I've got this old record of a live performance by Sam Cooke somewhere in Harlem. It's farking amazing, and that's the only way to describe it. farking amazing.

Mofo, I've got that too. Makes me feel like I'm there too. Favorite on there is "Nothing can change this love." Awesome crowd, great performance.

He's the man who invented soul. If there are angels they no doubt dance to his music to this day.

I love Sam Cooke... and it's my birthday, too

Bob Dylan is still alive.

Helluo

I've got one of those USB turntables to I have a digital copy already, thanks. I know what you mean about the crowd, it's like magic. I like to spark a bowl, put that album on, and by the time I'm listening to "Bring It On Home To Me" I can almost imagine myself in that club, long ago, not so far away, with the pretty girls and well dressed guys, swaying and sweating and singing the callback along with the crowd: yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah).

Fantastic.

Dont know much about dance theory.
Dont know much about theology.
Dont know much about the holy book.
Dont know much about winged folk.

I prefer the mix on the original cd (the one on the record) to the one on the reissue of the cd.

It's all great, though.

Cupid is one of may favourite songs. Such a pure and beautiful voice.

SuburbanCowboy: Bob Dylan is still alive.

Lolz.

That statement made me wonder what music would be like if Dylan died in 1964...

SuburbanCowboy: Bob Dylan is still alive.

His voice isn't though. As much as I am a Dylan fan, his voice at concerts I hear are really bad.

omg... Sam Cooke has a great silky smooth voice. Real nice tone/pitch/range. Great singer.

now if only i could remember what song he sung that I heard on the radio.... it might've been a cover or something... but it was real sad and heartwrenching... great song....dammit brain... remember!

He did "Cupid", "Chain Gang", and "Wonderful World", which James Taylor later covered.

No one like him then, no one like him now.
Not only was his music amazing, he was a hell of a business man too. He was able to do what no black artist had ever dreamed of before.

It's "Live at the Harlem Square Club" that was mentioned downthread...and hell yeah it's fantastic.

"Night Beat" is also real good - it's Sam doing a bunch of old blues covers.

Helluo: Favorite on there is "Nothing can change this love."

That right there is a deal-closing tune.

Pontius Gandalf 2008-01-22 07:56:47 PM
I think his finest moment is "A Change Is Gonna Come," but I'm personally partial to "Just For You."

sorry, the 'great' designation gets removed once you brutally did what he did. Or you all have R Kelley blinders on?

The Duke of Carrot Flowers: He may be great, but that was shiat.

Not so much shiat, as quaint. Still a million times better than contemporary "black music".

T.rex: sorry, the 'great' designation gets removed once you brutally did what he did. Or you all have R Kelley blinders on?

Hmmm?
