This state is bursting with crappy laws from what I've seen in my short stay here. A jerk chicken omelet and sangria is the perfect Sunday brunch.

strathmeyer 2008-01-25 01:19:40 PM
"Early Thursday, lawmakers at the state legislature began debating whether to legalize sangria in Virginia, an official said."

If Virginia elects lawmakers to which is this is a complex, difficult decision, no wonder the government is in the toilet.

whimofsteel 2008-01-25 01:20:24 PM
The funny part is, they're trying to figure out how to word the law so that Sangria is legal but boilermakers are not. Right now all drinks with hard alcohol mixed with beer or wine are illegal.

/turn this into a recipe for drinks illegal in Virginia thread?

Another rule bars restaurateurs and bartenders from "keeping liquor in a container other than a bottle with a tax stamp on it," said Marshall.

Anybody remember what happened to these? I haven't seen one in years.

Additional details from another article:

"We're a little nervous of expanding the law," said House Minority Leader Ward L. Armstrong (D-Henry), who served for 16 years on a committee that wrote alcohol laws. "We're a conservative state and a conservative legislature. Some of that's good. Some of it's bad."

Mostly it's all bad.

Hall said Jaleo changed the recipe for sangria at its Crystal City location, which serves up to 2,000 customers a week, but not at its District or Bethesda locations. He said some customers have noticed the difference in taste.

"It disturbs us," Hall said. "We can't offer real sangria."

I have noticed a disturbance in the Sangria force. Like a million voices cried out "WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS SH*T???"

It's not just sangria. Other popular drinks are also off-limits, including kir royals, which are made with sparkling wine, and boilermakers, which include beer and a shot of liquor. Also prohibited are a host of newly fashionable beer cocktails, but Ebbin's bill allows only sangria.

"It was something that caught us off guard. It is not something that has been on the radar for us," said Barrett Hardiman, director of government relations for the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association, which represents about 1,100 restaurants in the state. "A lot of people are surprised. . . . It seems archaic to us."

Welcome to Virginia biatch. BJ's are also illegal here. It's perfectly legal to walk into rec centers or libraries with guns strapped to your side wild west style though. Go figure.

Sen. J. Chapman "Chap" Petersen (D-Fairfax) helped pass a law a few years ago when he served in the House on behalf of Korean restaurants that wanted to serve the traditional drink soju, a beverage made of sweet distilled alcohol.

"Sometimes I feel in Virginia we're still working off a prohibition mentality," Petersen said. "The rigid construct of state laws is not reflective of modern times."

Thank you Chap! That's why I voted for you in the last election, even though you always wear those silly bow ties.

Mr. Peabody: Sounds very sexy but I will not "shoot" until I see the whites of their thighs. Oh, weave me another of your 1001 tales and I will blow my "Sheherawad."

Recipe for real sangria, like you'd find on the beaches of Spain.

Half a jug of cheap red wine
A good amount of gin
A good amount of 43 Liquor (Cuarenta y Tres)
A slice or two of orange (optional)

Drink until you pass out on the beach, wake up with sunburn from hell.

O yes, let's please make a list of all things illegal in VA.

I plan to do all of them.

/Made Sangrias last spring break.

"Irish Car Bombs" (Guinness, Jameson, Baileys) are also "illegal" but some bars will still hook you up.

Stupid antiquated laws...

Virginia is for Sangria Lovers?

Apparently, not so much?

Anyone on this board from Virginee?

Quick question...

How can yer state tourism board motto be "Virginia is for lovers" and yet oral sex even between married couples in the privacy of their own home be illegal due to the Puritan-esque Crimes Against Nature Laws?

The poll showed that 81.7 percent of respondents believe that it should not be illegal for married couples to have oral sex in the privacy of their own home, and 65.2 percent said they favored repealing the Crimes Against Nature law. Only 20 percent said that the law should not be repealed, and 14.8 percent were undecided on the issue

Shouldn't the motto be changed to "Virginia is for descendents of the original Puritans who never evolved"

Kinda wordy but more truthful doncha think?

/Why don't Southern Baptists have sex while standing up?
//They don't want other folk to catch them at it and think they're dancing.

yotta: I call bullshiat! A proper boilermaker is never pre-mixed.

not bullshiat... not because it is mixed but because, another stupid VA law, you are not allowed to drop a shot glass into another glass, one bar I frequented in college got around this by serving boiler makers in plastic beer mugs with the shot glass on the side.

Another stupid VA Booze law... no patron at a bar is supposed to have more than one drink in front of them at a time.

Life long VA resident

Hardy har Mr. Geek. Have you ever been to Virginia. Before you go slandering our state make sure you read your history. The Puritans landed up North, John Smith and his crew landed in Southern Virginia on the James river, about where most of our Air Craft Carriers are built. You know, the ships that kept us from speaking German and/or Japanese? Yeah thats right, the ships that protect your liberty of hiding behind a computer and throwing out insults. Ohh yeah I forgot, Virginia is where most of our Senators and Representatives live as well, you know the people that work in DC?

Anything else Mr. Smarty pants?

Wow...from Sangria to Sodomy. I guess that's a pretty natural progression, depending on the amount of sangria.

I dunno, but I do know that when you get married, your wife suddenly decides she doesn't want to risk going to jail anymore.

Jairzinho 2008-01-25 02:01:25 PM
I'm not sure if this is the same clause, but few years ago when I went to a Spanish restaurant in Shirlington (Arlington) they could no longer offer me sangria in a pitcher with the food as they used to but in a single glass in the bar (not on the table). They told me about some old law being now enforced in restaurants regarding beverages with hard liquor.

Anyway, having that day my paella without sangria really sucked.

She, after being married for 15+ years, will eventually overcome that fear thinking that you may lose interest in her. That's what I'ev been told at least.

/married for less than 15 years.
