It's just a training operation. And frankly everybody knows that russia can't afford any kind of military engagement these days. They can't even afford to keep antagonizing the chechens.

(Yes, the chechens have done some nasty things, but not everything nasty they've been accused of was actually done by them. And frankly i think the chechens have a pretty reasonable grudge, and should be allowed national independence as guaranteed by the commonwealth)

b2theory [TotalFark] 2008-01-25 11:33:53 AM
Really? The coming anglo-russian war? Keep in mind that the UK's primary ally has a navy that has the capability to sink the rest of the worlds navies without suffering significant casualties or loss of material. Not to mention that said ally is sworn under the articles of the NATO alliance to protect the UK.

That was just on AMC last night, good mind candy.

/reminded me that it was about time to work my way through Clancy's stuff again
//interesting watching themes shift partway through the series as the Cold War ended

Didn't he move to Canada in 2000? Or was that 2004?

Fred Thompson dropped out of the race. He was last seen on an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic.

I hope the Russians can account for all of their nuclear sub commanders with Scottish accents.

QU!RK1019 2008-01-25 03:12:23 PM
We have lost one of our submarines. We fear she may be down, and - this is most embarrassing, but - several of the officers
are sons of high party officials. One is even the son of a Central Committee member - I cannot say which.

Contemplating yer navel excercises?

How very Zen.

America's perception of herself as being the only superpower left on the globe is an over-assessment.

This is based on the insane of amounts of money spent annually on the military (not the honorable folks who serve as much as the toys) and the fact that China doesn't have a fleet of aircraft carriers with which to project power around the world the way America does.

This is also based on the fact that Russia became "safe" when the boozy Yeltsin was bribed into accepting the Washington Consensus which really Farked their economy up good.

The only thing certain is change and there's nothing new under the sun.

The Middle Kingdom rises as the America's Hegemonic Empire sinks slowly into the west.

Poot Poot is playing a dangerous game here but it appears he's playing several moves ahead of y'all.

Interesting times.

When Time magazine made everybody their man of the year it certainly went to Quatchi's head. Starting speakin' in Third person and everything.

"It was Paganini."
"Look, this is my story, okay?"
"Then tell it right, COB. Pavarotti is a tenor, Paganini was a composer."

No, but Europe will be hard pressed by the resurgence of Russia once the United States slinks back into isolation. Think the Russians will really allow the European Union to expand into Belarus or the Ukraine?

I though this might be interesting/informative regarding the nations in this article:

U.S. Navy:
Aircraft Carriers (11 Active, 1 Under Construction, 2 more Planned)
Amphibious Warefare Vessels
Amphibious Assault Ships (10 Active, 1 Under Construction)
Amphibious Transport Docks (11 Active, 3 Under Construction, 4 More Planned)
Dock Landing Ships (12 Active)
Cruisers (22 Active)
Destroyers (52 Active, 3 Under Construction, 7 More Planned)
Frigates (30 Active)
Ballistic Missile Submarines (14 Strategic Nuclear, 4 Conventional Guided Missile)
Attack Submarines (55 Active, 3 Under Construction, 5 More Planned)

Royal Navy:
Aircraft Carriers (2 Active)
Landing Platform Docks (2 Active)
Landing Platform Helicopter (1 Active)
Destroyers (8 Active)
Frigates (17 Active)
Ballistic Missile Submarines (4 Active)
Attack Submarine (9 Active)

Russian Navy
Aircraft Carriers (1 Active, 6 Planned)
Landing Ship Dock (1 Active)
Battle Cruisers (2 Active)
Cruisers (4 Active)
Destroyers (15 Active, 2 Under Construction)
Frigates (11 Active, 5 Under Construction)

It should be noted that these numbers do not indicate scale or quality of the combatants. The Arleigh Burke and Type 42 are far superior to the Sovremenny Class destroyer. Foreign nations aircraft carriers would be classified as Amphibious Assault Ships in the U.S. Navy.

Quatchi seems very impressed with his [her?] keen analytical skills, which, sadly, all boil down to being a self-loathing American.

Quatchi tries to speak like a sage, but has a hard time at navel-gazing when his head is so far up his arse.

It most certainly can afford it. More hype from the media filtering into every day conversation. The U.S. can afford (as in $$$, not manpower) a few more Iraqs and Afghanistans simultaneously. Cash is not at all the issue there.
