I loves me some haggis, neeps and tatties.

And lets not forget the whisky.

Because if there is any Scottish product in high demand in the U.S., it's Haggis. Paying for Haggis on the black market has made me destitute.

I have a gut feeling this thread is going to go downhill from here.

McDonalds burgers are legal, why not haggis?

Glasgowsfinest [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 12:42:30 PM
odubhain: McDonalds burgers are legal, why not haggis?

Yeah, people eat sausages inna bun too, at least the makers of haggis are honest about what goes into it.

"The market is massive because there are so many expat Scots there and once Americans try a good quality haggis, they can't get enough of it,"

First: most of the expat Scots moved here to get away from haggis. And to be further away from the Welsh.

Second: there is no such thing as "good quality haggis,' and Americans wouldn't try it even if there were.

Caradoc [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 12:48:35 PM
I happen to like haggis.

De gustibus disputandum non est, an' a' o' that...

Yes, there is.

And just because you wouldn't try it, doesn't mean other people aren't adventurous.

I was surprised by it - it tastes nice.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

the Canadian-made one wins awards:

Somebody killed this haggis. I will nay give up until they're in the nick and I know why they did it.

Gosub 2008-01-20 02:10:28 PM
So, in the article's picture, what's in the beeker to the left of the haggis? Is that the neeps or the tatties?

They may offer an offal free haggis but there is no such thing as an haggis that is awful free.

gregoire4 2008-01-20 02:18:16 PM
I like to eat haggis, but only on S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT!

Hypersapien 2008-01-20 02:18:22 PM
And they think people in the US would buy it even if it wasn't banned, do they?

limeyfellow 2008-01-20 02:18:28 PM
I could see it selling really well in the mountains of NC around here. They seem obsessed into thinking they are actually Scottish and do every stereotypically bad thing they can think off to proof it. It's almost as bad as people in Boston who think they are Irish.

BillArr 2008-01-20 02:19:15 PM
First...I have eaten haggis....it is delicious, people just say they don't like it because they can't mentally get over what is in it.

Second....US not ban something...what a joke!!! The FDA requires that everything we eat be processed and have all of the flavor and nutrients pauteurized out of it.

Any Scottish supplier will have to show some guts and have lots of heart to save their bacon.

Flibbert 2008-01-20 02:20:47 PM
Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

It's too bad the US Department of Agriculture (or maybe the CDC...) never
prevented my Mom from making these Polish "delicacies" for my Dad;

Flazcki AKA "gross me the fark out" = tripe

PockleCod 2008-01-20 02:23:29 PM
I can tell you, not-Scottish though I am, I would probably eat Haggis once a week if it were readily available at my grocery store.

Really good stuff.

blacksho89 2008-01-20 02:25:26 PM
So apparently a neep is a turnip and a tattie is a scone made of mashed potatoes and flour.
As if that makes it any better.

Raspil 2008-01-20 02:25:35 PM
It usually contains ingredients such as sheeps lungs, liver and heart minced with onion.

It is boiled in the animal's stomach.

hold the onion.

SpeckledJim 2008-01-20 02:26:33 PM
Good job I don't have 4 of these in the cupboard waiting for a rainy/hungry day

Knowing US customs, this is probably a worse crime than being caught with drugs.

Neeps = Turnips = Swede (UK)
Tatties = Potatoes

Typically mashed.

How else could you coax the wee beesties out of their burrows?

ssdNOLA75 2008-01-20 02:28:06 PM
blacksho, neeps are turnips, and tatties are potatoes.

also. Louisiana boy living in Scotland for the time being. So I kinda like boudin and haggis. Just about every culture has its way to eat the less desired bits left over from a dead animal.

"Haggis? What is haggis?"

"Sheep's stomach, stuffed with meat and barley!"

"And what do you do with it?"

"You EAT it!"

"How revolting."
