I think it's cooler that Kraftwerk is playing. Does that make me a bad person?

That's the point of Coachella.

Roger Waters is a genius. Also, a complete farktard.

I heard his DSOTM isn't that great.

You are incorrect. Roger does Pink Floyd a thousand times better than the David Gilmour Pink Floyd Orchestra. Don't get me wrong, Gilmour is a fine guitarist and singer but the "Live Pulse" version of DSOTM is pretty soulless. The notes are kinda' in the right spot but completely devoid of any emotion. Not unlike hearing it on the radio...again.
Roger brought both the sound and the emotion. It sort of mattered again. It caused you to pay attention to it again and listen as if for the first time. They delivered.
The only people who I saw at the shows that weren't enthralled were the few Bushbots who became testy at the anti-Bush lyrics during "Leaving Beirut". Not to mention the anti-Bush graffiti on the pig during "Sheep". That was a perk watching some of them go into a lather. Then when they left I had more elbow room.

/Would still like Pink Floyd to reunite
// Roger and Nick want to do it.
///David doesn't want to relenquish control and Rick hasn't been told by David what he is supposed to feel about the whole thing.

Ilmarinen 2008-01-21 10:51:05 PM
Ok so I haven't followed Pink Floyd post The Wall, but from what I heard Roger's solo stuff is pretty tuneless and boring, while Dave's is kind of empty but still sounds to me somewhat like the Floyd (if you don't pay too much attention). I'm willing to believe a Waters show is better, though.

/PF was truly more than the sum of its parts

Are you kidding? "Money" is their anthem.

destitute college kid 2008-01-22 12:06:59 AM
That's a pretty crappy lineup for Coachella. If you have to put Love and Rockets and Dan farking Deacon that high on your bill, you've got problems. Most of the good bands are the ones who play every festival anyway (Gogol Bordello, My Morning Jacket.)

/still, at least they didn't sink to Madonna again this year

If they got Rage to reunite why not Pink Floyd.

THIS. OMG THIS!

I saw the pulse concert on TV and listened to the disc, I thought exactly what you thought about it. I maybe only listened to it twice.
and then in summer 2007 i saw Roger Waters play it live in my city. It was awesome. [well the whole concert was awesome, but i was particularly impressed with DSOTM]. The new guitarist/singer was great, Roger was actually pretty good singing wise/bass wise, the solos were spot on and with energy and emotion, the only spot where it dragged a bit was "us and them", which i only moderately liked in the first place anyway. The drummer was great too. Very similar synths and guitar tones/textures to the actual album... unlike Pulse which seemed 90's-fied. [ok.. maybe a few tiny 2007 updates here and there to the sound]. The major standouts for me in the DSOTM suite anyway were "Time", "Money", "Any Colour you Like" [extended jam], and "Brain Damage/Eclipse". The rest are very close behind. Mr. Screen and the lightshow [especially the prism at the end] were great too.
I just wish i could remember more of it... i only remember snippets audio/visual.... and the general feeling of F***ing awesomeness!!!!!!
there. that's my rant for the day.
oh, btw, "have a cigar" and "sheep" and "SOYCD" rocked / were wicked too!

Really cool lineup this year! Wish I still lived somewhere close.

Would love to see spiritualized, verve, Portishead, and love & rockets. Also interested in seeing vampire weekend, chromeo, and stars live.

And why would he? Waters spent over a decade trying to dismantle Floyd and take the rights to the name when there were three other people in the band (four if you still wanna count Syd). After he's been laughed out of every court with jurisdiction, now he wants to get back with Floyd?

Ya wanna leave, leave. You insist the band's gotta end because you're not in it... what a tool.

It's all water under the bridge ha ha ha. I don't get all the hate between some bands. It was so long ago and you're all richer than fark who cares if i were them I'd just want to bring joy to millions of people if i had the ability to. But thats just me, everyones free to make up their own mind.

I have absolutely no interest in hearing DSOTM without Gilmour on guitar. Hearing it without Roger Waters on bass, however, does not bother me in the least.

Grrlscout 2008-01-22 01:47:35 AM
I've seen post-Waters Floyd twice and Waters once. They need eachother. Floyd w/o Roger is beautiful elevator music with no edge or lyrics that make you think. Roger without Floyd can be a little screechy.

Final Cut is one of best Floyd albums. The Gunner's Dream is pure greatness.

LOL @ your Floyd description, Musicology101! Don't Dave & Nick own the Floyd name now with Rick being an employee?

Waters-DSOTM Tour 2007 was the best concert I ever attended. Comfortably Numb brought tears of joy to my eyes

barneyfifesbullet 2008-01-22 02:48:33 AM
David Gilmour has said repeatedly doesn't want to do a big Pink Floyd tour, which Roger supposedly wants to do. Kinda ironic.

That's the reason Gilmour did a solo record in 2006 instead of putting the name Pink Floyd on it. Then, he did a small U.S. tour of smaller venues.

They should compromise and just do a few Pink Floyd shows in London in front of cameras so everyone could enjoy it. Better than nothing.

danduran 2008-01-22 03:10:44 AM
Gilmour's recent solo album was pretty farking amazing, and I'm a Waters fan. But Waters doesn't seem to do new rock music anymore, and his last couple of albums sucked.

You know...if they actually had Pink Floyd and wanted fans for every band to get a chance at tickets, wouldn't the best way to assure this to be to say it's just Roger?

For the Division Bell release Rick was brought into the band again as a full member. Sadly, it's mostly for show. Jon Carin is the main keyboardist for both Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. He even sets up Rick's keyboard settings for him. There is a recent Jon Carin interview where he confirms this.

The bottom line is that we are back in 1983 again as far as Pink Floyd members getting along except that Roger and David have switched roles.

FuriousGeorge945 2008-01-22 08:46:17 AM
It's a really disappointing lineup this year, especially the headliners. It seems like they made a real effort to get musicians whose best days are far behind them or who haven't been relevant in at least 3 years. Seriously, Jack Johnson?!?

Cooper420 2008-01-22 10:24:30 AM
Saw both of his shows in Toronto, ACC and his final date at SkyDome in 2007 (now sadly the Rogers Center)

All I can say is I was amazingly impressed, it was so great to see a musical genius and the talent he brought with him (himself and his band)

Just so everyone knows, he's going to be on Saturday Night Live on Feb 2nd. Aparently playing all of DSOM because of thr writers strike! (I'm sure.....)

Here are some pictures I took and sent into a Pink Floyd fan website

Yes... Yes it is. I only noticed the day after while looking through the pics.

As far as "some old guy" "butcher his own music"..... it is so wrong. Roger may not be able to hit certain notes anymore, but man he puts on a spectacular show.

dbenjamin 2008-01-22 01:32:59 PM
David Gilmour needs Roger Waters to write really good music now, but Roger Waters needs David Gilmour to do their older catalog justice in a live setting.

Also, Roger waters can't sing for shiat anymore.

Remember, Waters is the reason those for lads are not still playing together.

and yes, The Floyd is better than the sum of all it's parts.

Uhm, Jon Carin is nobody's biatch. He is far and away one of the premier musicians out there today. He plays with both Waters and the Gilmour Orchestra (I like that Musicology), along with a host of others. Point being, Gilmour needs him to play Floyd even having Rick Wright there ... and he does an outstanding job with Waters all by his lonesome. And, the fact that Rick can't set up his keyboards correctly for a show (and did I mention Jon there to actually play the majority of the music during) ... well, sounds like someone's a figurehead and short a few brain cells.

While I hate music critics with a passion, Joel Vance of Stereo Review once had a great description of Waters' voice: "a cross between Vincent Price and an Anglican priest with a hangover."

I wish Gilmour would just give in and do the tour... I see his reasons not to, but seriously, 25 years ago... cmon.

I would rather see Gilmour live than Waters though thats for sure...

Terrible lineup, I wanted to fly out there for it the past few years, and now that I finally am free to do so, the lineup sucks. Any that I really want to see tour and are better in smaller clubs (seriously, WHY Spank Rock at a festival?)

Sometimes, it's just better to let sleeping dogs lie. While I prefer Gilmour's Floyd more than I like Waters' solo stuff, I think it might be better at this point not to just reunite for the hell of it, especially if there's still bad feelings.

That way leads to the "they're arguing with each other on stage Police reunion tour".

You must have missed the part where it's kind of irrelevant that Carin sets up Wright's keyboards. It's really no great feat to punch buttons and call up presets. I'm sure Carin gets paid to do this simple bit of tech work that Wright is tired of doing himself after 40 years in the industry. It's like being surprised that Gilmour doesn't tune all his guitars himself before each show.
