first, 10,000 maniacs were awsome.

second, maybe the music industry should go back to what works...boy bands.

I love it. shiat like Soulja Boy was the biggest thing in 2007, and record label execs scratch their heads when people don't buy cds.

I don't know what's going on in that headline, but I'm listing to Natalie Merchant now and will not miss this opportunity to express my love for her and 10,000 Maniacs digitally: <3

When Anne Murray has a top 50 album and it isn't available on 8-track, the industry should consider itself lucky sales are only down 10%.

I don't buy physical CDs anymore, but I do receive them as gifts. It's mostly iTMS purchases for me, if not so many lately.

/Nightwish's 2007 album is very good, even with a new singer.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but, if you're not looking incredibly diligently, it's difficult to find anything decent. I'm still holding out hope for '08. Until I find anything worthwhile, I've been looking into the past for bands I was too young to appreciate/never heard. In recent times, I've been mainly listening to these guys
www.dullicious.com

Instead of griping about the state of the industry (which is warranted), I would be interested in hearing what some people have enjoyed this past year. The only album I was really excited for last year was Tiger Army's "Music From Regions Beyond," which was decent. Also, Tinariwen is one of the few bands I was introduced to in 2007 that I actually liked. What say you?

I really hate people who dont know how too use apostrophe's correctly. I once new these to guys who tried putting one before every "s", and I really should of hit them, but I would of gotten in trouble with there parent's.

Yes, he didn't post that, but it's in his profile; I consider that fair game.

You are annoying and you are dumb.
That is all.

You forgot to make fun of his needless apostrophe at the end of his senseless rant about people who misuse apostrophes. He seems to stupid to be snarky like that...

Nice choice, indeed. 1965 has got to be one of the best albums of the last ten years. With that said, you can't go wrong with The Hold Steady, My Morning Jacket, or Drive-By Truckers.

I think it was The Onion, but I remember reading an article or something that took this idea of stringing band names into a coherent statement and really ran with it. Anyone have a link?

Burial - Untrue
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga
Grizzly Bear - Yellow House (2006, but it's an AMAZING album)
Hayden - Elk Lake Serenade
Panda Bear - Person Pitch

ClicheGuevara07: All hearing The Sounds of all of these horrible artists, I'm positive that the music industry is Against Me!

What, with a name like Cliche Guevara you like AM!? Never would have guessed it. So long as they never write another song like "Stop" again, I'd be ok with that.

devioustrevor 2008-01-24 11:52:52 PM
There really isn't anything worthy buying anymore. I bought exactly 4 CD's in the past 5 years. All four were bought at live shows I seen in London, Ontario. 2 by Bobnoxious, 1 by Bedouin Soundclash and 1 by Ekatree. I enjoyed purchasing the CD's that way because I knew that the money was going directly to the bands.

whatshisname 2008-01-24 11:55:35 PM
That's the most hackneyed use of band names I've ever seen.

Meetak 2008-01-25 12:04:25 AM
Sales are down because they are basing their estimates on past sales numbers of ridiculously overpriced CD's,which are being replaced by affordable digital sources.

Case in point :i walk into a store, and they have a copy of Hunky Dory (vintage Bowie, for those who don't know) on sale FOR 27 FRAKKIN DOLLARS!!!

Or i can get it on iTunes for 10.99.

of course sales are down if you base it on total gross dollar amounts...but anyone I know who makes money fromm music gets about twice as much from a digital sale as from a CD sale...and cash to musicians is the only part of the music industry we should ever worry about..

Fragerach When there's something worth buying, I'll buy it. There hasn't been something worth buying for a very long time.

This seems so simple to me. I steal music I would never have paid for anyway. I buy music that's worth my money. So, invest in good, creative artists. If they really let the free market rule in the music biz, I truly believe we wouldn't have to worry about Nickelback and Hinder, and better bands would get more exposure.

i got news for the riaa, it ain't piracy that's killing sales.
it's stupid copyright lawsuits, drm's, overpriced cd's that wear out, cd's that are so compressed in format they sound like crap, and cookie cutter bands.

picturescrazy 2008-01-26 01:17:32 PM
I think we can all agree that this is a simple case of people wanting to spend their money on things they like, and there was 10% less music that people liked that was released last year. At least by labels covered by the RIAA.
