I wasn't trying to imply anything by that, it's just my literal experience. As for being a successful businessman and an All-American, that kind of voting mindset leaves the population (especially the uneducated population) vulnerable to manipulation and pandering based on nothing more substantial than being kind of like Reagan, which didn't work out too well the first time. This election is way too important to be thinking about who's photogenic and able to cut deals the best.

I'm calling mormon on you. He's not 'smart and polished'. He refuses to have any contact with the media outside of pre-planned conferences, he's constantly changing positions to whatever is politically expediant at the moment, he's completely dishonest.

Not only is this guy a douche, he's also a tool. That article earlier about how everybody hates him showed it pretty well. The other republicans don't just trash him like they have to do to any competition, they actually shun him outside the debates, and he says "Oh, yeah, it's fine, these guys are my friends." It'd be like punching a puppy dog to pick on someone that naive but I don't think he's ever tied himself to the roof of a car.

So anyways I'd love if he got the nomination.

Rudy wants to definitively make a policy that makes energy independence just as important a goal today as going to the moon was in the 1960s. At least the educated people can grasp what their respective positions actually are. McCain wasn't saying the Iraq war would continue for one hundred years, but rather that the American military will maintain bases in Iraq for as long as it possibly can, and even a complete ceasing of all hostilities would NOT trigger the complete troop withdrawal that many voters are naively demanding. Honestly, it wasn't that difficult to understand his meaning, especially when he used US bases in Germany and Japan as comparative examples. Once an American military presence is established in a country, ANY country, it's in America's best strategic interests to continue that presence. Duh.

As for Ron Paul, he believes in firm isolationism, as well as a fatalistic inevitability of trouble in the Middle East. He doesn't think everything will be roses if the US leaves. Quite the contrary, he thinks the mess over there will remain a mess whether the US stays or goes, so the military might as well pull out and stop trying to bring peace to the region. He simply doesn't believe peace is possible, and the troop casualties suffered in the attempts to achieve it have all been needless and wasteful. His viewpoint isn't shared by many hardcore Republicans, but it's a popular one among quite a few Democrats and Libertarians.

You're entitled to disagree with both men and their beliefs, but first make the effort to understand their beliefs. Boiling everyone's positions down into misleading soundbites is a job for the media, not for an informed voter.

I know you're not necessarily defending his position, but rather laying it out, but I want to note that those two countries never had the intense, not going to go away hatred for us that the radicals in Iraq have, even during WWII. I also think we don't need to be in either of those countries, even though they're awesome posts.
