a war you didn't believe in.

Maybe it's my flaw, I might just be wrong about this, you've made me really think about it. Thank you for that.

So, you're from Canada, eh? Do you play....hockey?

Unfortunately, one of the rentals was a kid with cancer whose one wish was to get to ice skate just once. She died before she got that chance.
