Everyone knows that Yakutsk is only useful as a gateway to Irkutsk and Kamchatka, and thence into North America. Because, really, nobody ever manages to hold Asia for long.

The only reason why I know where Yakutsk is, is because it's one of the last countries you take over in a game of Risk.

I think you need an orangutan.

Great description of the cold. If the writer had stuck around their tolerance would have quickly gone up to an hour or so. It's pretty amazing.

FTFA: Anton Chekhov, on his journey through Siberia in 1890, painted a grim picture of the life of the prisoners held there. "They have lost whatever warmth they once had," wrote Chekhov about a group of men he encountered in Western Siberia. "The only things that remain in life for them [are] vodka, sluts, more sluts, more vodka... They are no longer human beings but wild beasts."

I thought this was supposed to be a bad place?

embrodak_luvs_strongbad 2008-01-20 10:23:38 PM

oh, and I must add...

TFA: Almost without exception, the women wear fur from head to toe, much of it locally produced. In such a climate, ethics count for little. "I saw on the television that in Europe you have these lunatics who say it's not nice to wear fur because they love animals," says Natasha, a Yakutsk resident, who's sporting a coat made of rabbit and a fetching hat of arctic fox, with a fox tail hanging from each side and tied in a knot at the end to look like plaits. "They should come and live in Siberia for a couple of months and then see if they are still so worried about the animals. You need to wear fur here to survive. Nothing else keeps you warm."

As an animal rights advocate who is usually disgusted by those who wear skin and hair OTHER than their OWN,
I think it's a fair exception in places like this.
I mean, it IS being produced locally, and it's not like they're wearing fur as some snobbish fashion statement.

It's those rich biatches who flaunt their $20K coats of baby mink and whatnot...only because they feel entitled to wear the most outrageously-priced, high-fashion scraps of tortured animal hide, completely disregarding the means by which that shiat was produced...
they don't NEED it--hell, they have a whole closet full of them, most usually get worn once or twice before another is added to the collection. THOSE are the people who piss me off.
