The problem is that UN talks of "arms control and disarmament" generally means governments disarming the law abiding people as a prelude to genocide or as a means of dictators to secure their power, as has/is happening in Kenya and Uganda. (All under UN supervision of course.)

Human Rights Atrocities: The Consequences of United Nations Gun Confiscation in East Africa (new window) Article is a PDF from 2006.

......Obote was restored to power in 1979, after Amin attacked Tanzania, and was toppled by the Tanzanian army. Obote again began to attempt to disarm the (Law abiding) Karamojong. His efforts were forcefully repelled. The Karamojong had learned that cows and guns are equally indispensable: a person needs a gun immediately at hand to protect one's herd. The most-armed tribes fared the best......

Excellent! Another incompetent Bush crony appointed to a plush government position where he can fark up the world while increasing the profits of Cheney's military-industrial complex.

This corruption is so farkign transparent, yet all it warrants is a paragraph hidden on AP and hardly reprinted in US media outlets.

This administration's consistently arrogant pattern of intentionally corrupt cronyism seriously makes my head assplode.

Crosshair: UN talks of "arms control and disarmament"

That's nice. This is not a UN position though.

disarming the law abiding people

And it is arms control at a national level, not a personal level - like pending nuclear deals with India and North Korea and an offer to negotiate with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

But that barrow won't push itself, I guess :)

Yes, because only the UN has attempted "arms control" policies that have lead to a disarmed populace and genocide. *rolleyes*

And it is arms control at a national level, not a personal level - like pending nuclear deals with India and North Korea and an offer to negotiate with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

Put that in the same category as "The Income Tax will only be applied to the wealthy", "Your Social Security Number will not be used as a form of identification", and "Iran was not given weapons for hostages."

Recall all Repuglikkkans: spiderbarks: What's next John Bolton for Chief of Protocol?

No, he's busy criticizing the intelligence communities after they published the NIE report making the administration look like numbskulls. Nothing like attacking the messenger when messages after message makes everything you've done look like something a brain-dead monkey wouldn't try. The neocons are instead telling us to trust their what's been called "faith-based intelligence gathering."

Oh, how I can't wait until 1/20/2009 and the end of this insanity.

Uhm, the NIE didn't really change anything. It confirmed that Iran was pursuing nukes up until 2003.. Now what could have happened in 2003 to cause Iran to not wantnooclear weapons so much... hmmmmm... it was something... hmmm

Well, anyway, until I remember what it was, keep in mind that the Iranians didn't actually change anything structural with their weapons program. They just moved the goalpost a little closer to "civilian grade" as opposed to "weapons grade". However, that's not really a significant downgrade because the only difference between weapons grade and civilian grade is a few more days in the centrifuges. That's the difference between a slow oozing emission, and *BOOOM* emission. Keep in mind also that we didn't find that out from the Iranians, we found that out through intelligence collection despite their continuous denial of any nuclear ambitions.

OH! I remembered what it was! "That '70s Show" got cancelled, that's what stopped them...

No, I'm just very skeptical that any political figure says. Arms control is a touchy subject because it has had disasterous consequences in the past. Over 100 million killed by their own governments in the 20th century, most of it perpetuated under the guise of good intentions. This position could very well lead Wolfowitz to a UN position if he plays his cards right.

Regardless of our differing ideologies, on this issue, I think we can all agree that Wolfowitz shouldn't be managing a McDonalds.

I also tend to sound more radical online than I really am. I have mostly Libertarian leanings. I try to follow the "You leave me alone, I leave you alone." I do tend to go a little overboard sometimes.

You have to have a proven track record of failure before they'll give you a high level job in international politics these days. It's like when they gave someone with a track record of starting and supporting wars in the Middle East the role of international Middle East peace envoy. What's Cheney's next job going to be? International gun safety advisor?

I'm actually not incredibly familiar with Paul Wolfowitz, but whenever I see a leftist outcry against anyone in Bush's cabinet anymore I always presume their innocence. The reason for this being that no one is perfect, and when they do fark up, the press is sure to be up their ass about it, often misreporting it or blowing it out of proportion. The small amount of government work experience I have has shown me this.

/It was the same with Clinton, I don't play favorites.

Yep, I was a bit left once upon a time. Then I turned 22 and realized that it was all just a bunch of idealistic crap. So yes, knee-jerks all around because I've been bullshiatted too many times by the democrats. I research most issues I feel strongly about pretty thoroughly and I read the Economist. But things like this, I trust the Bush administration more than I trust the Dems in the House and the Senate. That's less a statement of how much I like Bush, and more a statement of how witless and incompetent the Dems have shown themselves to be.

Maybe those in Congress that carry that copy of the constitution in their purse or pocket should get one with writing large enough to read.

Five years with using current knowledge of Wolfowitz's history, this might have received headlines.

Now it is just a, oh another bush crony with a bad history gets yet another position. No news here.

After all, when an Bush n Co have a number of major scandals and weekly minor scandals, a really questionable placement is not news.

So do they keep bush in a glass cube? Has he ever been exposed to opinion polls, what people thing that have not drank the cool-aid? I am not sure if he is just a well-managed puppet or has such a world vision that there is no changing course?

WTF? How bad does it have to get? I want to see what will happen in the last six months when he is in true lame duck mode.

To expand on what Binnster said, the most voracious critics of Wolfowitz are from the "Old Right", the Taft wing of the Republican Party.

Know why?

Because the school of political thought that Wolfowitz comes from is a direct descendant of Trotskyism.
