(Yahoo) Dumbass MPAA: Hey, that study we did that says that 44% of illegal downloading is done from colleges, the one we used to justify tighter copyright laws? Yeah, it's actually more like 15%   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 38

oops, we were caught lying again.
Well as long as the current administration can lie to the faces of the American public AND smirk, then by god we can too.

Did we say 44% we meant 51% ! which is the number you got but are too dyslexic from illegal downloads to read it correctly enough to attempt to not slander us. We're gonna sue you!

\you are so sued.

Translation: 'Well, we got caught lying again. Not that it really matters, because those dumb farks up on capital hill will sign whatever legislation we send them into law. Sure, it's expensive to buy a few congressthings but boy howdy does it pay off! The best part is that about 30% of the voters are so sexually repressed and yearning for a firm boot stamping down on their necks that we can pass just about the most ass farking restrictive bills we can imagine and they'll actually *agree* with us! Good thing our customers are slobbering idiots, I don't know what i'd do if I had to go and get a real job!'

None of this changes the fact that anyone dl and sharing on a college net is a moran.

They're watching those and everyone knows it.

Dear MPAA,

People are more likely to steal from people/organizations that they don't like.

On the other hand, most of the colleges i've been to have been pretty light on network/wi-fi security. So while they might be watching those networks, they're also pretty open and easy to abuse with lots of problems tracing just who's doing the trading.

Good thing Congress is actually getting their news off hand from some guy who briefly glanced at the news feed this morning, plus the guy who doesn't actually work for the MPAA.

However his boss does, and an employee of his did the study.

If they're only now beginning to learn that the Internet is not, in fact, "a series of tubes," then you can't be shocked.

What I want to know is, how many people got fired as a result of this "mistake"? I work in research... if I made a mistake this big, I'd not only be fired, I'd probably be blackballed.

People tend to not be bothered by stealing from thieves. The music conglomerates are nothing more than a bunch of thieves. Hence you have the current state of affairs.

I'm going to guess that the guy who came up with the number works in the 'pulling figures out of our asses' dept, and got a raise instead.

The original report, by research firm LEK, claims the U.S. motion picture industry lost $6.1 billion to piracy worldwide, with most of the losses overseas.

With bullshiat like that, it surprises you? They didn't lose anything other than a potential income assuming that everyone that downloaded would purchase and I'd love to see them prove that claim. The MPAA and the RIAA spout this crap constantly and governments buy it, but it's still crap.

I Like Bread 2008-01-23 12:09:48 AM
Well, DUH.
We all know that large companies in the public eye never go after the biggest cause of their problems. First they try to eliminate the ones that are easiest to vilify in the public eye.

when is someone gonna do a study to counter the 'lost revenue' claims?

ie, ask the downloaders: "Would you have paid money for this?"

Concurred.
I took a music appreciation class the second semester of my freshman year with the sole intent of stealing as much music as possible from others in the class through OurTunes, a Java applet that lets you nab music from others' iTunes. Luckily, the others in the class had good musical taste and I was lucky enough to nab such gems like all four disks of Laurie Anderson's United States Live and every Die Kreuzen record.
But I never ever ever downloaded anything on campus. Even though I'm sure it's done left and right, it's frightening to think about how much a university could blackball someone for farking up.

/goes to the same school as Sam Rassenfoss (NSFW) did, so we all know full well not to fark around with downloading, even if it's just music
//bored in class? check out ourtunes.

You know what's silly? My university bans nearly every port known to man except 21 for ftp, and a couple others.

I can't torrent or play games on yahoo (Ugh!!) but I can download from gnutella just peachy. It's funny.
