Reminds me of a LP I checked out of the public library back in the late 1970's, all duets with Bing Crosby/Louis Armstrong. Have yet to see a CD version of that album. Would buy it in a second if it became available!

I was 13 or 14 at the time, didn't have good equipment, recorded it on a portable cassette recorder onto an "Alcorn" brand cassette (they came in a 3-pack from T.G. & Y for $1 back then) with a microphone held next to a speaker...

Look up how Danny Kaye got out of serving in WW II, and you won't be such a fan.

Well, as far as I know he was never prosecuted....Despite an FBI investigation.

/grandpa beat you to it.

Boy I wish talent like that is what's mainstream today, instead of these created-by-industry-in-and-out-of-rehab hacks.

According to a series of memos released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the Freedom of Information Act, the FBI investigated a rumor that Kaye dodged the draft during World War II. Allegedly, Kaye faked a medical condition in order to gain 4-F status and exemption from military service. However, these accusations were never proven, and though the FBI maintained a file on Kaye's connections to supposed Communist groups, he was never prosecuted. Link (new window)

So he was 4-F and accused of lying, but it was never proven. What's the problem?

The best part about Louie Armstrong singing is that his facial expressions never change. And he is STILL better then 99% of today's artists.

I suppose it would make you feel better if he had served and died in a hole in the Jungle somewhere in the Pacific than to have brought joy to countless millions through his performances?

As your citation noted, he was also accused of being a Communist. Communists were the boogie men of the 40's & 50's, much as al qaeda is today. Practically every entertainer from that era was accused as such. I would guess that the Communist accusations fueled the other investigations.

Way to drive this discussion to Debbie Downerville.

Great find subby.

Hawkins: I've got it! I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the
palace has the brew that is true! Right?

Griselda: Right. But there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace!

Hawkins: They broke the chalice from the palace?

Griselda: And replaced it with a flagon.

Hawkins: A flagon...?

Griselda: With the figure of a dragon.

Hawkins: Flagon with a dragon.

Griselda: Right.

Hawkins: But did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle?

Griselda: No!!! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon! The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!

Hawkins: The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.

Griselda: Just remember that.

Forgot about that one... Tough song, doubt many people today could do that.

The character of the artist is not necessarily relevant to the quality of the art. I don't want to be his friend, I want to see him perform.

I clicked the link thinking Louie Anderson at first and was very very confused...

How about the millions upon millions of dollars he donated and raised for countless charities? Yeah, What a douchebag Mr. Kaye was.

You forgot to mention that supposedly he also had a 10 year affair with Sir Lawrence Olivier.....

Awesome find subby!

If only talent like this was around today.

It's hard to listen to Loius and not end up smiling.

PetrosZ 2008-01-22 02:43:07 AM
The army comment is totally irrelevant with art. I understand not liking the guy, but talent is talent. Maybe he was gay, took drugs or a communist. Oh and Louis was black...

Other than that, it's an awesome performance. Specially comparing with the garbage that floats around these days.

Late comment, but had to say thanks for posting this. And Buggy - thanks for posting the song!
