God do i hate this farking idea. I won't lie; I will be as happy to see this hand out...and that is what this is, a large handout...as much as the next guy, but there are many other things that could stimulate the economy. Like building something, for instance and, you know, giving people jobs and such. A universal health care system would employ a bunch of people, too.

Oh well. At least I'll get my PS3. Go, America...the country that forgot how to think bigger.

GODDAMN, these f*cking bastards in Washington DC.

I'm not a "consumer". I'm a f*cking citizen, not a baby that needs its pacifier, you assholes.

My grandparents are spinning in their graves right about now, right alongside George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.

Bonzo_1116 2008-01-26 02:48:49 AM
For f*ck's sake, this would even make Ronald Reagan sick.

slobarnuts 2008-01-26 02:51:21 AM
I am going to do with this money what I have done with all excess money I have ever gained.

High interest CDs and other interest yielding investments.

Yea, I dont think this is going to work as they foresee it will. I can see some people using it to pay debts, but not really buying anything new.

log_jammin [TotalFark] 2008-01-26 02:52:52 AM
I'm going to use mine to buy a handgun.

That way when SCOTUS says handgun bans are OK I'll be grandfathered in on their dime.

unless it gets "stolen"....

SingletonFactory [TotalFark] 2008-01-26 03:25:34 AM
I was against this particular handout before I even found out that I would not be eligible (since I apparently make too much money and pay too much in taxes to get any sort of a tax rebate, even though people who don't pay any taxes are eligible for a rebate), and now I am even more against it.

Too rich for the Democrats to care about me, too poor for the Republicans to care.

/Not bitter
//Okay, bitter

This isn't free money, it's just going to drop your tax refund by the same amount.

Frank N Stein 2008-01-26 04:13:39 AM
I'm planning on putting that money in my savings account.

Does that mean that I hate America?

Seriously, libs, we live in a world of 'Consumers' and 'Producers'. Guess what - the evil corporations and ultra-rich are what we call 'producers' in politically correct terms. That means the people who are not business owners or rich are 'consumers'.

Seriously though, you should be jumping for joy at this plan as it screws over Peter to pay Paul.

You'll get over it.

That's ok, in the grand scheme of things, it's only $300-1600 "free money". This free money isn't being spent on anything that can possibly return the investment. At least some of the Keynesian people realized that giving people money for nothing is stupid.

I'm assuming that this was directed at me.

I'll take a whack at this one.

Consumption, in and of itself, isn't a bad thing. It makes the economy go. What's bad is the constant American mindset of more-bigger-faster-now consumption, consuming beyond your means, equating wants with needs, and equating stuff with happiness and success. Our culture lauds these character flaws as virtues, all in the name of convincing you to buy shiat that you don't need. "Consuming" the base definition gets tainted by "consuming" the modern paradigm.

Occam's Chainsaw: equating wants with needs

eg, socialized medicine

And as I side note, I've found Europe (generally) to be more vain than the United States. The economic structuring only causes the average person to covet posh appearance because it is that much harder to achieve.

We're not doing this dance again. I say proper health care is a societal need, you say it's a want, allemande left...

Sorry to drag this out, but I say it's a want based on the fact that it wasn't ever a want or a "need" until recently, while fundamental rights exist through time.

Perhaps 500 years from now we will all be Übermensch and disease/war/premature death will be a thing of the past. All societal woes will be gone, but the world will be in demand for a regular supply of entertainment because everything else is so risk free and stable.

The 50" plasma screen will be the "societal need" of the future.

Fart_Machine 2008-01-26 05:29:23 AM
Ah so we spend, spend, spend more borrowed money which we'll have to pay back eventually at a higher cost due to interest. Or the Fed prints more money which will devalue the dollar even more.

Hey kids, recession is a natural part of the economy. Tinkering with it by spending money we don't have will only make it worse in the long run.

Why not cut the payroll tax? Super cereal. That way, those who MAKE MONEY, won't get taxed as much. Which means the government won't have to print a bunch of checks (who knows how much that costs). it's on par with getting a direct deposit.

Is there a Farkgossip page somewhere, where you have threads all about yourselves and this and that and what it's like to sit in a big imagined golden digital thrown? What is it going on here with you guys and your bullshiatting huh? Why also you are talking about "Tetsuma" and how ron paul is a good candidate? He wants to protect every one of you from the government's helpful hintings, while trying to keep less of your money, and he wants, best part this is, he wants to end america invading other countries on weak pretenses!
And you see how small he looks too at the podium and its very funny it is to see this mousey-faced man talking crazy at the debates and everyone you see kind of laugh at his words, even while he is talking.

Couple things. If it's capped at $1200 how is the woman in the first couple paragraphs suppose to be getting $1500?

Second, why is it that Bush created these tax cuts that he's wanted to make permanent that probably has put us WAY in debt and that's good, but congress passes a "one time" tax stimulus package and that's the worst thing ever.

I'm all for a progressive tax cut focused on the economically-stagnant middle class, but that doesn't provide the short-term bump in consumer purchases that they're looking to create with this stimulus.

I plan to donate my rebate to a certain "longshot" candidate. I may use my credit card to float it.

This entire country is full of mindless PACMANs running around consuming every shiny little pellet in front of them. Mindless consumption is all most people even know about life. And when you have no more money left to use to consume? Borrow on credit cards and spend that! And when your credit is maxxed out? Take out the equity in your home and spend that! And when that's all gone and foreclosure and bankruptcy is imminent? Beg the government for a handout and spend that!

Filthy consumers. Why is it that giving money to already rich people/corporations in exchange for plastic trinkets is seen as the highest achievement in your life?
