I'm hoping they come to New York. They are rumored to be playing Coachella.

Travis McGee 2008-01-21 03:37:39 PM
So... they finally burned through all the money they made off the first two albums?

After that execrable live CD (clapping along to the songs?!), I'm hoping this new album is good. And Beth's solo CD back in 2002 was rubbish. There, I said it.

Can't wait.

I didn't really like her solo album either, but the live CD/DVD was amazing.

My only concern is that so many years after the last record that they may end up sounding dated. I still listen to the records, and it's not just for nostalgia, it's because it's aural sex. For what it's worth, Beth's album with Rustin Mann shouldn't be considered as part of the Portishead oeuvre.

Nice large HOLE in their tour schedule near the end of April...I'd say they're a lock.

I've been going to Coachella since it started in '99 and I've been begging Goldenvoice to get 'em the entire time...

Yay for Portishead!

Now all we need is for:
1. Pixies to make a new album
2. My Bloody Valentine to reunite/make new album
3. Massive Attack (original members) to get it together
4. Some other random group to reunite
5. Obscure singer to come out of retirement

And I'll be happy

you know this is happening, right...?

Don't know about Massive Attack, but I do know a new album is due... well, sometime this year... maybe?

You know, I was just on a long roadtrip listening to the first two PH albums thinking, "Man, it's been like 12 years since they did anything useful. Where's their new material?".

And lo, Fark doth bringeth me these good tidings. Echoing similar thoughts, I hope this record is as sexily depressing as their last record.

//Just by referring to them as records, you know to stay off my lawn//

NME says they're doing this (new window).

That is so incredibly awesome! I discovered them a few years ago (yeah, I'm always late to the game) and totally fell in love. It feels like I've been waiting for new material (Beth's solo co-project doesn't count. It sucked.) for eons, and I've almost given up hope. This announcement makes me so happy.

Necrosis 2008-01-21 05:11:38 PM
Their albums were awesome (and I liked the live one too). I have some very low quality mp3s of the new songs that have been played live, but I'd need to listen again to get any idea of what to expect, I kinda forgot I had them. I hope they have something new and interesting and not just a Smashing Pumpkins style return, but we'll see.

While the Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man album was nothing like Portishead, I enjoyed it. Very mellow with some cool sounds. I saw them live on that tour and it was pretty awesome to see some of those songs performed with eight or nine people and guitars, upright bass, drums, mandolins, and all kinds of stuff going on.

/Alexi Murdoch opened for that show before he got big on all those soundtracks

I'll believe there's a new album when I have the disc in hand - I've read too many articles like this every 'effin year since '98.

"New Portishead album in 1999 - erm, 2000, no!! 2001 this time, we sear!! LOLCOPER, JK, 2002, realllllly... "

They've already performed new material at ATP. And they're touring...which usually means a new product to support.

If it doesn't sound like an updated Dummy, they should take their toys and go home.

oh thank god. I've been hoping for a new album from them for years. Beth Gibbons has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard, she is one of the most emotionally powerful singers out there. Portishead's music is so sorrowful and depressing, but there is just so much beauty in it that it always makes me feel better when I listen to it.

Archie Godwin: kick ass. time to baggie up grams of hydro at 75 dollars a gram.

Only a moron would pay that much. Even in the sticks it's only 20 per.

I was happy about this, but then I heard the samples of their new material. Unless it sounds drastically different when recorded, I want nothing to do with new Portishead.

For my dreamy female vocalist fix, I'll stick with Mazzy Star, thank you.

There's about 2 years worth of posts on their myspace from their drunken guitarist that detail the recording and production process. He's also dislexic and many of the posts were near incoherent -- pretty funny.

Any way it's real, now the question is, will it be any good? Basically they going to have to write really good songs and not just rely on their 'sound' to carry them since their 'sound' is now public domain.

I saw Portishead in Austin in 1998. Wow. She really sounds like that live. I also dropped many a panty to their music so yes, it works, fellas... but only if you're hot.
