Obviously submittard has never heard Mayer's guitar playing. The guy could hold his own against Clapton, Hendrix, etc.

Guess you'll just have to wait on the world to change then, eh subby?

Then he should stick to just that.

I think that he'll get there eventually, but he's not quite there yet. If you watch him play, you can tell that he's still putting too much thought into it, and so his playing is a little mechanical. Eventually he'll relax a bit and get that nice soulful feel to his playing.

Count me in as a JM fan. The JM3 cd was awesome. Guys like Clapton love JM because of his talent.

And Christina Aguilera has an amazing voice. Still doesn't excuse the fact that both of him have shiatty choice in the material that they perform.

JM is a guitarist's guitarist. He's shared the stage, and held his own with guys like Clapton and B.B. King. That's enough validation for me.

What!? No more photos of him in the bear suit with Sheryl Crow in a bikini holding a cheerleader baton?

Sonofabiatch wants us to take him seriously?

Uh uh.

Hasn't he already stopped making music to be a full-time "comedian"/douchebag?

I love the skit with John & Dave Chapelle when they sneak up on different racial groups
to observe how they react to guitar music.

Mayer has said that he supports Ron Paul
and the lyrics fit well in Waiting for the World to Change (new)

I had pretty much written John Mayer off as another shiatty Dave Matthews clone up until I listened to this album, it's good, it's really good, and Mayer is a phenominal guitar player.

Croooow!: he writes the worst lyrics I've ever heard, but he is the best guitar player of his generation

Which isn't saying a whole lot. Don't get me wrong, he's a good player, but 30 years ago he would've been considered average at best.

I disagree. I think he gets a message across simply without sounding too pretentious.

I thought he was pretty awesome when I was in my college "I love acoustic music" phase. His second album turned me off. I bought the the JM Trio cd and thought it was incredible, and he followed it up well with Continuum, which I thought was the best album he'd done.

I do think he seems like a douchebag, but seems cool at the same time.

Michael Romeo and Mikael Akerfeldt die of laughter.

Clapton and Hendrix aren't nearly the best guitarists ever, influential certainly...

Not bad, for his guitar playing, but the lyrics...

Scott the Twat 2008-01-24 04:56:33 PM
His songs make me wretch.
His voice makes me punch things (often living).
His personality, though, when I've seen him in interviews, on his show, etc. is very, very cool.

Oh, and his playing is impressive. But that's pretty secondary if the songs suck.

He'll be back. He's just taking a break so that he can record, this way that he'll very little distracting him while he's recording it. Just look at the span between entries when he made his last album, he was recording for a while there. Although his blog does make me laugh.

The lights shining through on you.
Yes, Im with you my love,
Its the morning and just we two.
Ill stay with you darling now,
Ill stay with you till my seas are dried up

Not trying to stick up for John Mayer here too much, but c'mon. Sunshine Of Your Love could've been written by a sophomore in high school English/Lit class right now. And like Brendan Fraser said in Airheads "So you're gonna tell me Purple Haze says something?". I suspect there's more of a generation thing going on here.

Say what you will about his talent- the guy is legitimately hilarious. Don't believe me? Watch through the first sketch:

John Mayer.
You know John Myers sits down when he pees?

Count me in the group that thinks Hendrix is infinitely better.

Glenechocreek: That guy's a poser, and he couldn't come up with an original lick if his life depended on it.

And your grammy's are kept in what corner of your parents basement?

With that said...

I think Derek Trucks, John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa are taking things over from the 70's guitar gods quite nicely.

I really can't understand the hate for John Mayer. The guy writes catchy pop tunes for money and women, then tours with a power trio for fun. In a way, he uses the music industry as his biotch, and doesn't have to compromise his integrity any more than he chooses.
I certainly can't do that. Lets face it, the days of Blue oyster cult and Ted Nugent selling out stadiums with 35 minute guitar solos are gone.

By the way, John still grabs a lesson here and there from Berkley Genius Tomo Fuijito.

oldandwiser 2008-01-24 09:23:21 PM
Nobody can hold their own against Jimi Hendrix.
That is a foolish statement.
I realize that most of you have only heard the 12 songs the radio plays all the time, but if you dig deep and listen to his live stuff, no can or ever will touch his talent.

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Terry Kath could hold his own vs. Hendrix.
This is partially because he was amazing, but more so because Hendrix said he was the greatest guitar player he knew.

Also, Mayer plays an amazing version of Wait 'Till Tomorrow- my second favorite Hendrix song.

Sounds alot like Tom Morello. I'm not saying he's a better player than Hendrix, and he hasn't expanded the vocabulary of the guitar as much either, but your description seems very fitting for both of them.

You fail at understanding. He wrote the song criticizing his generation for not doing anything cept sit back and wait for things to take care of themselves.

I'm not much of a fan of his, but I've seen him five times as The Girlfriend loves him. He's very good in concert, does a very good SRV cover of Lenny, loves to jam and takes his music seriously. His Trio thing is excellent, very respectful

It's a shame that you can't hear him in concert due to the ridiculous amounts of teens going through puberty screaming at the top of their lungs.

He's got a pretty good chance at maturing and getting much better at songwriting,

Say what you will about John Mayer, but he is a terrific guitar player by any standard. Just because some teeny-bopper girls get hot & bothered by the guy doesn't negate that fact.

But... b-b-b-but but... Hendrix was better!

Yeah. Hendrix was better. At playing Hendrix type stuff. Mayer not only has some blues & rock chops, but there's some jazzy stuff in there that Hendrix might or might not have been so adept at. Listen to the guitar licks on "Neon", for instance. There is some great playing going on in there.

Could Segovia pull off "Purple Haze"? Could Stevie Ray Vaughan play Respighi? It's apples and oranges, kids.

VickInABox 2008-01-25 10:27:20 AM
Mayer's a very good guitarist, but those songs are godawful and it's going way out on a limb to compare him to Hendrix.

gatormom 2008-01-25 11:26:48 AM
Hands down, best ever concert I've seen. You really need to see this guy live to appreciate how truly talented he is.
