I heard Al Sharpton was offered AG spot.

Is he qualified as a trial lawyer? I thought that job most often went to prosecutors.

That would piss off enough corporations to make me very happy.

And I heard all the republican candidates eat babies.

Hahahahahaha! Hilarious, dude!

Recent precedent says it goes to sycophants, qualified or not.
And if the senate doesn't approve them, you just attack "interim" to their title and let them do the job anyway.

Appointee job going to someone qualified to do the job.
Hilarious!

.
.

/Even if qualifications mattered, Edwards did a period as a trial lawyer. Still, funny...

Obama's socialized medicine and Edward's suing every doctor in sight.

Yeah, that'll be interesting.

Uh...Wouldn't Edwards be better as the Secretary of HHS?

Heh. Canadians driving through to Mexico to get medical care. I was wondering what would be on the southbound side of that NAFTA Superhighway besides empty trucks.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-01-25 05:55:28 PM
I floated this exact idea a while back on the Penny Arcade boards. This in my opinion is the perfect move for Obama to make. It's a cronyism-type move, yes, but this is a race for the Presidency and as clean as you want to be, you don't get that without at least a bit of deal-making.

I also had floated Kucinich being offered Secretary of the Interior, and Richardson being given a shortlisting for VP. (You don't necessarily have to give Richardson VP. Shortlisting is in and of itself seen as a huge show of respect.) Edwards is given a decent seat at the table that is attractive to him. He gets a nice safety net if you win, as opposed to possibly nothing if Hillary wins. He gets out, swings his people to you, and he's in the high teens right now, so if he swings them fast, it could be an insurmountable obstacle for Hillary to overcome before Super Tuesday.

Oh. Hell. No. Not that blow-dried glad-handing shyster.

Pat Leahy, Evan Bayh, or Carl Levin would all make better AG's. I may disagree with them on most everything, but at least they know that there's more to the law than torts.

AG's and U.S. Attorneys should have at least as much experience with writing, administering, and/or or practicing public law (criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law) than with private law (torts, contracts, M&A). (Leahy and Levin were both prosecutors/State AG's, Bayh was a governor.) If all you've been doing is lining your pockets with tort lucre, go do something else.

There are better AG's.

But in this case, you do what you have to. Unless perhaps you'd like Hillary to win.

Bush tried to do something similar with Gonzalez in order to make a play for Hispanic votes. The votes did not materialize, and Gonzalez turned out to be disastrously bad at the job.

Besides, contrary to the article, this sounds more like something Hillary would do out of desperation.

Fart_Machine: MasterThief: Oh. Hell. No. Not that blow-dried glad-handing shyster.

That makes two of us. I wouldn't want him for AG either. (Treasury Secretary, maybe. Not AG.)

I'd perfer Spitzer, but if giving Edwards the AG spot is what it takes to get Obama to beat Clinton at the convention, I've got no problems with it.

/Spitzer as AG would piss off corporate America more than Edwards as AG, amazingly enough

Of all the best positions to give away to get support, giving the Secretary of the Treasury spot to Ron Paul would do wonders for Obama's campaign. He would get a good 5% of the population that otherwise wouldn't have voted for him.

Considering the DOJ is right now stuffed full of Regent grads, unvetted Caging specialists, loyal Bushies and the fact that underqualified overly loyal a**wipes like Gonzo and Monigoo were installed in positions beyond their ken such a move would be highly valuable to the nation in terms of undoing the massive damage BushCo have done in politicizing the office. There are still good people out there who quit their posts rather than succumb to the corruption who can be brought back.

Edwards has waaaay more in common with Obama in terms of ideas and policy platforms than he does with the Shrill One Who Shall Not Be Named.

The guy Jon Stewart refers to as the "douchebag of liberty"?

The traitorous vermin who assisted in outying a NOC spook working to limit the spread of nukes in the ME?

The owner and manipulator of CNN's Crossfire until it mercifully expired?

That as*clown?

The only way he can be trusted is to lie continually for his own gain.

I'm suprised that guy still can go out in public w/o being pelted with rocks and garbage.

Please don't give that Douche, Edwards any appointments.

Unlikely. Paul's supporters are primarily motivated by the specific stances he advocates, almost all of which are the antithesis of what Obama wants. Obama's supporters, on the other hand, are primarily motivated by his carefully crafted public persona as a "reformer" and an "agent of change". That's why he's able to get so much enthusiastic support as the anti-Hillary even though what he actually advocates is almost identical to what she advocates.

As I noted in a thread earlier today:

None of the three major Democratic candidates have claimed to support anything that could possibly qualify as "socialized medicine".

True. It's still a massive increase in the government involvement in the industry. Of course, the industry wouldn't be so farked up in the first place if the government hadn't artificially empowered the insurance companies. You know, the same evil insurance companies who the Democrats are promising to go after with, you guessed it, even more government interference.

Of course, the corporatist Republicans aren't really much better.

/Ron Paul

Ask yourself, people, which of these three options would you rather have:

*Barack Obama as President and John Edwards as Attorney General
*Hillary Clinton as President
*A Republican as President

I think anyone who's following this race should've figured by now Edwards will probably at least try to make a deal with Obama if it's close between Obama and Hillary. The question is just what is the deal going to be.
