Mitt and Florida go together like Mormons and Crazy. It's like a match made in.. uhh.. a hat containing golden tablets.

WHY WHY WHY???

Who likes Romney? I haven't met anyone that likes him besides Mormons. You know the guys in highschool that wore nothing but Hollister and whatnot, with slightly to the side hats and sunglasses, that pretty much defined the word douchebag for a generation? Romney is the political equivalent of that.

I say it now.

I will laugh so hard if he gets the nomination. Remember all of the shiat the GOP gave John Kerry for flip-flopping? If Romney gets the nomination, we'll pay them back in spades.

I like Romney of all the serious contenders running currently. He's smart, polished, he's been in several leadership situations, he's a successful businessman, he's the farking posterchild of an All-American.

People get hung up on the fact that the man is Mormon. SO WHAT. This smacks of Kennedy's Catholicism in the 60s.

I wasn't trying to imply anything by that, it's just my literal experience. As for being a successful businessman and an All-American, that kind of voting mindset leaves the population (especially the uneducated population) vulnerable to manipulation and pandering based on nothing more substantial than being kind of like Reagan, which didn't work out too well the first time. This election is way too important to be thinking about who's photogenic and able to cut deals the best.

The guy was governator of Massachusetts. he saved the Salt Lake City olympics from certain doom. he's been a successful businessperson, lawyer, and helped to solve a healthcare crisis in Massachusetts. AND FOR CHRISSAKES, THE GOP WILL HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS ARTICULATE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA AGAIN!

I'm calling mormon on you. He's not 'smart and polished'. He refuses to have any contact with the media outside of pre-planned conferences, he's constantly changing positions to whatever is politically expediant at the moment, he's completely dishonest.

Not only is this guy a douche, he's also a tool. That article earlier about how everybody hates him showed it pretty well. The other republicans don't just trash him like they have to do to any competition, they actually shun him outside the debates, and he says "Oh, yeah, it's fine, these guys are my friends." It'd be like punching a puppy dog to pick on someone that naive but I don't think he's ever tied himself to the roof of a car.

So anyways I'd love if he got the nomination.

I have this very eery feeling that November is shaping up to be a Mitt vs. Hillary event - ominously reminiscent of his election over Democratic rival Shannon O'Brien in Massachusetts, in that it would be Mitt against a liberal, shrill, older blonde woman. Even liberal Massachusttes voted for him in that scenario. Will history repeat itself for Mitt? Will anyone ever vote for a blonde woman over Mitt?

Barry Goldwater was successful, conservative and a brilliant speaker. He was also instrumental in the election of LBJ. Nominating Romney would be 1964 all over again.

No, because in 2002, Mitt was a pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gray rights, pro-stem cell candidate. He's since changed his stance on everything he stood for in 2002.

You can't find a single position he held in 2002 that he holds today.

Do you really think the anti-Hillary vote will be strong enough to get the Republican John Kerry elected? That someone who is soundly beaten among moderates by John McCain could take Obama?

/unless your point was that Goldwater was a strong, viable candidate who LBJ narrowly defeated after a close campaign

Rudy wants to definitively make a policy that makes energy independence just as important a goal today as going to the moon was in the 1960s. Too bad he's such a dumbass on other issues, some of what he says could really be good for the country. Too bad, so sad, back to New York with you Mr. 9/11 man.

I think this may change.
Russert: How much of yuor personal money have you spent in Florida?
Romney: You'll find that out on January 31st, when the FEC requires me to reveal that.
Russert: Why not now, when the voters can use it to factor into their decision?
Romney- and this is the actual quote that came out of his mouth: "I'm not concerned about the voters. I'm concerned about the people up here on stage."

Repeat:

Mitt Romney: "I'm not concerned about the voters."

Bye, Mitt.

I'll do you one better. Chris Matthews just interviewed Huckabee and asked about WMDs in Iraq. Huckabee said they very well may have gone to JORDAN. Anybody catch that? In a country with any amount of educated voters, he would be done. Serously, anybody catch that?

Come on, everyone knows the U.A.E. took at least half of the WMDs. The rest went to Turkey!

Oh, wait, you mean our allies don't smuggle WMDs from our enemies? Well, shucks, I guess I was wrong!

Seriously though, there isn't one person running for president from the GOP side that has any idea what they're talking about when it comes to foreign policy. Paul and McCain are the only two somewhat knowledgeable ones, but McCain's "We'll be in Iraq for 100 years!" is facepalm-worthy, and Paul's "If we just leave, everything will be roses!" is just as bad. I feel bad for the educated people in that party. It must suck.

At least the educated people can grasp what their respective positions actually are. McCain wasn't saying the Iraq war would continue for one hundred years, but rather that the American military will maintain bases in Iraq for as long as it possibly can, and even a complete ceasing of all hostilities would NOT trigger the complete troop withdrawal that many voters are naively demanding. Honestly, it wasn't that difficult to understand his meaning, especially when he used US bases in Germany and Japan as comparative examples. Once an American military presence is established in a country, ANY country, it's in America's best strategic interests to continue that presence. Duh.

As for Ron Paul, he believes in firm isolationism, as well as a fatalistic inevitability of trouble in the Middle East. He doesn't think everything will be roses if the US leaves. Quite the contrary, he thinks the mess over there will remain a mess whether the US stays or goes, so the military might as well pull out and stop trying to bring peace to the region. He simply doesn't believe peace is possible, and the troop casualties suffered in the attempts to achieve it have all been needless and wasteful. His viewpoint isn't shared by many hardcore Republicans, but it's a popular one among quite a few Democrats and Libertarians.

You're entitled to disagree with both men and their beliefs, but first make the effort to understand their beliefs. Boiling everyone's positions down into misleading soundbites is a job for the media, not for an informed voter.

CaesarSneezy 2008-01-25 12:09:02 AM
Maybe Huckabee thought Jordan and Iraq were a family franchise?

I know you're not necessarily defending his position, but rather laying it out, but I want to note that those two countries never had the intense, not going to go away hatred for us that the radicals in Iraq have, even during WWII. I also think we don't need to be in either of those countries, even though they're awesome posts.
