Thanks phlemography for identifying yourself as a non-musician.

No crime there of course.
I am a non asshat.

That guy is grooving.
He is tight and so in the pocket.
Low down and mellow but slinky as hell.
That is how REAL funk/groove is played. Subtle and with restraint.

Mom's basement dwelling Dream Theater tards will no doubt fail to understand such talk of "groove" and "pocket" and so forth.

I guess neither do classically trained violinists either so as I said before,no crime there.

Bernard "Pretty" Purdie...that cat has worked with everybody.

Brahms can get pretty greasy I suppose.

side note: actual beat begins half way thru the clip.
Funkiest soul beat EVAR? hmmmm... it was low down, mellow, and minimalist.
i'm not sure what a "soul beat" is, though...
I know what a funk beat is... and here is one that i think might be worthy...

I hate the lyrics/vocal delivery and the cheesy 70's synth, but i love the bass and the drums/beat.

I knew it. It's the "Babylon Sisters"-groove; all pocket and grace. I'd do some evil shiat to play with the guy, is all I'll say.

Bernard Purdie is killer, but the audio is pretty crappy on that clip. And IMHO, I'm gonna go with Clyde Stubblefield and "The Funky Drummer" as the "funkiest soul beat EVAR"...

sorry..no html skills, but this goes to the groove....

Taken fron the Anvil Cases Booth at the Winter 2008 NAMM in Anaheim, California.

From Wiki:

Purdie is considered an influential and innovative exponent of funk and is also noted for a "rolling" shuffle beat he calls "the Purdie shuffle". Two examples of "the Purdie shuffle" can be heard on Steely Dan's "Home at Last" and "Babylon Sisters". He is credited with being one of the inventors of the "Acid Jazz" genre in music. According to Drummerworld.com, "colleagues describe the drummer's style as the 'funkiest soul beat' in the business".

just in case you wondering who he is.....

El Freak [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 06:24:27 PM
Bernard Purdie is a hell of a drummer. Too bad he nearly ruined his reputation by claiming he played on all the Beatles records.

Yup. The cornerstone of ALL hiphop beats. It's like the litmus test\battle break for MCs. At block parties back in Brooklyn if you threw it on you had a line of MCs lined up like hobos at a soup kitchen!

craigdamage Thanks phlemography for identifying yourself as a non-musician.

Hmm, as someone with absolute pitch who's played half-a-dozen instruments fluently for 3+ decades, I can't say I agree with you.

I didn't diss the guy. I didn't say he wasn't talented.

All I said was "yawn" -- because that's what my reaction was to that clip. I see 12-year-olds at my local music store playing like this. It's nothing special, at least not in this day and age.

craigdamage I am a non asshat.

Thanks craigdamage for identifying yourself as a liar.

craigdamage 2008-01-20 07:20:21 PM
All you said was "yawn" and somehow it makes you and your "perfect pitch" NOT a f*cking troll?

If you aren't "dissing" the guy I recommend you learn to express yourself better. A little less troll-like would be nice.

Interesting how your original one syllable comment has now become a full on face saving rebuttal.

I too am impressed with 12 year olds who have done their homework and learn from the old timers.

Too bad in your three decades of musical experience you never learned simple and respectful manners.

Unlike you who sees "nothing special" I am respectful.
I hope those kids at your local music store are too.

YAWN

I have been farking since 2003.

Big deal of course.

I have since learned this:

When someone says "yawn" on a comments thread that is a TROLL.

That is the very definition of fark asshattery.

Your trolling was successful I suppose as it did indeed illicit a hostile response from me.

I called you out as an asshat and then you attempted to save face with your far more detailed explanation of your original post.

Who failed?

Next time you leave an asinine monosyllabic comment you better make sure you have a thicker skin.

None of my comments are derived from "hate" as would an infantile mind assume.

Welcome to fark.

When FARKERS rave about Peart , etc. I always throw out two names;
the aforementioned Purdie and Al Jackson of Booker T fame.
honorable mention; Jim Gordon

In the DVD about the making of Steely Dan's Aja, Purdie is farking hilarious. He talks about using the Purdie Shuffle in "Home At Last." Fagan tells the story of Bernie doing sessions in the 60s where he'd set up two signs on either side of his kit:
You Done It
You Done Hired the Hitmaker

"funky drummer" by James Brown is maybe the most sampled beat ever.

What kills me about Bernard Purdie is that he makes it look so effortless.

If it were only so.

ThePuceGuardian 2008-01-21 02:00:04 AM
That's good, sure, but all other beats pale in comparison to this.

Ditto that on all accounts

while this may have been progressive thirty years ago, todays percussionists have evolved. i agree that this performance isn't particularly astounding. High school musicians can easily reproduce these kinds of beats now days.

Damn that must be some high school. Is it a performing arts program school, or do they have a championship marching band?

I doubt any teenage kid could duplicate the relaxed but super tight feel of the Purdie Shuffle, the sweet spot where a blues shuffle meets 12/8 time. Much harder than it looks, trust me.

Drum machines sadly killed the use of triplets in drumming.

yawntastic. this sounds like Steely Dan- protracted, predictable and boooooring.

Hehe say what you will about Steely Dan (I'll think you a fool, but it's your right), but predictable?

Not even the haters think that

drumsac 2008-01-21 05:37:20 PM
I approve of this thread. It makes me want to practice my shuffles.

BTW, another great example of this groove can be found on Led Zep's "Fool in the Rain." Bonham loved Purdie.

Did anybody else hear the amazingly fast double-kick going on while our hero played his pocket beat!? He was counting his beats on the kick..."where am I going now...16th....32nd....64th.. and then the video cut off. That guy is very fast and very smooth.
