That's pretty good. I tend to tune out commercials, but dead silence would probably attract my attention.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-01-25 12:49:02 PM
It can't hurt in my case. I turn off the sound during commercials anyway.

I pity the people who crank up the volume and get their ears blasted when the sound comes back.

The automatic MAXIMUM LOUDNESS COMMERCIAL CIRCUITS will probably go into a feedback loop and fry electronics for miles around.

I thought that was actually pretty funny.

That's farking great.

As far as the linked commercial, if the game is about to start, why is the whole neighborhood dark? Nobody else is around watching it?

Eh

also, no caps lock headline on a deaf related link. That's different

I took sign language for a while just for the heck of it. The deaf community around Boston are pretty cool folks, but really do feel like aliens in their own country at times. There are signs in Spanish, Chinese, etc. and at a lot of businesses you find bi/multi-lingual employees to assist folks who speak other languages or are from other countries, but pretty much next to nothing for the deaf. When they meet someone who can hear and has learned ASL, not because they "had to" but just because they felt like it, folks really open up to you and appreciate it.

If I had more time, I'd keep on with it.

That was pretty good, though I could do without the self-serving crap about "diversity" at the beginning.

unchellmatt: I took sign language for a while just for the heck of it. The deaf community around Boston are pretty cool folks...

Most folks in any deaf community are very cool people. Even most of the a-holes are cool once you get to know them. My wife used to be an interpreter for the deaf/hard-of-hearing. She let her certification lapse, so now it's illegal for her to interpret. I know she'll get a kick out of this commercial. Or maybe she'll just role her eyes and say, "Yeah. Okay."

If I had more time, I'd keep on with it.

You're on Fark. Think about all the time you've wasted so far today.

There would be floods of complaints from people if they didn't have that.

Now people can't complain because they would look like insensitive pricks

The blind community is going to be pissed when this commercial airs.

thedarkshadow 2008-01-25 04:09:07 PM
Wow, there's selfish ignorant arseholes in every phase of life. Thanks for letting me know that Pepsi. I always assumed the deaf were kind and considerate people...like witches. Or elves.

Wasn't there a "silent" ad a few years back? I can't remember what it was, but part of me thinks it was some kind of ad memorializing the fallen of 9-11. Time for some googling.

EwokHunter 2008-01-25 04:43:45 PM
As a hearing impaired person, it's annoying when people come up to me and start signing. I do NOT sign, I read lips. Just talk already and put your damn hands down, it's embarrassing.

InferiousX [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-01-25 04:55:48 PM
I won't watch it on Fark.

The commercials might only be the saving grace reason for me to watch the Superbowl this year.

\hates Giants
\\hates Moss-ified Patriots
\\\Tom Petty at halftime....big ol pile of Meh.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-01-25 05:42:19 PM
That is sweet. Now if only there was a chance in hell all the commercials would be that good.

Robobuu 2008-01-25 05:53:55 PM
Converse is running a set of silent ads right now. It is so distracting really. Like, I can hear a television that is muted, but the commercials make no noise at all. No clue what's up with that.

Bot v2.38beta 2008-01-25 06:00:00 PM

I saw one of those ads last night. It was all about not giving in to marketing, thinking for yourself, don't follow the heard, BUY OUR SHOES!

farking horrible

THIS

Although one time on the subway in Paris this weird guy tried to start up a conversation with me and I got out of it by mocking sign language with a friend of mine. Trust me, he was NOT the kind of guy you want to start a conversation with.

I do wish I knew sign language, though.

Also, I loved the commercial.

Kind of related deaf story--I was driving on the NJ Turnpike and this car in the fast lane was swerving all over the place. I decided to speed up & pass it--I figured it was better to let them have an accident behind me.

As I passed the car, I looked over. There were 4 guys in it, gesticulating wildly, driver included. I realized they were 4 deaf guys arguing in AMSlan. Funniest thing I've ever seen.

Good stuff. Video was great, and I also got a laugh from the dumbass comments ("Hey, I get it! Blind people listen to it and deaf people watch it! Nothing gets by me!").

You sure they weren't just Italian? I mean, that would explain both the wild gesticulation and the equally wild driving.

And the fact they were in North Jersey certainly adds credence to your theory. But no, I paced them for a while & know a little AMSlan. They were arguing. The driver would sometimes complete turn around in his seat trying to get his point across to those in the back seat.

I cracked up the whole ride home.

cool commercial.cool coke "ad" too.the coke ad made my brain hurt hearing one thing and reading something else.
brigid_fitch [TotalFark] that would of had me rolling to and i dont know any sing language at all but i recognize it when used.a friends mom and dad were both deaf.

I know. I used to take classes when I was a child because my great grandmother was deaf. She never learned ASL, but she liked to take me around and use me as an 'interpreter'. Usually at the ice cream store, or to buy cookies (hey, I was seven, and she was nearly in her 90's, I was happy with ice cream, and she just wanted to crochet half the time.).

My only complaint about it now: I can't take the classes at the University of WY because they refuse to recognize ASL as a language. They won't give credit for it if I take it, so I'm stuck at the moment at taking a language class because they also refuse to hire a certified Japanese teacher (a history teacher from Japan who hates his job, and hates teaching Japanese, is the one currently employed.)

Sometimes I wish people would be forced to take ASL classes, and be introduced to the deaf community, to know what it's really like.

/had a boss who knew some ASL because he had hearing issues
//I don't think he ever realized that I knew ASL
///does anyone know any good web sites to study ASL from? It would be fun to pick it up again

Other companies have really seen a positive view of deafness.

Check this sound equipment manufacturing company's ad.

Link to a cool ad. (new window)

I remember Terry Gilliam (I think) talking about trying to do a special episode of Monty Python where over a long period they'd keep reducing the volume so home viewers would keep cranking it up, and then at the end playing something very loud and blowing out everyone's speakers.

The masters back at the BBC nixed that one.

I am partially hearing impaired, I mishear things all the time, so I learned to read lips as well.

Only time it sucks is when someone has a farked up accent or mumbles/slurs alot.
