I was fortunate to see him play at a friend's club a few years before his death. It was a great show.

"He was born in Big Beaver by the borderline
He started playing hockey by the time he was nine
His dad took the hose and froze the back yard
And Little Buddy dreamed he was Rocket Richard
He grew up big and he grew up tough
He saw himself scoring for the Wings or Canucks
But he wasn't that good with a puck"

.....Great tune.

Great to see the Zevon fans come out of the woodwork.

Great song, too. Mr.Bad Example has to be his most underappreciated album.

love Warren Z

You've been up all night listening for his drum
Hoping that the righteous might just might just might just come
I heard the General whisper to his aide-de-camp
"Be watchful for Mohammed's lamp"

Don't it make you want to rock and roll
All night long.....

/ Mohammed's Radio
// rock and roll .. all night long

Damned hard to find anymore, too. Currently out of print (which amazes me, considering how consistently great the material is); had to pay $30 recently for a used copy to replace my original which had gone missing. Worth every cent, though.

Lots and lots and lots of live shows of his on archive.org. Check out the mid-90s cover of Into the Mystic live.

Finished his ex-wife's biography of him a few weeks ago, it was very good (although the last 100 pages relied on his diary too much). Zevon was a great piece of work, we were lucky to have him. His family, not so much, but so many of our great artists are awful in their personal life ... the price we (and they) pay, I guess.

Play it all night long ......

I love how "screw" made it past the NBC censors, but "cock" got bleeped. There was an old poster for Mr. Bad Example on ebay a couple of months ago, and I could kick myself for not making a play for it.

/I confess, I am subby. Wanted a version of "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead," but no such luck.

Holy crap, I've hit the motherload! Thank you for that link. Downloaded 3 already, and that is a GREAT site. You sir/madam, may have a cookie. I would sponsor you but you are already a TFer.

The phrase 'best ever' is way overused, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a better songwriter than Warren Zevon.

I get some credit here, too. I'm the one who did the legwork to get him on there in the first place(via permission of his son, Jordan).

There are some damn good shows on there too. :)

/looking for a tape of the only show I saw live (Mar 28 2000 House of Blues in LA) if anyone has a legit source.

Thank you, Mr. Zevon, you'll always be known to me as the guy who had a catchy tune called Werewolves of London, as heard in Scorcese's Color of Money, starring Tom Cruise, and when i went to buy your album, i was disappointed to find it completely sucked.

Creeping Malaise 2008-01-25 12:51:49 PM
No problem. I have a special fondness for live boots. Especially from my favorite artists. So the month sponsorship was worth the several shows now residing in my Zen player...

Well, there's your problem right there. If you bought one of Warren's albums BECAUSE of Werewolves of London and not IN SPITE of it, your music sensibilities are clearly all jumbly.

T.rex 2008-01-25 02:35:43 PM
DrBenway, i respect your retort. I clearly admit that there is something i'm not 'getting'.

T.rex: DrBenway, i respect your retort. I clearly admit that there is something i'm not 'getting'.

I was going to make a snarky comment about Zevon's work not being very accessible to the masses (generally) but DrBenway did a better job of it and was really less offensive than I would have been.

Mostly, I guess, listen to the lyrics and his nearly metaphysical ability to perform gymnastics with words and phrases and ideas - and if you've got the ability or training notice how really complex some of the melodies and harmonies and arrangements are. I'd recommend either Learning to Flinch or I'll Sleep when I'm Dead as introductions to the man. YMMV (as will others' opinions).

"and if california slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will...

Samper - that's my favorite WZ line, this is my second

She really worked me over good
She was a credit to her gender
She put me through some changes Lord
Sorta like a Waring blender

Creeping Malaise 2008-01-25 10:48:13 PM
Favorite WZ passages?

Loneliness and frustration
We both came down with an acute case
And when the lights came up at two
I caught a glimpse of you
And your face looked like something
Death brought with him in his suitcase
-The French Inhaler

The past seems realer than the present to me now
I've got memories to last me
When the sky is gray The way it is today
I remember the times when I was happy
Same old sun Same old moon
It's the same old story
Same old tune They all say Someday soon
My sins will all be forgiven
Gentle rain Falls on me
All life folds back Into the sea
We contemplate eternity
Beneath the vast indifference of heaven
- The Indifference of Heaven

Xaneidolon [TotalFark] 2008-01-25 11:29:32 PM
Too many passages to pick just one...but I do like those two that CM quoted quite a bit.

For some Zevonian fun, play consecutively:

Alabama & Southern Man by Neil Young
Sweet Home Alabama by Skynnard (sp?)
and then
Play It All Night Long by Zevon
